Oh, World of Warcraft, I could never quit you
Over at Casual WoW, Delaney has compiled a detailed list of the various options players are given when attempting to cancel their subscription. Yes, before you can cancel your account, you're required to select a reason from this Blizzard-provided list. (Just above the pulldown menu offering you a list of reasons you see the graphic and text above, including the sad news that, by quitting, you're making this poor peon cry.) Some of the more interesting options include:
- Content / Unexpected Genre
- Harassment / Conflict with player/guild
- Other Game / Ultima Online
- Technical / No Computer
- Other / Offline play not available

I would be burn out would be the number one reason. People might complain about balance, content, etc, etc but this game must have done something right because no other mmo has come close to their subscription numbers so millions of people new to MMOs signed up.

I had to cancel recently (my time just expired today! sniff). My reasons? School starts monday, and I'm running very short on money. They'd better be putting out patch 2.2 soon so that the Mac video capture feature will make it worth it for me to subscribe again, because when you're taking 18 hours, it's not worth it to be putting 15 bucks a month into such a timesink of a game. However, once I can get game footage, it'll make editing class that much easier - I don't have to round up a bunch of people and a camera and lights just to get something recorded.
Still, I miss it already. And the sad crying orc didn't make it any easier. Don't cry, Mr. Orc. I still wuv yoo!

I agree, it'd be very interesting to see these numbers.
But it will never happen. Releasing these would tell the competition exactly where the disgruntled players are, and allow them to target advertising better.

I pay subscriptions for friends that are too lazy to go and buy a game card, and every month I renew then cancel. Every month I put that its too expensive in hopes that maybe they'll lower the price :)

Haha, some things on that list are hilarious.
"The Horde is not developed enough."

I'm guessing they add common complaints as they happen, some of these are pretty current/timely. I'm just surprised that they don't respond to the "I am canceling because you nerfed X" posts on the forums with "no, actually, that's a choice on the poll and nobody picked it". :)

I see that screen once a month. I prefer not to have it auto-renew (just in case I don't have the money in my bank account) so as soon as I pay, I immediately cancel my subscription. Works great for me.
In fact, one of the reasons listed for canceling is "lack of pay-as-you-go plan".
I tried using the prepaid cards once. One problem is that I can never find them for just one month's worth of time. Another is that I have to go to the store, track down the item (which comes in a big box) try to hide it from everyone as I make my way to the checkout counter, then face the accusing eyes of the meatbag at the register when I show him the proof that I'm a geek. Sigh.

They have things that are almost 3 years old, like the WotF nerf, but hey DON'T have things like "LOLwell sucks and priest healing talents are 2 trees worth of garbage".
Cause I'd have picked that if I could have.

Chyeah, that's a commonly used reason.
