Breakfast Topic: The perfect server
Spiritus has a good quesiton on WoW Ladies: if you could transfer, right now, to any server, what would you look for in the server you moved to?What makes the perfect server? I can think of a lot of things that would go into the server decision.
- If you had friends there already (this was the reason I rolled on the server I'm on now)
- Server population
- Server age (you reroll locusts)
- AH prices
- Guilds and progression
- Server type (PvE, PvP, or RP)
- And does anyone consider the server name in their choice? Would you rather be on Arthas or Thrall?

An active server with a 1:1 A:H ratio that doesn't crash ever. And the name, anything old school before WoW.

Definitely
* Friends - Most of us changed server to still meet our friends
* Server population - who wants to play hardcore in a low populated server?
* Guilds and progression - Very important if you feel dedicated to high end

I consider horde-alliance ratios when starting a new toon, because on my main's server there aren't many horde which leads to less items in the AH.

Don't forget time zone. Nothing like being on the east coast and playing on a west coast server where all weeknight raids go until midnight server time.

Yeah, time zone, population, and friends are really what matters to me. As long as its medium (I play on low now :x), eastern, and some guilds are looking for hunters, im fine :D

Warsong is the perfect server!
(not)

Wow, bit over the top there number 6.
Anyway this has been troubling me since I keep starting horde characters that I seriously want to play but am hesitant to level past 10. Last thing I want is to get into the 30's or even 40's and realize that I'm on just an awful server and it's really too late re-re-roll if I ever want to see Outland again. At the same time you're not really going to be able to see behind the curtain until your 30's or 40's if not later.
Guess I could spam all the realm forums and see who has the least nasty things to say about their server.

The perfect server you say? How about a server with 1:1 ratio of horde to alliance, full of guilds that love nothing more than to help their guildies grind rep and get to 70 as fast as possible, who won't mind lending you that 10g so you can finally get your mount. Where the AB's are so intense, the final scores are within 50 pts and everyone battles in Av instead of afking. Where the auction house prices dont fluctuate to major extremes so you can actually buy something you want and still have some change left. A server where healers and tanks alike are thanked countlessly for the great job they do, and PuGs dont squabble at each other about each others play style. Oh and a server with a mining node around every corner :)

Servers need people. World of Warcraft is a MMORPG! MASSIVE! much people!
I have 5 chars with lvl 70 and my fun is twinking. I would be glad if I had a server with full population at any level and all these guys using the LFG tool!
AH prices doesnt care. Roleplaying would be nice.

I like to consider that I got lucky with the server that was pretty much forced on me by my significant other - Illidan. I've come to enjoy the noteriety of the server (I always imagine a collective Alliance groan whenever somebody asks "Is the the server with the funeral video?" in trade chat, amongst other things), as well as the competitiive (to say the VERY least) Hordies always ganking me, since I tend to either be ganked in creative ways or have ridiculous things done to my body after death. Of course, I've chased a few mages all over Ashenvale myself. I've tried other servers, but none of them compare to Illidan, my lovely home of PvP adventures.
(but, if I switch, it's typically by name alone. I'm such a sucker for lore.)

@1 Sounds like Thrall, now stay away!!

The perfect server for me would be the Carebear server, where Alliance and Horde can join partys and raids togheter, talk to each other, visit each others cities, join the same guild and all that, Battlegrounds and Arenas would be mixed, both teams could have horde and alliance in them. Only time they would be enemies would be in Outdoor pvp objectives, once you start those you are Flagged enemies for the duration. This would never happen but fun to think about.

I sometimes feel guilty that I play Alliance on a server named after the half orc that killed the king of Stormwind, Garona.

Friends
Type (pvp,pve ,ect)
Time zone
H to A ratio
Population size,big but not huge
AH economy
Raid progresion
Server stability(no crashes)
Server style(some servers hold many fun events and such)
Name...it kinda matters sometimes.

perfect server? it would be the complete opposite of my current "worst server ever", dentarg...

I am rather surprised that there is no point yet mentioned on the society of a given server (other than perhaps the "server style" mention). While I am prone to think that real life and/or pre-WoW friends and server populations matter a great deal, the "feel" of a server is the next most important item on that list. Some servers are very chatty, very communicative, and generally have a strong sense of community. Some servers are more individualistic or insular within guilds. Some servers are more "carebear," some servers are more "ruthless." This is a nearly impossible thing to get a feel for, short of having a level 70 character (because that is where most people spend most of their time). You can get a flavor of it from /Trade, and the realm forums, and the like, but you can't really tell until you get all the way up.

I like the idea of #15's Carebear server. Back in DAoC, some of the best fun I ever had was on Gaheris, the mixed realm server.
