AddOn creation site needs your help
WoWAce is a set of libraries heavily used by developers to create many of those nifty AddOns we know and love like FuBar and Grid. Unfortunately, their Wiki site lost its data and the latest usable back up is over two months old. Everything since then has been lost.In an effort to reconstruct the lost pages, they have pulled HTML copies of those pages from Google Cache and now they need your assistance. You can go to their Rebuilding page and help them convert the HTML into Wiki format and repost it on the site.
If you have some spare time, head on over and help them get back on their feet so they can continue to help developers create those AddOns we can't live without.

Kind of makes you question the competence of these developers if their latest usable backup is 2 months old. Why are they asking us to do their dirty work for them?
For that matter, why is WOW Insider trying to recruit us to do their dirty work for them?

I guess you already checked this out:

@JayTee
Agreed fully. With a site that popular for so many people, one would think that they would do monthly, bi-monthly, or even weekly backups. Why they haven't done that since May is beyond my comprehension.

quess what 1 & 3 sometimes backup plans fail. The Ace community has given a TON to the wow community and if you can help them out it would be nice. If you cant why troll a thread?
Areis Aug 17th 2007 4:41PM
@1 & 3 - I totally agree! With all the money they make from writing all those mods, they should be able to afford servers, backup kit, time and staff to run their IT for them. Oh, wait.....
Ghen Aug 17th 2007 4:44PM
I applaud wowinsider. wowace and the Ace plugins revolutionized modding to the point where probably 3/4 of my installed mods are aced. (about 60 total). Anything the community can do to help out the site would be a lovely thank you for mods like Cartographer, Big Wigs, Fubar, and others.

As a systems administrator, it is simply unheard of to not have a regular backup schedule and test said backups at least once a month or so. We are not trolling, but simply pointing out that they are not following the standard operating procedures of any competent IT staff.

The other thing that the trolls seem to be ignorant of is the facts. Shocking, I know. The facts are that the only content that was lost was wiki content. The SVN database, the trac database, and all of the hard work people put into the actual addons was fully protected.
There was however an issue with the wiki content, and the wiki content alone. So yeah, some documentation was lost, and they have found a roundabout way to retrieve it and are asking for some help from the community that they give their time and effort to. OH, the shame! How dare they!
So.. I suggest you go take your big troll hooves and go pound sand.

Didnt this happen like two months ago? old news?
Vhailior Aug 17th 2007 6:32PM
indeed, These guys don't get any money from us, apart from voluntary donations.
Doing a little bit of work to help them recover is the very least we can do.
There's no need to be callous and rude in pointing out errors when the effort could be done to help rebuild.
Tekkub Aug 17th 2007 6:40PM
@1 - The community does not run the server that their stuff is hosted on, just a few people from said community. Ace's SVN/Wiki/Forums are quite... massive. Backups say nothing about the people who use the site, just the ones that run it.
As for the situation with the backup, no idea what Kaelten's excuse is :)

Stupidity and lazyness saves the day again.
I back up my guild's website every week. An hourly backup is made automatically by my home computer too. Not hard to do.
I think I'll let them sweat this one out and suffer.

@Sakesaru
Stupidity and laziness*
I bet you run windows, get off your high horse jackass.
Theserene Aug 18th 2007 6:54AM
IKT - Oh yes, because obviously only dumb people run windows...note the sarcasm there you noob. There is nothing wrong with running windows.
I work in corporate IT as well (962 Windows servers, 102 Linux servers and 95 Unix servers) and even the best laid plans for backup sometimes go horribly horribly wrong, as well demonstrated when a load of us got called in to rebuild our corporate website when part of the backups failed.
Asking other people for any data they have is standard disaster-recovery procedure for if you have exhausted all other options.
Tridus Aug 18th 2007 8:57AM
These people are also modders, not System Admins. Stuff happens.
They provide a great service to the community, for free. Now they're asking for help to recover from a disaster.
If your neighbor's kitchen was on fire, would you lecture them about not having a fire extinguisher, or would you grab yours and go help? Its just common decency, people.
Basic Aug 18th 2007 3:27PM
@1,3,5,7,13,15 - I'm sorry, all I heard was "I think I can do a better job, please come to my website and critique my mods and mod development site!"
dreadlorde Aug 22nd 2007 11:39PM
@5 they don't get ANY money unless someones donates. Do some research before you posting B/S
J Aug 24th 2007 6:17PM
@18 He was being sarcastic. Reading comprehension FTW!
