The Light and How to Swing It: Building a better Paladin

With that in mind, today I'd like to examine some of the reasons why paladins have been bickering, fighting, and sometimes engaging in outright hostility towards one another.
There are several reasons I feel paladins fight amongst themselves on the forums over their vision of what the class should be, and I've attempted to categorize them below.
Itemization:
Part of the problem is that many paladins feel increasingly frustrated for reasons that can primarily be traced back to itemization issues. Retribution may be fun, but requires the right type of gear to perform well in groups and raids. Protection is definitely the unsung hero these days -- considering that there seems to be a tank shortage on many servers -- but when compared to warriors, most paladins have a harder time becoming uncrushable and have less health on average, mostly due to points being spent in the wrong areas on Paladin tanking gear.
Retribution requires large amounts of attack power, melee crit, melee hit and a smattering of spell damage to be effective -- but with a couple of exceptions, most of the gear designed for retribution paladins is better suited for a Shockadin (Healing/DPS hybrid). As a result, many aspiring retributers that are in the know pick up gear designed for warriors, while those that are less informed pick up the Shockadin gear. This leads to inferior DPS for the Paladin, who ends up feeding the stereotype that retribution paladins are worthless noobs.
Protection items have many of the stats that are needed for the tank on the go, but not always in significant quantities. Blizzard seems to insist on spending stat points on Mana/5 for tanking gear. While the initial theory behind this was sound (paladins can't hold aggro without mana, so they need something to help with mana regen), experience has shown that with Spiritual Attunement, Mana/5 is almost completely pointless -- more than enough mana is regenerated by receiving heals. Thus, many pieces of protection gear are rendered inferior when compared to gear designed for warriors.
Wrath of the Lich King & Death Knights
On top of all of this frustration, Blizzard announced at BlizzCon that in Wrath of the Lich King a new hero class would be introduced -- the Death Knight. This quickly led to much speculation and heated debate on the Paladin forums -- some Holy paladins cheered, thinking that this would finally rid them of the Retnoobs. Retribution paladins seemed upset that instead of getting the buffs they felt are sorely needed, Blizzard ignored them altogether to focus on Death Knights.
While I'm of the opinion that the Death Knight will offer a different play style, and should be looked at as an alternative instead of a successor to the Retribution Paladin, there's a good chance that many paladins will simply take steps to obtain one out of sheer frustration. The constant mocking and general feeling of being at the bottom of the food chain that retribution paladins endure will certainly help push them to this end unless steps are taken by Blizzard to address some of the issues. It does look like change is coming, though it's still a little way into the future. Surprisingly, I haven't seen many Protection paladins complain about death knights -- according to Blizzard, they'll be viable tanks, and could potentially force my tanking brethren back into a healing role.
Despite all this, the Paladin population seems to be thriving -- Horde paladins have become a common sight, we're reasonably well represented in arenas and battlegrounds, and still highly desired both as tanks and healers in instances and raids.
Parallels with lore
Perhaps it is fitting that there has been (and continues to be) so much strife and upheaval within the Paladin class -- from a lore perspective, no other class has endured such hardships. When Arthas fell from grace he killed Uther Lightbringer, effectively scattering The Order of the Silver Hand. Without a strong leader, the remaining members of the order went their separate ways - some went off to form the Scarlet Crusade, others split into smaller factions or faded into obscurity.
More recently, paladins have had to deal with the fact that Blood Elves have forcefully stolen the power of the Light, and now twist it to meet their own ends -- this very act flies in the face of everything paladins have stood for since their creation after the end of the first war.
Still, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel -- there is compelling evidence that Tirion Fording, who many players will remember for his memorable quest chain in the Eastern Plaguelands, will rise and take his place as Highlord of the new Order of the Silver Hand in the next expansion. It would be nice to see the Paladin player base come together in a similar fashion, and remember that even with all the problems the class currently faces, we're still one of the most flexible classes around. Whether we're on the front line, protecting our allies from attack, or in the back, healing the wounds they receive, or even charging into the fight to provide buffs and smash our enemies, you can bet that if there's a battle, a Paladin will be there to help.
The future of the Paladin
Blizzard has stated that they will be addressing Paladin concerns in a future patch -- while this is nothing new (it seems that almost every patch there's rumored changes to the class), they seem to learn from previous mistakes, so it's possible that eventually the tweaking will yield positive results.
I would like to encourage everyone who plays a Paladin to be tolerant of your fellows. You may not agree with how they are specced, but try to acknowledge that everyone plays this game for fun, and what is considered fun differs from person to person. Instead of ridiculing that Retribution Paladin in spell damage gear, suggest ways in which he might improve his DPS. Instead of telling a Protection Paladin that if they wanted to tank they should've rolled a Warrior, try thinking about the advantages that prot paladins have over other tanks. Instead of complaining about how Illumination was nerfed and that all your healing gear with spell crit on it is now worthless, focus on how much you're envied for your efficiency and survivability by all those Holy priests out there.
In the meantime, brothers and sisters, stay strong, and keep swinging that light!

Here's to hoping that 2.3 will count.

After playing a paladin for 3 years, all there is left to say is "Far too little, Far too late."
I've been a habitual cancel nancy since tbc came out. 1.9 was the peak of the retribution paladin and its been downhill since. with each patch they promise something new and great but it always turns out the same, mediocricy, it doesn't fix the core issue of itemization, and no "class change" will fix an item issue.

It's been a love/hate relationship between me and my Paladin. I've been a Horde player since 2005 and I used to abhor Paladins with a passion. Ironically, it's now my favorite class, relegating my 70 Shaman and former main to an alt role.
Frankly, I don't know why this is so. The Paladin is an extremely frustrating class to play. It's inherently flawed in that it's a melee class without any baseline melee strikes. It's a healing class with only three baseline healing spells (one of which is on a 1-hour timer). I love the Paladin because it's challenging. I hate the Paladin because it doesn't let me play the way I want to play - coming from DPS classes (Rogue, Hunter, Shaman), I found the Paladin to require a completely different playing style.
I'm hoping that Blizzard recognizes what Paladins need and actually makes changes that help move the class forward. I'm currently specced Holy now, but I would honestly like to see Retribution be more viable in raids. I'm sure I'm not the only Paladin who feels this way.

Only reason I'm playing my paladin right now is its the only Horde tank that looks good. Oh yes, I have a female troll warrior.. She's dead to me.

After retribution has eaten nothing but dust from the developers since the game's release (the talents revamp for TBC was a change, but in the end it failed) I don't see why they will fix it now. Has the upcoming hero class Death Knight something to do with it?
It certainly has nothing to do with the forum whine, it has been pretty constant over the years.
Oh and I am a blood elf paladin by the way - holy in wait for retribution revamp, complete epic set gathering dust in the bank.

I still feel that my Paladin out-performs my rogue damn near any day of the week.
Too bad I cant get a group for either.

It's true that most Protection Paladins have a more difficult time reaching uncrushability and comparable health pools to warriors, but I'd suggest you replace "most" with "all". Paladins have 1300 less health at class base than Warriors. Paladins have 45% less block from their main shield ability than warriors, and thus have to allocate more of their overall item budget to reaching uncrushability. Since the Spiritual Attunement nerf, most Paladins have found that they cannot afford to ignore their "caster stats", and thus have to spread the budget even thinner. These issues work themselves out to a degree as gear gets better (around T6 it almost ceases to be an issue), but for 95% of the Protection Paladins out there it's just plain painful.
A Paladin will have less health than a comparably geared warrior. The real problem is that the greatest difference occurs at the beginning of the raid game. For a guild in BT the differences are minor, almost coming down to playstyle and raid composition. For a guild in Gruul's Lair it's day and night. Protection Paladins are at their worst in the first 25-slot raids, right when most guilds are making decisions about what classes they're going to have doing what. This isn't to say it can't be done, more that it requires a VERY forward-thinking guild to even get a decent chance.
Protection Paladins need some changes to the class base to get around these issues. The base health issue is the main problem, but some tweaks to reduce the needed stat diversity would also be helpful. These changes need to NOT involve more points spent in Protection. The tree is already ridiculously bloated (most Tankadins opt for 0/49/12, with 3 of those points being semi-discretionary).

Of course t6 is less of a problem. It doubles SA, allowing for mana to come in even better.

Seriously, can we stop with the Paladin articles? That's all I ever hear anymore, pally this pally that...what about the other classes, shamans get NO love, nor do Mages or Warriors, hardly hear anything about those classes, if it were not for Krystalle we wouldn't hear about rogues either! Let the pallies to rest already!

Speaking of paladin love, I just started a new website and forum devoted to the almighty tankadin...

...it needs some regulars to jumpstart the forums.

Well Im a Holy Ret 44/0/17.
I have two sets of armor, one for healing that gives me a holy spell crit for 22% unbuffed and only 780 increase of healing.
My second set is not that great yet and I'm still working on it but its a DPS and crit strike armor for two handed sword.
so far i do well, i crit heal people with holy light in raid as main healer for over 6k health and in arena i go around smacking people double 600 damage and crit for over a 1k
Now i haven't really been apart of all those forums and people bickering back and forth how a paladin or "blood knight" should be played. I made my char after trial and error and allot of respects.
I love playing this char and i have been playing for a long time now. The only improvement i would ever really want to see with paladins would have been duel wielding weapons (like shammys got) but now thats not going to happen with death knights coming...

It's pretty upsetting when I hear about the amount of hate paladins get in the USA (examples from Blizzcon). Why is that? Surely 12 seconds of dispellable immunity every 5 minutes isn't the reason for all the hatred? Not like that in the EU.
Anywhoo - I agree something should have been done much quicker after paladins were found to be standing back and healing in MC, ZG and BWL (and AQ and Naxx later on). But it was left for years. Now they're still doing it in the majority.
One of the reasons I quit my paladin was the abuse (pre-TBC) we got from fellow raid members about both healing and buffing (WTF I ONLY HAVE 3 MINUTES LEFT ON SALV REBUFF NOWWWWW!). Just got tiresome after a while. I enjoyed our utility in Karazhan but then healing got too annoying.
Now I just spec ret for battlegrounds and holy for arena - its weird that I feel like I'm playing 2 totally different characters between respecs as there is little to no synergy between the talent trees.

Erm.. a pally ran and left the priest to die in the WotLK trailer...

It's not called "The light and how to swing it" for nothing, this is a paladin post, if you don't like it don't read it.
When it comes to this, ret paladins need some serious work on them. I for one am a ret paladin and I have no trouble finding groups because I work hard in proving those people who think "ret nubs can't DPS" with my current gear (2 pieces season 1 and 3 pieces season 2 plus a Deep Thunder) i'm out DPS'ing most classes in parties, heroics and even raids. The tree still needs a lot of revamp and love from the Dev's, but until then i'll keep on doing my thing to make us good in the eyes of other non beleivers.
I'm just gonna feel sorry for the other classes when we finnaly get revamped and become "easy mode" cause right now things are far from easy for a paladin, unlike other classes.

Nice informative post.
The part about gear is a bit misplaced though. The pvp/arena gear for retribution is a really nice and balanced gear for what retribution pally should be.
Melee crit, AP, deep mana pool, decent spell dmg, melee dps hybrid. The sad thing is, that none of the instance/ raid loot are clearly designed for this ( same thing goes for "shockadin offspec).
In most cases it misses most important thing - melee crit. And to finish, no retadin would taky pally gear without Strength in it (which is what one would call "shockadin" gear)

What's rough - is those of us who love Retribution, would like to raid with it, but both abhor and suck at pvp/arena. It's much tougher to gear up via PvE alone.

The centeral theme of these arguements seem to be..
"I want one toon who can do it all - the way i want to do it. And I want that toon to be a ______ speced _____" (Blanks = all classes & all specs)
I gave up on this and now run three toons.
Holy pally - Instance ONLY (Questing is not fun)
Shadow priest - Quests and money/drop grinds
Rogue - PvP
This toon trinity is my reality and I accept it. I enjoy healing and consider my pally my main but questing in SMV and killing 71+ mobs is no fun.
I do feel that some classes/builds are OP and some lack versitilty(I feel your pain tanks who cant even PVP). But I didn't make the game, so I play with what I got and have fun.
