A new week means it's time for a new edition of
Two Bosses Enter, WoW Insider's series of fantasy deathmatches where we pit two raid bosses against each other – and you get to tell us who emerges victorious. Two bosses will enter our arena, but only one will get to leave! We're going to keep pitting boss against boss until we finally emerge with a single victor. This week we'll be judging a fight between two powerful Outland bosses: Illidan Stormrage, the final boss in the Black Temple, and Kael'thas Sunstrider, the final boss in the Eye of Tempest Keep. Curious about what might happen if these two bosses met up? Keep reading!
Illidan has a wide array of abilities at his disposal to wipe out any opposition. He's capable of heavy melee damage, high fire and shadow damage, and can summon a variety of minions to keep you occupied. Illidan's abilities at the start of the fight are as follows:
- Shear reduces the health of his main target by 60%
- Illidan will occasionally jump into the air and land in a patch of highly damaging blue flame
- Illidan will randomly target players to cast a parasites debuff on, which does shadow damage over time and then summons two parasites to attack the target
- Draw soul does heavy fire damage to targets in front of Illidan and heals Illidan
For phase 2, Illidan offers a different range of ways to kill you:
- Illidan will summon two massive fire elementals, the Flames of Azzinoth
- Every 30 seconds, Illidan will sweep an eye beam across the platform, doing heavy fire damage and leaving a trail of damaging fire behind it
- Illidan shoots fireballs that do splash damage
- Dark Barrage does heavy shadow damage to a random target, though it's rarely cast
For phase 3, Illidan acts nearly the same as phase 1, only with the addition of agonizing flames, a fire spell that does damage on initial impact and damage over time afterwards.
For phase 4 (a quick phase, at 30 seconds long), Illidan will unleash the demon within. He turns into a black demon with powerful abilities, but is unable to move. During this phase, he'll cast:
- Shadow blast, a high damage shadow attack with splash damage
- Flame burst, an AoE fire-based DoT that does splash damage
- Aura of dread does a high amount of shadow damage over time as well as increasing the damage taken by shadow spells (stacks)
Phase 5 is like phase 3, only with the addition of the following:
- Maiev Shadowsong joins the fight -- and though we usually don't consider adds for fights, I'm keeping Maiev in this fight because Illidan is just incredibly powerful. (And Maiev would be hunting him down whether he was in the Black Temple or dueling with Kael'thas outside of Orgrimmar.)
- Illidan can enrage, randomly.
For those of you familiar with the fight, you'll notice something missing -- this is because we aren't considering instant-kill abilities. In a one-on-one encounter, they make the fight predictable and dull. However, if you're still curious for the full details of the fight, check
Bosskillers.
Despite what you may have been lead to believe by repeated viewings of
Azerothian Super Villains, Kael'thas is no pushover. However, for the purposes of this fight he's certainly more so than he is in the game -- in order to make these fights as fair as possible, we try to consider the bosses on their own, without any adds that might be in the room at the start of the fight. This means Kael'thas doesn't get the aid of his advisors, and we skip straight into phase four of the encounter, where you first trade blows with Kael'thas himself. The skills Kael'thas has at his disposal are as follows:
- Mind control, though in a one-on-one fight this would do little but bore the audience
- An arcane explosion (arcane AOE) that disorients anyone hit by it
- Can summon a Pheonix which will hellfire (fire AOE that damages the Pheonix) and spawns an egg on death. If the egg isn't destroyed quickly, another Pheonix will spawn.
- A high-damage fireballs and pyroblasts (fire attacks)
After 50%, Kael'thas will stop using mind control and pyroblast, and start using nether beam (a chain lightning-esque ability), nether vapor (clouds that give a stacking HP-reducing debuff to anyone who enters them), and gravity lapse (which causes everyone to levitate for 30s).
And that's all there is for Kael'thas -- full details of the fight, for the curious, are gone over at
MMO Champion.
Before you vote, remember -- we're trying to consider each of these bosses on approximately even footing. That means we're not just running a spreadsheet of their exact health and precise damage, but instead are considering each bosses' abilities and fighting style. Please presume that each boss has similar health and damage capabilities.

Illidan wins, not because he is the last boss in the game (to present date) but because just has such a wider armory of abilities at his disposal, and can pwn with heavy shadow damage. Also, when he goes Demo-spec, his damage done is extensively more than before, and he randomly enrages at step 5. I've never fought him, or Kael'Thas, but judging from what's here, he has more abilities to wtfpwn Kael'Thas.

Illidan hands down - but what would happen if gravity was activated while Illy was in demon form?? I sense a reset :P Kael would be down before Maiev even joins the fight although I would also say that it would be a close fight but with the first few phases not there it would be easy play for Illidan. And yes I know I have contradicted myself many times there :P

This is an easy one. Illidan simply has much more damage potential than Kael, especially his Shear ability.
potatowedge Sep 5th 2007 7:27PM
I don't care who wins, but if it were a battle of sexy it'd be Kael'Thas all the way.
Sorry about that. I had to.

Well seing as I haven't gotten to a point where I could raid either boss, I'm going by Azeroth SuperVillains representation of the two and say that Kael wins becuase someday he will probably annoy Ilidan to the point of suicide.
Dierle Sep 5th 2007 7:51PM
Illidan wins, it wouldn't even reach the point where Maiev would enter the fight.
1: Illidan has wings, he can fly, this makes Kael's deadly gravity lapse virtually useless against him.
2: Illidan has a wide range of AOE abilities at his disposal to take care of Kael's phoenixes.
3: to fight Illidan, you have to keep moving to stay out of his flames, while casting, one cannot move, therefore Kael's shield would never last long enough against both Illidan's inherent damage potential and the flames on the ground for Kael to pyroblast him. I'm assuming here of course that in a fight considered for style and not mechanics, Illidan would be allowed to give Kael a swift hoof to the gut to interrupt his casting once he had the shield down. and if not, even if the shadow demons he summons aren't allowed to 1 shot Kael, they could freeze him for a moment and interrupt him.
4: Kael is very reliant on spells, and Illidan is a dual wielding boss who attacks very fast, Kael would be hard pressed to cast under the constant barrage of damage.

How about putting two bosses that the majority of WoW raiders has done? I mean Illidan, the last boss of Black Temple.. really.
Tumples Sep 5th 2007 8:00PM
Its Illidan fucking Stormrage, of course he would win.
Sargentd Sep 5th 2007 8:10PM
I read Illidan's Shear move and because of that even if only used once he owns Kael. If you took out that ability I think he would still win with the all the other crap he has up his sleeves.
Zeplar Sep 5th 2007 8:25PM
Shear ought to be out since it deals a % of kael's health, but since it doesn't insta-kill or bring him to 1% I guess it's counted.
Illidan pwns.
Benor Sep 5th 2007 8:55PM
Illidan has more whining experience. By comparison, Kael'thas is a piker.
Illidan wins by inducing Kael to suicide.

I am going to back Kael'thas Sunstrider on this one. Illidan will not have any defences form Sunstriders special attacks, as he will not have the chance to loot the weapons at the end of Stage two. So he will be stunned for 10 seconds each time the Arcane Explosion goes off. It is possible that Illidan will be disorientated while in the Hellfire, and recieving multiple 25k Fireballs. If he is too slow on destroying the Phoenix eggs, he may be swampped.
Keylogger Sep 5th 2007 10:01PM
I'll go Kael'thas, because I'm hip and different like that.
Wildhammer Sep 5th 2007 11:01PM
Illidan's a Highbourne Sorcerer/Demon Hunter of roughly fifteen thousand years of age.... Kael'thas is a bratty Bloodmage Prince of less than half that age....
Safe bet, Illidan.

"You are not prepared!"
Illidan

This is a competition of the biggest/baddest bosses in the game. A boss that the majority of WoWers have killed doesn't sound like that big or bad of a boss...

Gah I still can't quite understand the point of this exercise... From a "fantasy" (i.e. lore) perspective Kael is nowhere close to being in the same league as Illidan freaking STORMRAGE - brother of Malfurion.
So essentially, in this exercise, you are attempting to compare the game mechanics of these 2 bosses -- but then the disclaimer is to make everything THE SAME... so what is the point again? If tmrw Bliz retunes the encounters does that invalidate this fight? lol
At any rate most of us hasn't fought Illidan, so all we have to go with is the lore content. I say Illidan 1 shots Kael. GGNORE
Krishan Sep 6th 2007 3:48AM
Kael can't heal, and even though he is a bitch to kill in-game, against Illidan one shear=
thecapuchin Sep 6th 2007 4:30AM
Illidan. I have to echo previous comments:
"It's Illidan fucking Stormrage."
He's one of the oldest living creatures in Outlands or Azeroth.
Nuff said.
Geoffrey Sep 6th 2007 4:42AM
Kael losses simply becuase a fire mages can't beat rogueS =P (I know he's not a rogue but hey he dual weilds heavy dps and if "demon hunter" really does become a hero class, it seems like the logical step for a rogue and even a hunter to take, you pallies can have your death knights")
