Totem Talk: Hi, I'm a Shaman. Take me to your instance.

Totem Talk is the column for Shaman players. Matthew Rossi plays a Shaman. It's like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup except with less peanut butter and chocolate and more talking about Shaman issues. According to WoWwiki, the correct plural of Shaman is Shamans. This seems weird to me, but I guess they should know, they're a Wiki.
Well, we could spend a lot of time messing about, but this week we have already seen that Shamans have issues. The comment thread this generated is very long and very rancorous. To be honest, that's the way the Shaman forums gets sometimes, too. Being the proud papa of two shammies, a level 70 resto on the Horde side and a level 44 enhancement on Alliance, I feel like I should say that I really love the class. It's fun and engaging. I leveled as Elemental to 50, Enhancement from 50 to 70, and specced Restoration for my guild, which of course means that the only mail that drops is Enhancement or Elemental. My healing kit? Way too many Elemental pieces I've socketed to try and make up the difference. But ultimately, I love my Shamans and I love playing them.
And yes, the angry Shaman players are right. There are problems with the Shaman.
Part of the problem is scalability. We all remember back before The Burning Crusade launched when a properly geared and specced Enhancement shaman could rip people's faces off. Hell, I used to take my warrior into BG's and get Windfury-laden Sulfuras shots that would annihilate me. I remember the resentment folks Alliance side felt about Shamans.
That time is long past. Between 60 and 70, shaman don't scale as well as the other classes. Gear can make up some of this difference... I defy you to fight an Elemental shaman in full T5 and say he doesn't do significant damage... but especially for the Enhancement tree, the DPS you can put out just doesn't scale with the stamina on items out there. A properly geared shaman with a good set of weapons (most seem to like slow main hands, trying to get around the hidden three second cooldown on Windfury) can still do really nice burst damage, but it's hardly as overwhelming as it once seemed. When I was enhance I preferred a 2h, to be honest, as it's much easier to find a 2h weapon that will be slow enough to avoid the 3 second cooldown and its damage draining effect. But dual wield is still most likely superior for enhance DPS.
Elemental is still the best sustained damage tree for a shaman, but it is also the most likely to run out of mana, especially with recent changes to Elemental Focus. I understand that people were using Rank 1 lightning bolts to proc their clearcasting state and then popping out their biggest damage spells while they were free... but to be honest, I don't get why that was a problem. Still, much less likely to happen now.
In the end you have two trees that aren't as desirable and take more skill and gear to perform well and one tree that gets instance invites. I'm sure there are Enhancement and Elemental shamans out there who are getting into PuG's, or being brought on runs by smart guildies who enjoy the combination of shaman abilities and the powerful buffs of their totems. In PvP, a resto shaman can make him or herself practically unkillable by certain players with the right totems and studious application of Earth Shield. I've personally killed warriors by just dropping Searing Totem, Healing Stream and throwing Earth Shield on myself over and over again, but it's a long, slow grind and it counts on him not getting any help, not getting a few good crits in a row with Mortal Strike to cut my healing in half, and most of all not killing my totems over and over again with area effect attacks like Whirlwind. (He would have to target the totem, hit WW and then switch back to me, but that's not especially hard to do.) Elemental might well be the best PvP spec for shamans, I wouldn't know because I haven't had the gear to really try it out, but Enhancement is definitely not. So what does that leave the typical Enhancement shaman to do?
Instances. Enhancement shamans are trying to get an instance run, basically, and they're trying to do it by convincing groups that their buffing ability via totems is as good or better than bringing another DPSer who can sap, sheep, seduce, banish or trap, and who will probably be capable of significantly outdamaging the shaman without pulling aggro. (Rogues, Mages, Warlocks and Hunters all have aggro control far superior to a shaman, as well. Granted, warlock aggro control consists of having a specific pet out and managing Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Agony and Fear.) These are all problems Elemental shamans will face as well. A DPS class without aggro control and without crowd control needs something to counterbalance those deficits, and in the case of shamans the attraction is supposed to be buffs.
Why, then, doesn't it seem to be working? Why are shamans the least played class overall, less popular than paladins on Horde side, and by far the least played Alliance class? It's understandable to some extent on Alliance side, as only one race can play them there, but three out of five Horde races can play shamans and yet only druids, who are only playable by one race, are less represented there. And both shaman and druid are playable by one race in the Alliance, so that doesn't even hold true there. Is it just that it's a new class to them? If that were all, wouldn't paladins be as rare Horde side? This is clearly not the case.
To my mind, the real issue is totems. Totems provide the best buffs in the game, and four of them can be down at once, buffing strength, agility, healing or mana regen, granting windfury, flametongue, an AoE fire totem... totems are versatile and the hallmark of the class. But as so many have point out, totems are on the global cooldown, meaning that it takes valuable seconds to cast them. Totems are mana intensive, meaning that a shaman may have to stop and drink after dropping them. Totems are short duration, lasting at the most two minutes for the most part, and have no timer to tell the shaman when they will expire. Unless you keep an egg timer or a stopwatch handy, the first you'll know your mana spring totem is expiring is when it expires. Totems don't move, meaning that they have to be dropped within range of the players you intend to buff with them. Some of these factors are essential for shamans to retain their unique flavor... I don't think I'd want totems to float around me... but some are ridiculous holdovers from an earlier time that have been superseded by changes in the game. The duration of totems and their lack of timers? These need fixing. The inability to drop your totems quickly? Their ridiculously low health? How many other buffs can be purged off of an entire party with one well placed wand-shot? (This is, admittedly, more of a PvP issue.) At least the 20 minute cooldown elemental guardian totems have a little health.
To sum it up, shamans are not perfect, immortal gods who can one shot other players with impunity and who can wander through instances in full DPS gear while still slapping massive chain heals around left and right. I personally think that restoration spec is pretty darn good right now, and both Elemental and Enhancement, especially Enhance, need some love. We know some is coming, and it's welcome. To my mind, the shaman might well be the most interestingly diverse class in the game, and these problems aren't enough to justify people's aversion to it. With their buffing ability and versatility a few fixes should be all it takes to help make them a popular and viable hybrid.

There is an add-on I have that show me small text in the middle of my screen that lets me know when a totem is about to expire and then again when the totem is "destroyed".
I found about it through a wowinsider article I do believe

Some good points here, but whining about the lack of totem timers is just... well, whining, sorry. There are plenty of excellent addons for this out there, TotemTimers, Totemus etc, and on top of that, Blizz _has_ said that a native totem timer is coming.
ringu0 Aug 26th 2007 3:13PM
> ...Blizz _has_ said that a native totem timer is coming.
... an year ago. But, yeah, let's just accuse shaman of whining, it seems to be trendy nowadays.
Carlin Aug 26th 2007 3:41PM
If you're spec'd to anything other than Resto, don't whine when you can't get a group invite.
Spec something useful and stop gimping yourself.
Leo Aug 26th 2007 3:55PM
If shaman do not scale well, care to explain why most Black Temple guilds take 5 shaman and only 2 of many other classes?
ringu0 Aug 26th 2007 3:58PM
Oh, ever so useful "respec IMO" comment. Thank god it wasn't something more generic, something along the lines of "l2p". I guess these comments are yet to be added.
Anyway.
Carlin, wanna send me 15 bucks a month so I can play the spec I like less than my current one? 15 bucks is not a big deal, it's not like you will be gimping yourself. Think about it, preferably before you're placing another snappy comment somewhere else.
ringu0 Aug 26th 2007 4:02PM
> ...care to explain why most Black Temple guilds take 5 shaman and only 2 of many other classes?
Care to remind me the percentage of statistics made up right on the spot?
Anyway, I think I can guess where you stopped reading. Just a few lines later, the author writes "the DPS you can put out just doesn't scale with the stamina on items out there".
So there we go. He's talking about DPS in PvP, you're talking about healing in PvE. Apples and oranges. Next question?
Matthew Rossi Aug 26th 2007 4:35PM
IF Black Temple guilds are taking 5 shaman and 2 of everyone else, that would mean they're bring one shaman per group. One shaman per group = 4 totems to buff each group. It would also mean they were running with 21 people, unless by 'many' you mean 'some'.
Again, I play a resto shaman, and I love him, and I don't mind the spec at all. But why is it acceptable for Ret Paladins and Feral Druids to complain about their issues until they get fixed, but not for Enhancement Shamans? Tell me honestly, would you rather bring a rogue with sap or an shammy with no CC to DPS in your Heroic Slabs run?
I'm very hopeful the new talents for enhance shammies will help them in PvP and instances, and I think a lot of the rage on the shaman forums in counterproductive. But if you went from a powerful, versatile class at 60 to feeling like an easily killed joke that has to spec resto to heal OR PvP, and no one would listen, you might get frustrated too. As a currently resto, I feel it's my job to stand up for the guys in my class who aren't getting the support.
Imagine if holy pallies actually backed retadins instead of sniping at them. That's what I want to do in this column. All shammies should be supported and represented, not just my favorite spec.
Memzer Aug 26th 2007 5:29PM
The problems you discussed above are not limited to the Shaman class at all. I can name a few retribution paladins that would give their left nut for a threat wipe or some form of reliable crowd control. Unfortunately there has to be a trade off for playing a hybrid class - this is it.
As mentioned in your post mages, warlocks, hunters, and rogues all have better forms of crowd control and better threat control than that of hybrids; but that's all they bring to the table. No matter how you spec any of those classes they will never be able to tank or heal for a group*. If Blizzard increases the DPS and CC utility of hybrids to the same level of these classes there would be absolutely no reason to play them; Who would play a rogue when they could play a Shaman that could output the same dps, sheep and if it gets into trouble run off and heal...
With regards to getting a group I guess it depends on your server but in general it is difficult to get a group period as a person playing a DPS role. As I'm an alliance player shamans definitely do have it a bit worse though because people don't understand how to utilise their abilities correctly in five man content. "Uhh shaman... you just do your thing man". But this tends to be less of an issue in raid content.
All of the above said if Blizzard do feel it's too much of an issue and decide to give Shamans these abilities I would love to see shamans get a mind control totem (like the mobs have) which can mind control a random hostile in range to fight for your party. In my opinion the shaman wouldn't be able to control the MCs abilities or perhaps enough control to tell it to attack/follow/stay.
* Yes, yes - there are some *specific* encounters where these classes get to play as a tank.
Nasgul Aug 26th 2007 5:39PM
Tell me, would you rather bring a rogue with sap and no buffs, or a shaman with cc and buffs to your heroic Slabs run? Sorry for saying it so sarcastically, but these people have to fix problems over all classes, so buffing up one area of one class, needed or not, will probably only lead to whining on rogue forums about how they're losing out on 5-mans too and not just raids as it is. I imagine Shamans will get some much-needed love soon, and honestly, I know there are ways to balance it without shamans taking Other dpsers slots, I'm just pointing out that all the classes were designed with strengths and weaknesses in mind, for better or worse. It's just a matter of Blizzard understanding that some of their weaknesses, particularly where Shamans are involved, are too weak, and depriving those who enjoy playing that class without speccing resto extremely limited opportunities. I play a warlock though. I get invited to all the fun, so I am probably biased.

QQ, The issues you say aren't all correct.
Elemental is one of the best sepcs, for pve and pvp. It supplies buffs while doing damage. If you go oom your aren't chugging pots/its your gear.
Paladins on the other hand only have one tree that is worth speccing more than 20 points into. Holy. When that gets fixed you can get your 3rd tree fixed.
Fletch Aug 26th 2007 6:25PM
All I can say is that I hope shamans either get some form of crowd control or that WotLK isn't nearly as CC dependent as BC was (preferably the latter). I can't stand bringing a shaman to any of the BC instances since every pull is like ten mobs.
Leo Aug 26th 2007 6:42PM
"So there we go. He's talking about DPS in PvP, you're talking about healing in PvE. Apples and oranges. Next question?"
Only so far as, relative to the number of people playing them, they are grossly over-represented in deep End Game raiding currently.
But of course, we wouldn't want to look on the bright side of anything, would we?
QQ, whine
ringu0 Aug 26th 2007 6:33PM

Numbers, actual numbers, care to show them?

Click on just about any boss.
Also, windfury totem is a staple of any melee dps group at this point. Our enhancement shaman out dps our mages on a regular basis.

Oh so that must be how ten paladins can clear most of Karazhan -- they simply heal mobs to death. Call me when you see the video of ten shaman clearing it, then we'll talk. Until then, go learn something new, like... say... Protection tree?

Well, I'm playing an elemental specced shaman on an EU-Server from 1 to 70. There are some things that you can't deny, they are facts:
1. Compared to other dd-classes there are little useable Items you can get in the early and mid end-game for an elemental shaman (the dungeon set is - surprise surprise - for resto shamans)
2. There is a mana leak for long fights - even if you spent some talent points for mana sustainability - it isn't sufficient for the casual gamer. I must admit that it is difficult to balance a burst-machine for long fights, but I don't see a working elemental instance build. Suggestions are highly welcomed!
3. The Elemental-Shaman is very powerful in PvP. If you know your class and get some experience with what the others do, you will knock down your so-so enemys with a movement of your (casting) hand. Nevertheless it seems like gear/items are the most important part on how good you survive in PvP! Why does nobody complains about full arena equipped people who just breath to make you lose half of your energy! Even more, they got so much stamina and resilince that you might dream of hurting them seriously!
4. Totems, totems, totems! They definitly are strong and as you all have said - their weaknesses are annoying! The most annoying part is that some of them are quite expensive (for that the can purged so easily by every class) and lie on a global timer. During a fight you won't set other totems as an ele, 'cause your next lightning bolt is on the same global timer (which means quite a lot less dps!). In combination with the above mentioned mana problem I see 2 solutions: make them cheaper or halve the cooldown for totem dropping!

Thanks for the insightful post, it's good to hear from someone who actually has experience with the class. I play an Enhancement shaman to feed my need to switch things up and do some melee damage (my main is a 70 warlock). I really think that the some of the proposed changes to the enhancement tree that were accidentally shown at Blizzcon will really help.
For example - they aren't giving us an aggro dump, instead they're giving us a 30% damage reduction on our Shamanistic Rage buff, which means you'll hopefully be able to survive long enough for your tank to get aggro back.
Although the other changes I saw seemed to focus more on the mana / shock / spell damage component of Enhancement Shaman which I feel is a little backwards, but any extra DPS & longevity is welcome :)

Ok. Numbers, numbers, numbers.
I browsed the first ten fights against Teron Gorefiend and Reliquary of Souls that matched the following criteria:
-- 25 people in the raid
-- the kill was made after Aug 9th (the day they nerfed WF totem)
First, the raid participation split by classes:
-- Teron Gorefiend
shaman/priest: 14.4%
warrior: 13.2%
paladin: 12.0%
warlock: 11.2%
rogue: 9.6%
mage: 9.2%
hunter/druid: 8.0%
--Reliquary of Souls
shaman/warrior: 14.0%
priest: 12.0%
warlock: 11.6%
paladin: 11.2%
rogue: 10.8%
druid: 10%
mage: 8.2%
hunter: 8%
Ok, that does look weird, the least played class (shaman curently are at 7%, according to warcraftrealms) is one of the most played classes in BT. Now, let's take a look at the specs (or, rather, at the type of damage dealt. which, I hope, is the same):
enhancement: 32.5%
elemental: 14.0%
restoration: 53.5%
There goes the opinion about elemental generally being "one of the best sepcs". Raid-wise the best is, of course, restoration, thanks to Chain Heal, I guess.
RogueJedi86 Aug 26th 2007 9:23PM
I assume the lack of Shaman gear refers mainly to Elemental and Enhancement Shaman? Because I know quite a few pieces of high-end healing mail that many Holy Paladins wear, because they can't find equal or better healing plate. Resto gear that.
