If you use your gnomish world enlarging device, you'll be able to see a caterpillar smoking a hookah at the base.

During the alpha of TBC Zangarmarsh had more then just the ambient rain. Originally there was a ring that was very large and twisted around the entire zone. It was removed during the end of the alpha though and guess they forgot to remove it from one of the many mushrooms the smaller rings were on.
The model itself was called the Zangar fog ring and is still in the MPQ.

Wow, I never noticed that, but after I read this post, I logged on, did my usual round of Skettis quests, and as I was flying to Ogri'la (using the Skyguard flight path) I saw it! Pretty easy to see from the Skyguard flight path; it'll be on your right just as you come in to Zangarmarsh.

I always thought it was supposed to look like the mushroom was supposed to extend above the clouds,
