Critapalooza

We've all heard them, those people in Alterac Valley or in Steam Vaults that announce those amazing crits every time one pops up on the screen. You may very well be one of those people yourself. But every time one of those huge numbers pops up in the chat log, you could very well stop and wonder, are they telling the truth?
Nicholas over at WoW LJ posted on this topic today, and I identified with his side of things. He mentioned that whenever someone announces "omg my shadowbolt just crit for 5k!" there is a pause that happens, followed by self-doubt. I know I have been there myself. I sit there and seethe, wondering if I will ever be able to reach those kinds of numbers myself one day. He also brings up the possibility that not everyone is honest when they post these outlandish numbers. Maybe the hunter's Arcane Shot really didn't crit for 4k. Maybe it's a whole huge cover up, where we are all sitting here envious of numbers that don't actually exist.
I'm not really sure either way. I know I'm not a huge crit machine (yet), and I don't post fabulously high numbers mostly because I don't achieve them. If I do, it's something I tell my friends, and we rejoice together in my outrageous luck. Without judgement, I'd like to ask the same question Nicholas does at the end of his post:
also, (nobody will judge you for telling the truth), have you ever done this and lied about the damage you did? (maybe add an extra 100 or 5?)

Thank God I don't bother with DPS classes, every big crit I get I can treasure without having to ogle the e-peen of some 24/7 player and his quasi-invented crit stories.
3k Pally crits FTW!
(note 2.7k from simultaneous reckoning, SoC procs)

Nope, never lied about it.
I also use "Top ScoreFu" which stores personal records for best normal/crit attacks. You can just click on an attack or spell and it automatically puts it into an open chat window, or just does a "say" if there is no chatwindow open.
Nice for when someone asks you what your highest crit was etc.

No need, I find critastic very useful as a crazy critter... keeps the tank aware I just pulled aggro... check it out http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/3898/

On my lvl 39 twink (Fire mage), I do brag about some of my Pyro crits, but I always say the exact amount of damage I do (hello people... the Combat Log tells all, you can't lie when you're standing right next to someone).
I don't really think its bragging, I'm a twink, and doing insane damage is what I do. (+302 Fire Damage FTW!)

I always find it interesting when someone makes a big crit, but for me, my total DPS is more important. I'm an instancing Elemental shaman, and I tend to favor +crit over +dmg, so I get lots and lots of decent-sized crits, but nothing fantastic.

The mod Recount is better than those that lie about their damage, and I'm sure a few other damage meter mods keep accurate track of someone's biggest hits/crits with their abilities during a run. It's also actually useful for seeing how much of a person's damage (or healing) comes from particular abilities. If you get blown away by someone in similar gear of your class you can look at their skill use compared to your own.

Pft... 5k?
My current PvE shadowbolt crit record against a mob without any innate vulnerability is 8865 (for the record, it was on Fathom Guard Sharkkis, one of Karathress's adds) = just to get the e-junk waving out of the way.
To the substantive part - I suppose if people don't believe me, I can always link them to the WWS combat log parse I do for every raid I am a part of. Lossendil's log parser has really revolutionized the way I keep tabs on the people in my raids, and has been extremely helpful in stepping up overall raid performance. It offers functionalities far beyond any of the add-on based damage meters, as well as the ability to create and host a site for all of your guilds logs.

Yep, 5k is a normal crit with Ruin and a FSW/Spellstrike Lock...
7.5k+, and we are talking.

I fairly recently went from arms spec warrior to protection spec and may I just say, I now hate you all... :)
I've stopped looking at my crits - I think I'll go level up my mage...

Just round it up. It's fine. People care even less if you crit for 4564 than if you critted for 4.6k.
Also if you say it vocally down a chat programme people forget what number came first.

Running my mage tonight in kara I got a 7200 pyro on some trash (+40% dot after thanks to ignite, so right at 10k total). I was at 1147 +fire dmg and 34% crit and popped AP. I'm not bragging, just saying these crits are extremely feasible given the right circumstances. I'd also like to add there were no vulns/scorches/coe up on the target at the time.
5k shadowbolts aren't too hard to come by at all. If there's a shadow priest in the group it makes it even easier. Toss in a warlock who is spec'd properly and uses CoS and 5k isn't anything special anymore.
I wonder what crits we'll see in the next expansion... 20k? 30k? Why not? Pre-BC a really kickass crit for me was like 2k. I've gone 5x that now.
bwest0526 Aug 15th 2007 4:25AM
@11 so what your saying..."Pre-BC a really kickass crit for me was like 2k. I've gone 5x that now." is that you are Critting for 10K?? WOW! Impressive...
Seriously people actully keep track of this crap, and who does the most damage and all these add ons to see "who's better" seriously sucking the fun out of the game IMO. As long as the MoB goes down who cares?! Silliness once again. It's like saying back in grade school "my dad can beat up your dad!" or now as an adult male "my p**ns is bigger than yours!"
Fricking give it up already, somewhere down the line you will learn it really isn't important as long as #1. Nobody dies, and #2. The MoB is killed.

I don't so much brag about crits as much as just share them with my guildies for the humour of it. And as an MS warr, I do get my share of decent melee crits. I've got a screenshot of my combat log following a 2v2 Arena match where I executed a rogue for 11k and some change. My partner and I were laughing pretty hard for a good 2 minutes over vent, agreeing that when execute does that much damage, guys should just be cut in two.
awender Aug 15th 2007 4:57AM
I'm sorry, but I had an Arcan Power+trinket instant Pyro crit for 11804. I achieved that in a raid and my mates saw that on their damage meters as well. It was against a high level, not fire vulnerable elite mob.
For fire vulnerable mobs my highest crit was over 25k in Blackwing Lair on level 60.
However, my average crits on level 70 are around 4-6k. I never try to crit a rat.

This article is an example of what WowInsider has become recently. Mind numbingly irrelevant posts. I'm not trying to be a jerk here - just stating that I think the trains been derailed somewhat and needs to get back on track.
Ever since I read that a L42 (if I recall correctly) is writing about WoW..
What does a L42 player know about WoW?
Anyways.
And to answer the question - I'm sure some people round up or down - but the difference is your target. Criting for 4000 on cloth isn't the same as doing it on plate.
Woz Aug 15th 2007 5:08AM
@13 - Why is it that warriors like to tell people about their execute crits. 11k my ass! Executes are not based on weapons, attack power or any stats. All it does is convert Rage to Damage. lvl 70 Execute will give you a normal attack of 925+[21*(R-15)] so with 100 rage this equals 2710. It can crit for 5420 but never more then that, and that is on a 0 armor enemy! I think it is people like you that are the subject of this post
Beaverius Aug 15th 2007 6:11AM
I crit for..
OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!

remember: this. is. a. blog.
there is ALWAYS something to discover about the game and it is very likely that a lvl 42 may have discovered something you didn't know. So why all the hate about someone who's mid-level?
The arrogance of that comment is just astounding.
It's attitudes like THAT which are causing most of the problems people tend to experience here or the game.
