Are you going to use voice chat?
Kachra from Ursin asks a question that I'd like to know the answer to: are you going to use the voice chat feature? And just like the guys who built the Six Million Dollar Man, we have the technology. We can find out. So here's a poll. And hopefully, we can get a good, somewhat scientific reading on the community-- are you going to use the voice chat feature or not?Keep in mind that TS and Vent aren't going anywhere, and as I said in my Voice Chat hands on, it's very likely that a lot of guilds (especially bigger guilds), will keep using those. But my guess is also that a lot of people will use both-- TS in raids, and the builtin voice chat in PuGs or more private groups. So if you're planning to use voice chat at all (even if it's in conjunction with a third party voice program), mark yes below.
And if you don't think you'll ever touch it, either because you're sticking to third party, or you don't want to voice chat, mark no. Who knows-- maybe Blizzard's overestimating demand for the feature in the first place.

i dont think i will
my main computer is in my living room, and i think it would be fairly annoying for my wife. i usually play with the sound very quiet and i havent used TS or Vent at all
i dont raid so i dont need to
when i used to have xbox live, i had a microphone for it... anytime i said anything to someone in the game, my wife was always saying "what?"
heh

Free pre-teen voice chat. That shouldn't cause any problems.
Kek Sep 6th 2007 2:12PM
Nope. Or at least I'll try not to. I'd rather people not hear my hillbilly accent.
PDKM Sep 6th 2007 2:11PM
How can you answer yes or no when you dont even know what it will be like yet? Im in the wait-and-see crowd. If it sucks I wont use it. If it enhances my game experience then I will.

I'll be using it for PUGs only. It should help loads with managing those. But it'll be my guild vent for general chat and raids.

I'm on the fence about this one....I want to see what all that added burden on the system does to my game performance. It's bad enough in the major cities as it is.....

Nope, I've always avoided voice chat, with my stammer and all.
Trunade Sep 6th 2007 2:17PM
Only for pugs. I have my own vent server that we use for the guild with no problems. I don't like that you have to be in a group.
BSChim Sep 6th 2007 2:21PM
Alot of guilds will still use vent for raiding. The voice chat is really only for pugs.
Jamus Sep 6th 2007 2:30PM
I will not be using it. I do not want someone screaming out "FU" while I am sitting next to the spouse or kid.
James Sep 6th 2007 2:28PM
I won't because I play MMOs so obviously I'm an antisocial nerd

I don't know what you'd need to chat with a PUG about that can't be handled with "Kill Skull, Sheep Diamond, Sap Orange" in text.

A lot of people seem concerned with talking over the voice chat, which I understand if you are self conscious of your accent, have a stammer, or want to avoid getting hit on. But it may still be useful! You can always use the excuse that you don't own a mic, but you'll listen in. It can be really useful when you are off-healing to be able to hear the healer say "I've been silenced!" or something like that. The time saved not typing could make a difference in some situations.

No. I hate talking on the phone and only do it when I need to. Add to that, I don't really want to know the true gender or age of the person behind the toon. If I see a male human warlock, I just want to assume that it is a male playing it. The potential of hearing a crackly pubescent voice attached to it is not something I would be looking forward to. WoW is an escape from reality for me, and I have no desire to bring any form of reality into the game.

Assuredly not. Ventrilo is of far superior quality, and I can choose who's in there with me. I only want to hear the voices of my friends and guild-mates, not some guy with a sound-board.
If I were a Vent company, I'd be laughing all the way to the bank though, really. Those who have not tried voicechat will try this, realize what a potentially great idea it was, were it not so badly implemented, and go in search of their own private server instead. I know I'll be working with one of our sponsors to ensure that they maximize on this unique opportunity.

Damn, that girl in the picture is fucking pale. Go get some sun, will ya?
SeiferTim Sep 6th 2007 2:36PM
I don't own a microphone - and I don't plan to buy one any time soon... I just don't see the point in voice chat.
Juneau Sep 6th 2007 2:37PM
@12, sure I'll listen in, I just wont speak.
Scadam Sep 6th 2007 2:40PM
I voted yes. The way I see it:
Pros
- Not having to alt-tab out to fire up Vent
- No need for Vent install, setup, server names, passwords, etc...
- No need to crank up volumes to hear voices over game sounds (it apparently auto-lowers the game sound as needed)
- Can see who is talking! I recognize very few voices in a 25-man raid so I'd love this
Cons
- Quality is not as good as Vent on PTR? Or so I've heard
- With Vent/TS you can keep up chat when someone's WoW client crashes
- Not as easy to hang out in when not using it for instances/raids? Not sure how the voice chat will work but I don't wear my headset unless raiding anyway so I don't care.

I listen, don't care for speaking due to not having a mic and all. And the chick in the picutre... I will "sheep" her "square" any day
