Breakfast Topic: Character slots

Some players with less severe altitis may not know it, but there are limits on how many characters you can have: ten per server, 50 per account. Ten is a good number for the per-server limit, at least right now; you get one of each class, plus one more for a bank/AH alt. But what are we supposed to do if we want to make a Death Knight? Delete one of our beloved alts? Pay to transfer a character? Start the DK on a different server (if that's even possible)? CM Nethaera tells us there are no plans to add more character slots, although she notes that people are unhappy with it and that she'll relay that to the devs. Are you going to run up against the character limit in WotLK?

I'm a major altoholic, however, I got a second account and I have my six seventies split 3 per account, with two teams of lowbie dualboxed toons on their way to 70.
Dualboxed deathknights. It's gonna be fun. >:)

Oh and... why not just let us PAY for character slots? City of Heroes does it. They could make big moneys letting us have more slots.

Think about the people who share their accounts with others...
Those are the ones who'll get in trouble if you ask me.
Besides that, I'm not that much of an alt man, I won't have any troubles.

I may be wrong (I haven,t read so much about the DK and didn't attend BlizzCon) but isn't the Death Knight what your characters becomes? If so, you'd have no problem at all... One of your alts (or your main) would actually become it, therefore swapping place with the "ancient" toon on your character list.

If you have that many characters it is time to liquidate some of that baggage. On my main's server I have (of course) my main, 2 alts and one bank/AH mule. But maybe that is just me. I do not see the point of having that many toons IMO.

I don't have this problem, myself. Thankfully. heh.

In the short term: delete my bank alt. In the longer term, I'm concerned I won't be able to play more hero classes without more character slots. At the moment, I have all nine classes at 61+, I like them all, and I have no plans to move to another server without the community and contacts I've built up.
If nothing else, I'd at least like to buy more character slots per server for hero classes...

I don't see it as a problem as I only have 4 chars I play at any given time:
70 Rogue main
20something Hunter alt
29 Twink* Hunter
29 Twink* Pally
*Twinking was more of a phase, havent "twinked" in a very long time.
I have other chars filling spots like a lvl 10 priest or a 13 warlock but mean nothing to me. I have noticed, the more chars a player has the longer it takes them, if they even get there, to reach 70. Moral of this story: LVL 1-2 chars max, unless you never go outside :P.

Absolutely. I'm an alt-aholic to the extreme. In a given hour i'm probably playing 2-3 characters.
Sylythn Aug 9th 2007 10:37AM
Even at my biggest alt-a-holic moments, I just plain can't PLAY that many characters. Don't you find that you can't keep up with that many, or do you not mind letting some of them sit for weeks at a time? Maybe that's ok for some - I just don't like letting my characters sit in favor of others. I've got my main, my alt, and a couple "fun" characters that I play when I don't want to be bothered by guild stuff and just run around the lowbie zones. For me, at least, one more slot won't be an issue...and yeah, I'm definitely adding a DK to the list.

This is not really a problem. Having 50 character slots is too much imo. 10 is enough per server. Imagine having 50 characters at lvl 70. It's too much !
I started playing WoW about 3 months ago. So far I have a 63 gnome mage, 20 draenei shaman, 11 draenei hunter, 34 nelf warrior, 18 ud rogue and 16 tauren druid. My mage is my main. And having all of these chars is a lot imo, cause I will never get to get .........hmm....let's say 3 of them to 70.
Even for those who are playing who since it started. Having 50 characters at level 70 is too much. They should get out more.

I just can't imagine why anyone would need 10+ characters, much less on a single server. Also, if you're that spread out, how likely is it you'll be up to 80 and running the Death Knight quest anyway? Is it really so much to ask that you maybe drop one of those alts for the Death Knight, if you really want to play it?
The current system is SO much more reasonable than previous MMO character caps. This isn't at all unreasonable.
Zodwow Aug 9th 2007 11:30AM
Yes, a definite concern. I am presently playing five 70s on one server and am working on leveling the off classes. What am I to do when its time to roll my Deathnight?
Rynoa Aug 9th 2007 11:11AM
When I first heard about the new Death Knight class, the character slot issue was the first thing that came to mind. I'm an altaholic to the max-- I have one Alliance of every class except for a warrior, one Horde character, and a bank. All of these characters are in the mid-level range and I would hate to delete them, but I don't really want to pay for the character transfer/risk having problems with the transfer, either.
I think that with the coming expansion, Blizzard should at least offer free character transfers if they're not going to expand the character slots. I would much rather risk the character transfer issues if it was free. :)
Mcdie Aug 9th 2007 1:24PM
I'm already starting to think about which character I could delete to start me death knight and I am not happy about deleting any of them.
Tridus Aug 9th 2007 10:25AM
Have to delete my bank I guess. :(
Kryptonls Aug 9th 2007 9:47AM
10 is more than enough per realm - I mean unless you have absolutely no life :P
But even then, the amount of time people put into an alt they want to level (but never do) - means most people should be happy deleting side projects they wished they'd worked more on.
FireStar Aug 9th 2007 9:54AM
I only play 2 hours a night. But, add that up for 2 years and you have serious altage if you know what you're doing. Either way, I only have 1 char per class so it shouldn't be an issue.
Dave Aug 9th 2007 9:57AM
maybe your "bank alt" is gonna have to be one of your regular alts.
Really though as long as you don't have 10 70's on a single server you shouldn't be TOO upset about losing one if you have to. Especially if you're deleting it to get a high level death knight.
Ealaniel Nov 12th 2008 2:43PM
I have 8 lvl 70 and a lvl 19 twink and a lvl 29 twink - totals 10 slots used. And to the people saying that deleting a less than lvl 70 char shouldnt be an issue to be upset about, you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. My lvl 19 twink has more days played than some of my lvl 70 chars, so deleting any of them is not gonna happen. I think that it's a low and crappy way of earning more money for a company like blizzard that already makes more money than the BNP of a small country to force people to transfer their spare chars to another server just to make room for a new class - really, how hard can it be to add support for an extra char pr server?
