Shamanistic suggestions
Shamans are a fun and engaging class that combine a strong, complex array of totems with various spells used to inflict damage or to heal. As if that wasn't enough, they also are able to wear shields and mail, making them a very durable combat caster and earning them the ire of the other casting classes. If properly specced, they can even venture into melee range and smash faces. By all accounts, they are a powerful class. But there are some downsides. Shamans have complained for a long time about the vulnerability of their totems in PvP encounters, they've become extremely vocal about their lack of CC, and some would like more options when it comes to casting shocks. They are weaknesses, to be sure. But do they cripple the class? More of a hindrance, in my opinion.
These are some of the most common complaints I've seen lately:
- Totems need a buff, because they are an easy target in a PvP encounter; suggestions for fixing this range from increasing the health of totems to removing the health entirely and just requiring 2 or 3 direct hits from an enemy.
- Every class has a CC ability but us, and we have only 2 snares, one of which is a totem and is easily destroyed.
- Buff our shocks! Take earth shock off global cooldown, increase the duration of frost shock, etc.
It seems unfair that totems should get a buff in PvP -- especially when many classes have to deal with having their own buffs purged or dispelled off. And while it's true that every other class has some form of CC, they're not always useful or usable at all times. Regarding shocks... well, Earth Shock is one of the best interrupts in the game, and definitely the one on the shortest cooldown.
I have other concerns about the class that I think should receive more focus, such as mana regeneration and getting some kind of anti-kite ability. But what do you other shamans out there think?

As a protection warrior I honestly couldn't care less about shamans lack of CC. I have 1 form of CC intimidating shout. By far the worst fear in the game 3 min CD fears 5 people 1 of which has to be targeted and any damage taken by that person brakes the fear.

Threat management.
I spec 0/45/16, and I love getting in the thick with both hands flailing. However, with no real way (spirit weapons is a weak passive) to control my threat, I either spend an entire fight glued to my KTM or find myself dead.
I am just about to a rogue level of melee DPS, and with the shocks, stormstrike and totems, I generate a crazy amount of threat at times.
I would love to have Blizzard look into something in the enhancement tree, that would give a real threat reduction. Also, if I could get some of my repair money back, that would be great.

As a shaman, I honestly DO care. See, #1, prot warriors have TWO CC's. you got the stun skill, AND the fear. What do I have? Nothing. Nothing. how do i get that rogue off my ass? I dont. no CC. NONE. Least be glad you have some CC, no matter how bad they may be.

I don't think it is unfair to buff totems. But they should not be invincible. What should be required is that they should be able to withstand a single wand attack. It's so unfair when I place a grounding totem down only to have a "pure" caster spec wand it an proceed to nuke me after I use up my Earth Shock. Sure, I can purge but it costs mana. What does a wand attack cost? When my grounding totem gets wanded by a 3 minute mage, and they they almost one shot me, counterspell my heal and nuke me to death, it sucks.

Sure, buff the Totems but make them breakable by AoE.

I've noticed that my totems generally *don't* get targeted in PvP ... I do instead, just like how pets are generally ignored but the hunter gets taken down instead. For PvP, I'd be happy if my totems didn't just fizzle the moment I die - this doesn't happen in PvE for starters, and hey, I'm a shaman with a self-rez capability, this means I've retained some tenuous grip on the mortal realm surely.
Have the totems continue until I either release or get my insignia taken. At least that way the opposing faction gets to enjoy whacking my 5hp totems. kthxbye.

Well of course classes other than Shamans won't understand, care, or will have complaints about their own class and that is understandable.
Anyways, I think the easiest way to give Shamans a form of CC is to give a 4th shock, but one that stuns. Air Shock? I don't know. Have it do the least damage out of all of the shocks, have a low mana cost, but a higher and seperate cooldown. That way when a Rogue is stunlocking me I can do something other than earthbind, which gets destroyed anyways.
As for totem buffs? I like the idea of 3 hits in a row, no AoE. Maybe not for all totems, but in their current form totems are worthless in PvP. And you may say "Well you can purge!"... sure we can purge, but your Arcane Intellect / MoTW / etc. still serve a purpose in a BG / PvP whereas my totems don't stand a chance and have little to no effect other than draining my mana.

Well, the only real solution is to make Shamans invincible. That will solve the whole problem.
Seriously, a form of CC would be nice, but I don't think it's strictly necessary. What I'd like to see are a few more shaman abilities based on the lore. Effective abilities, that is. Bring me some ghost wolves as summonable (but temporary) pets, and see how much fun a shaman could be!
However, while I have had many ideas on how shamans could be changed and improved, I haven't been able to come up with one that would both improve shamans, and avoid significantly upsetting the game balance. You don't want to fix the weakness for a given class, and then find yourself dealing with all the complaints about how they've been overpowered.
Ryan Aug 22nd 2007 11:42PM
Level 1 earth shock w/ no cooldown would be so overpowered it's not even funny.!

I'd like to see totem health scale with the Shaman as he/she levels. It is insane that the totems can be one shot by lowbies.
I would also like to see totem mobility or reduced/removed cooldown on cast. The amount of time it takes to recast totems is crazy.
I don't personally have any gripes with the shocks. An air shock that stuns could be cool as a solution to cc... maybe make it something on par with the Tauren warstomp. But, I think the cooldowns are fine.
As a shaman, I see a lot of people making suggestion that would definitely make us OP and removing the cooldown on earthshock would definitely fall into that category.
I mainly play enhancement but have tried elemental and I do have to say that shaman could use something other than lightning bolt as an offensive cast. Fighting the elementals in Nagrand sucks a lot when they are immune to most of your casts ( =flame shock and really bad melee)

Totems getting a buff for pvp durability unfair?
Tell me how many classes does a mage worry about loosing their buffs to? I can tell u how many a shaman looses them to... all of them. When u fight a caster do just watch them wand away ur buffs before casting at u? No.
When your getting beaten on as a mage, can u iceblock? Yes. Can u dump ur aggro as a mage/lock? Yes. Can you CC ur opponent while u focus on another? Yes.
Can you kite a player in Arena with little concern about diminishing returns? Yes.
Well shamans cant do any of those life saving, wipe avoiding, crucial cc/dps abilities. The only reason shamans continue to succeed is because the general player base of shamans are more skilled than the pure classes.
They are the least played class, have the poorest gear itemisation available to them in end-game raiding but nonetheless players persist and perform despite more nerfs than buffs.
Mana regen is fine (l2itemise), dps itself is fine, and mail rarely buys u more time in a encounter or even arena mage than cloth.
PS a shield doesnt block attacks when ur casting... considering thats what resto/elem shamans do 90% of the time and enhance shamans DW or use a 2H, theyre of little more benefit than a OH item for other casters

To #2 - Totally agree with you about aggro management. Unless we're glued to KTM, we don't have any form of aggro dump. Toss in a few extra WF crits, and you can kiss our butts goodbye.
Personally, when I get jumped by a rogue either in world PvP, or BG (Or Arena) I pray for one of two things. One, my natures swiftness is available, so I can NS a big heal to turn the tide (I can't live without NS, any spec I've used) or two I have my Warstomp up (not a class skill, but it's the only reason I went Tauren).
So.. If Blizz wanted to fix, or at least toss the shaman community a bone, maybe for the PvE side, some form of aggro dump.. On the PvP side, maybe a minor form of CC, something that could take a class out of the picture, even for only a few seconds (or not at all if they have their trinket on.) The closest thing we have is Kiting with frost shock/earth bind.. not exactly CC.. /shrug.
How about, a huge buff to chain heal, just for kicks? Resto Sham FTW.

Oh yeah, removing the global cooldowns on totems would rock too... ;-)
CVJ Aug 23rd 2007 12:18AM
@2 You say you are close to a rogue in dps and worry about threat? that is the downside of you being able to keep up in dps with a class who's main function is dps. If you got an agro dumping function like rogues have and are able to do decent dps then it would not be fair to the rogues since you can buff and heal sort of like ret pallies wanting dps buffs.
I played a shaman to 63 and I really had to push myself to get that far hoping it would get better but I just kept thinking "this class is retarded".
Dropping a totem activates global cooldown, you need pre 60 at least a couple of totems to be decent leveling wise and pre 60 I found my mana efficiency was really bad but I guess that is the price I pay for being able to kill something really quick.

Air Shock
Initial Level: 35
AoE: Cone shooting from SHaman out to a distance of 20 yards and expanding 10 yards at max point.
Effect: Causes Damage that scales with AGL, and pushes opponent back, resisted by STR. Some enemies cannot be effected. Effect can be resisted, and is on common timer with other effects.

@ Babamucha... Shamans *cannot* tank - nor should they be able to. A Shaman is an offensive hybrid - Paladins are a defensive hybrid, hence being able to tank and heal - shamans can dps and heal. Druids are a little broken in this manner - they can tank, heal and dps. OF course, this generally means re-speccing, but that goes the same for a Resto Shaman who wants to DPS.
I rolled my Shaman deliberately to go Resto - if dps is needed for an instance, I'll bring my mage. So far I've healed all the way up to the Curator without an issue - my mage is only two bosses ahead, at the Prince.
Still, aggro can be an issue. Stoneclaw Totem is a joke in an instance - it seems to put out exactly 1 threat. So, if I have any other threat on a target - including healing threat, then it won't pull aggro off me. Crowd control I could take or leave - but aggro generation can be a big deal when things go pear shaped.

@14
Im not asking for a full aggro dump, just something to mitigate. Like comment 12 said, when my Windfury Double proc's on a boss w/ 5 sunders on it, im a mess on the bottom of their foot.
I've played this shaman up to the Curator, Prince is coming next week. I am very good at keeping my threat down, but at the cost of DPS for my group.
I play the shammy so I can fill many roles, im not looking to be the best at DPS, its never going to happen. I just would like to be do as well as the class can.
As far a PvP CC goes, that Air Shock sounds like a good idea, put a longer CD on it to keep people from QQ'ng about us being OP again, and it would rock.
Jayus Aug 23rd 2007 1:12AM
only class without CC? wth? come-off it, warrior/paladin fears are hardly viable CC either, how about them rogues... when was the last time anyone used sap...
Shamans are fine. sure the totems could be improved, but they are hardly as bad off as people claim
Mongolor Aug 23rd 2007 1:18AM
@18
"when was the last time anyone used sap"
Umm, how about all the freaking time?
Sap is a great CC for PvE.
Warrior fear is good enough for PvP.
Pally's can bubble, so if one fails, its the other.
We have no CC, period.
