A lifetime subscription to Azeroth
Tobold has a good post up about lifetime subscriptions to MMORPGs that got me wondering: why hasn't Blizzard ever offered a lifetime subscription to WoW?The obvious answer, of course, is that they think they can make more money by not doing so. In order for a lifetime subscription to be profitable, the player that buys it has to either stop playing before the subscription would have ended, or not be a major drain on the system after their subscription becomes "free." It's a gamble on both sides.
Now, Tobold's reasons for liking his LoTRO lifetime subscription and not jumping on a Hellgate London subscription aren't really applicable to WoW-- HgL is going to be completely different, with no subscription fee required for some players. But would you invest in a lifetime subscription for Blizzard's game? There's little chance they'll offer one now (usually a lifetime subscription is offered at the start of a game's life), but you never know-- if reception to WotLK isn't great, maybe they'll offer it right before the expansion to try and nab players that would quit right afterwards otherwise. By Hellgate's prices, a lifetime subscription to WoW would be $225. Let's go a step further and say that because WoW is so popular, Blizzard would charge $250 for a lifetime subscription to the game, approximately the same price as a year and change paid monthly. Would you take that deal?

I'm sure I'll be playing WoW for more than year (it's been more than two already). It would be a great deal, especially if Blizzard continues rolling out expansions. Sign me up!

^^ I agree.
Where do I sign?

Absolutely. I'm hooked!

Never. You have no idea what the future's going to bring in any game. I thought about doing it with LOTRO because I was tired of WoW and wanted to play something new... and I'm real glad I didn't.
who knows if the Next Big Nerf will be the one that makes you quit the game because you're tired of the "balance changes"?

Not only yes, but h311 yes.

I have a lifetime membership, but I'm special.

Lifetime? No. However I would like to see the longer subscription programs go down in price.

It would kind of suck if you bought a lifetime subscription and then your acct got banned the next month.
In general, I avoid lifetime memberships/subscriptions, because generally companies only offer them because they're having serious cashflow problems. But I'm guessing Bliz is doing all right financially, so if they offered a lifetime subscription I'd be all over it.

Actually there has been a Lifetime Subscription sold, it was up for auction at the 2005 Blizzcon. I spoke to the Blizzard employee running the silent auction at the 2007 Blizzcon, and he said it sold for like $1800 if I recall. I think it ended he said the person would need to play for 15 year actually see savings. Still I'm shocked the person didn't just buy one of the cool paintings like Blizzard had up for sale at the current one.

Sign me up.

If Blizz offered it for 250$ at launch for this deal, I would do it.
Now, not so sure, maybe ...

Usually the only reason that developers would give players lifetime subscriptions is cause..
1)they think the game might not be popular because of the competition (a la LOTRO giving the option because WoW is currently a juggernaut in the MMO space)
2) it could be the last attempt by the developer to get money out of the consumer before the game dies.

i'd totally do it.

In a heartbeat - I've already been playing for 2 years, and as long as the expansions keep coming, I'll keep playing.
Paul Sep 12th 2007 8:22PM
if 8 is correct, does that make 5 special because he paid $1800? i guess special is the right word...

$250 for life?? im there and sos my wife and my son so thats almost $800 they would make off me alone but damn well worth it!!!
Coherent Sep 12th 2007 9:17PM
I would probably buy if it were under $300. I could afford that much in one pay period (just eat cheap for a while) and then I wouldn't have to worry about my subscription lapsing at an inconvenient time because I forgot to renew it.
Lifetime subscriptions ALSO make sense if you plan to reduce the cost of monthly subscriptions at some point (1 or 2 years) in the future.
Then you've made out like a bandit, you have their money, but it isn't worth as much as it was when they bought it. But still, they don't care because they want the peace of mind of knowing they always have a home in Azeroth and beyond.

I wouldn't quit the game over one nerf, that's for sure. I'd take the deal.
Genixx Sep 12th 2007 11:04PM
hell, ive shelled out that much ..and more. for 250..id do it.
slayerboy Sep 12th 2007 11:54PM
I'd do it. I'm pretty sure I'll be playing WoW for a long time as long as expansions keep coming out. One time payment = piece of mind.
I did this with my Sirius Satellite Radio 2 years ago. 3 more years and I'll pretty much "break-even" and I'll be on the winning side of the deal.
Just because they offer it, doesn't mean everyone and all their friends are going to take it. And they could do a limited-time offer for lifetime subscription. Which, would work quite nicely if they offered a WotLK CE pack that had the lifetime subscription. $300 for an expansion and lifetime subby, I'm in!
