Forum Post of the Day: You're old school when...
Over on the official forums, there's a nostalgic discussion of how to tell an old-school WoW player from a newbie. (Of course there's game knowledge -- but there's always the chance a newbie might have taken the time to read up!) So what makes the difference between an old-school player from the rest? Well, if you remember any of this, you're old school:
- When Dire Maul was new
- When Warlocks were free HKs
- When you had to go to the Barrens or Ashenvale to sign up for WSG
- When Alterac Valley lasted at least 8 hours a match
- When you could run 40 players through Stratholme, Scholomance, Blackrock Depths, Blackrock Spire, etc.
- When the sight of a full dungeon 1 set was impressive

I remember when Priest Dungeon Set 1 finally got its 'proper' graphics.
Before that, devout was a bizarre orange affair that made my dwarf look like a traffic cone ;D

When the barrens chat wasnt so full of chuck norris.
When Vanish actually worked.

My first character was a warlock and I made a rule NEVER to pvp coz I'd die and all I'd be was a free kill. I did so until the BGs came out.
ANd seriously, 10 manning scholo was absolutely awesome.

When Tauren ran really, really fast.

Now here's a question, I started up WoW in September 05 and then I only played a dwarf warrior to 16 before getting bored and taking a couple months off. So even then I was aware of everything like I was now and so my question is, was WoW, amongst the classes and races, more differentiated then it is now? I read about Taurens running faster and though I can see why it got balanced it also has a certain charm to it because it's different. Sometimes I think class and race balance has made things more vanilla then it should be.

Earliest major change I remember was the introduction of Rest in beta. The cities weren't "inns" at the time... you had to find the actual inn within the city to get Rest when you logged out.

You know your old school when you remember the UI looking like EQ.

When being 60 on the server was a accomplishment.
Charlie Sep 4th 2007 11:13AM
Seems like thats all 6 months into the game, i remember all that, but i was like level 10 when must of that stuff changed (other than the tauren thing).
I think its amazing that there are so many new people to this game. There are tons of raiders who weren't even 60 when BC launched. Its incredible

When SS-TM was THE battleground.
Oh and 8 hour AVs? More like AVs that lasted for days.
RJ Sep 4th 2007 11:33AM
I remember when you couldn't go to TM without seeing a carpet of skeletons covering every inch of the town.
Gungolf Sep 4th 2007 11:40AM
When after a few hours no kill in AV gave you honor because you already had killed everybody more than three times.

ah, lets see:
* When Dire Maul was new
well, i beta-tested the place, so...
* When Warlocks were free HKs
back when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, yes.
* When you had to go to the Barrens or Ashenvale to sign up for WSG
i'd say easily 1/3 of the 300+ days played i have on my main was standing around in frickin' ashenvale waiting for the frickin' WSG queue to pop.
* When Alterac Valley lasted at least 8 hours a match
8 hours? pshaw. that's nothing. i was in a 3 day one once. i left to go raid, raided, went to bed queued up, got in and it was the same one. repeat the same exercise the next day.
* When you could run 40 players through Stratholme, Scholomance, Blackrock Depths, Blackrock Spire, etc.
'can i drop raid real quick to get quest credit? please?'
* When the sight of a full dungeon 1 set was impressive
i think i had the first tier 1 paladin set on proudmore. i feel old now.
here's a few others:
remember when T2 gear dropped in molten core?
when all paladins were basically some form of holy/ret hybrid and would wtfpwn people with seal of the crusader?
mail would occaisionally take 5 mins to open?
