BigRedKitty: Gear Up for Karazhan
Each week, Daniel Howell contributes BigRedKitty, a column with strategies, tips and tricks for and about the hunter class sprinkled with a healthy dose of completely improper, sometimes libelous, personal commentary.
Your gear, bluntly, stinks. You thought all that mail gear from those quests was fabulous until someone pointed out it was all for Shaman. You've got Strength, Spell Hit and Crit, chance-on-melee hit procs, and Spirit out the yin-yang. Nice.
What are you gonna do now? Instances? Who's going to run an instance with hunter decked out in blue cloth leggings? PvP? You won't survive ten seconds unless it's due to your opponents laughing so hard they can't get their fingers to smash the Destroy the Incompetent Huntard button.
You're an outcast.
But we can help! One thing you can do is spend some of that gold you've been hoarding. The Auction House is loaded with super-duper bind-on-equip gear that is plenty good enough to get you through the first four bosses of Karazhan. Those guys drop gear that will keep you in line with the rest of your guildmates. But your current clownness isn't going to get an invite, so we've got to clean you up and make you look all sparkly.
Grab your two-handed mace -- why did you even choose that, you know hunters can't even equip them -- and hustle to the nearest Auction House. Let's go shopping.
First things first, your greenie bow is going to go. Valanos' Longbow is the minimum weapon any level 70 hunter should be sporting. The Auction House is usually choked with them. This is a spiffy 66DPS ranged weapon every hunter, pre-Burning Crusade, would've sharded everything they owned to get. All you have to do is dump 100 gold or so and you'll be ready to rock. If you're a level 70 hunter and your ranged weapon isn't the quality of a Valanos, you have no excuse not to grab one immediately.
Are you a gun-hunter? Those engineers have just the thing for you, an Ornate Khorium Rifle. Much more expensive than the Valanos but it's probably one of the Five Best-Looking Guns In The Game. It too is a 66DPS weapon but a lot slower than the Valanos -- 3.10 attack speed versus 2.80. You probably won't find an OKR on the Auction House as the cost to build one will make most engineers blink. Not every engineer will be able to make one, so be prepared to pay extra for the privilege of owning one.
And don't forget your scope.
Let's mosey over to the two-handed axe aisle and pick out a Crystalforged War Axe to replace your unequipable mace. These axes are always on the Auction House and you should be able to grab one cheaply. If you're a Marksman spec, you'll ask your guild enchanter to put a Savagery enchant on it. Beastmaster or Survivalists should ask nicely for the +35 agility enchant. That's it, you're done. The two most important and hardest to upgrade pieces of equipment you need to do Karazhan are now perfectly adequate for the task.
The Felstaker three-piece set of armor is ubiquitous on the Auction House. Since leatherworkers make the Felstalker Bracers as part of their leveling path, there is almost always a Felstalker Bracer available. Your goal is to not just buy one, but to contact the manufacturer and let him know that you want to purchase the Felstalker Belt and Felstalker Breastplate. These aren't normally manufactured for the Auction House as they require more mats than the bracers yet only yield the same single-point of leatherworking-leveling. The same materials are need for the belt and the chest piece, just in greater quantities. You can farm these materials or just buy them off the Auction House. The three-piece set bonus is +20 to your Hit rating and that's the kind of attribute you'll want for Karazhan.
There are other belts and chest pieces you can get instead of the crafted ones, like the Girdle of Gale Force and the Breastplate of Rapid Striking. If these are available and decently priced, go for them without hesitation.
OK, you've acquired your three-piece Felstalker set and are looking darn-tootin' pretty. What's next? Leggings. Scales of the Beast is a world drop and one makes its way onto the Auction House all the time. Be on the lookout for a decently-priced one. Yes, some sad people try to charge 10x more the going rate should be, so don't be a sap and pay way too much.
If you're a Beastmaster hunter and happen to see a Leggings of Beast Mastery listed, you won't be wrong if you choose to grab them. They're not the strongest epic you'll ever see, but they are an epic, they're good, and raid leaders love to count them as proof you know what you're doing. Also, they are supposedly getting another buff in the next patch. They may be even better in a week or so.
For our hands we have to talk about the Swiftsteel Gloves. These are blacksmith-made and since our experience with this profession is nil, we can't tell you how blacksmiths feel about making them. We've never seen a pair on the Auction House, so we'd have to guess they are not part of the traditional blacksmithing-leveling guides. If you can get a pair from a blacksmith in your guild, they're OK to have made.
We're going to go one better, though, and tell you about the Crystalhide Handwraps. These little bundles of joy pop up while while doing demon-banishing quests in the Blade's Edge Mountains and find their way to the Auction House frequently. If you've got a greenie pair of gauntlets and these epic gloves appear during your buying frenzy, feel free to splurge.
Shoulders are a pain. There's only one rare bind-on-equip, mail-armor shoulder and that's the Pauldrons of Surging Mana. We would like to nominate this as the 2007 Most Cursed Piece of Mail Gear Ever. They are always on the Auction House. They taunt and tease and eventually some hunter breaks down and slaps them on. They are not ours; please let them be. Nobody crafts shoulders. There are no shoulder world-drops. There are no vendors outside of PvP who sell hunter-shoulders. You're going to either have to do a quest or PvP or -- gulp -- go Leather.Since the Auction House is out for this category and we're avoiding instances as a source for gear, let's try the a faction reward and see what we find. If you reach revered with the Kuranai you are eligible to purchase the Blackened Leather Spaulders. Of course, Horde can reach revered with the Mag'har for their Talbuk Hide Spaulders. Yes, this is leather gear but it's pretty nice leather gear. We don't advocate you pretending to be a rogue and outfitting yourself in leather, but for this category and our requirements for obtaining gear, it's acceptable. These will get your through the Opera event in Karazhan where you will eventually get your Beastmaw Pauldrons and no longer have to worry about being shunned by the ignorant.
For your back, the ubiquitous Cloak of the Craft makes its appearance. It is frequently extremely overpriced on the Auction House because it's the major BoE DPS-cloak and many people greatly desire it. Accept that you'll have to pay too much, grumble and complain if it helps, but you'll get over it.
In the rings section, we find the Truestrike Ring. This epic we're bringing up to tell you to Just Say No. Even more overpriced than that cloak, when you see it on the Auction House you'll wonder just exactly what was it the seller was smoking when he was typing out the buyout price. Even if you've got crud for rings and money burning a hole in your bags, don't pay the typical 1100 gold asking-price for it. Try to land yourself a Pathfinder's Band and save a ton.
Did you know there is a hunter-trinket that is sometimes lurking on the Auction House? The Badge of Tenacity is the single most disgustingly overpriced piece of gear you'll ever see. It's also the only rare bind-on-equip trinket, outside of the Riding Crop, that any non-engineer can use. If all you have is a Carrot on a Stick and need something to get your guild master to let you run Karazhan, the Badge of Tenacity will fit the bill, but oh what a bill it'll be.
Our shopping trip is over. Grab your bags, head home, try everything on. How do you look? Pretty nice, if we do say so ourselves. You're certainly not going to solo Gruul today but you can make your first appearance outside of Karazhan without being embarrassed.
Now go have fun and start upgrading some of that gear with phat purple loot.
Daniel Howell continues his quest to eliminate Shammy Gear from the Auction House as the hunter-pet duo extraordinaire known to lore as BigRedKitty. More of his theorycrafting and slanderous belittling of the lesser classes can be found at bigredkitty.blogspot.com.

Another good article from BRK, I just pray none of my guildies post a pic of my hunter back when he was wearing the Pauldrons of Surging Mana. ;-)

OK, why does no hunter try to stack spirit. If you stacked as much spirit as people do intelligence, you would never beg for mana. At least some spirit would be very useful. None of this gear had spirit on it, Stamina and Agility and Intelligence. I like all this gear, and I am sure it has nothing to do with the author that this gear doesn't have spirit on it. But when I gather this gear I am going to try to stack nothing but spirit and mana regen and AP and crit%.
To flesh out my comment on spirit more. Hunters regen mana when they are not casting. Virtually all hunter spells are instant cast, no cast time, so basically they are constantly regenerating mana. That means if you can stack enough spirit to regenerating all your mana in say 3 minutes, you will never run out of mana. It takes about 2-3 minutes of HARD fighting against PvP opponents to run completely out of mana. "Hard fighting" would include spamming: laying down traps, constantly concussion shots, all instant shots (arcane, multi-shot), mend pet, wing clip, etc.
Also, another word of advice for hunters for OVERALL dps and mana conservation:
Be BM Specced, the extra damage you gain from being a marksman will never make up for all the damage you lose from not being BM. It's about like this: Your pet gains around 380% damage from being BM specced. I don't know what kind of damage increase MM hunters consistently see in Long-term raid settings. But let's make a quick analogy to "over-simplify" the situation there. Let's say that MM increased the hunter's dps by 200% while he had mana, but he runs out of mana, no more FD to drink, so he now does very gimped dps for 5 minutes while he regens.
OK, so now some advice on how to micro-manage your pet, keep up on dps, and micro-manage your mana. (Not by all means comprehensive, but some nice tips nonetheless)
Mend pet is a very mana efficient skill. In fact, any healer's base healing spell is no where near as mana efficient as this ~5 health to 1 mana point. It takes some decent healing gear before a healer gets this kind of efficiency (most, if not all healers have gear that gives them much better efficiencg, at least at l70). So, hunters should DEFINITELY keep a mend pet up on their pet.
OK, for mana conservation, this is a double whammy. Serpent Sting is a DoT that hunters have that does twice the damage that arcane shot does per mana point. Or in other words, if a hunter is forced with the choice, only enough mana for one or the other (but not both), then choose Serpent Sting. In the long run (long run is 15 seconds) it is much better damage. Another thing, if there are 3 mobs in close formation all being tanked, use multi-shot. This is an expensive spell, but the damage is multiplicative. If the spell costs 275 mana and does 200 damage to each target, hitting one target withi this spell is not very mana efficient, 2 targets is somewhat decent, but 3 targest has you doing 600 damage for the paltry cost of 275 mana, very efficient spell indeed. So, once again, if there are 3 mobs bunched up that you can use this on, a hunter who is managing his mana, should choose not to use arcane shot, but use serpent sting and multi-shot. There is no way to increase the mana efficiency of arcane shot by using it another way. (Since all raiding hunters DO have to manage mana in long fights, these should be major considerations for them. )
Anyways, these are things to consider. If you can never run out of mana or last 5 minutes longer than the rest of the hunters by either stacking spirit or mana regeneration or by mana conservation, than you will do vastly more damage than your counterparts. Also, different strategies for different situations are in order. Mentally keep track of how long you can last dps'ing, and use this information to control how hard you dps (whether you use arcane shot along with your multi-shot and serpent sting, etc).
Oh yeah, and one more thing, I understand there are a decent amount of survivalist hunters, and I am not going to waste my breath decrying them. I only open my mouth about them when they deign to say that they are the better spec or (OMG) best spec for a hunter. This is so patently untrue. I cannot imagine one thing a hunter would do or participate in regualrly where being full SV would be of any benefit to themselves or others for the purpose of killing people (YES, and not just surviving). It's kind of like the prot tree for warriors, they are almost only good at tanking. PvE soloing is going to suck for them, unlike a paladin that can just pull 3-4 mobs at a time and burn them down with ret aura, holy shield, etc. A hunter is not going to be asked to tank, so why be a survival CC hunter who will do little damage and who's pet will likewise do very little damage. A BM hunter has plenty of CC too, plus pet damage, plus put a few points in another tree and you can boost your own damage as well.
Anyways, that's my rant for the day. Hope you enjoy.

This dreamstalker guy needs to get a clue. Spirit on hunter gear although isn't useless, isn't nessary at all. Yes, it'll regen your mana but the reason hunter gear lacks spirit most of the time is because we don't need it. The more intellect we have the more mana regen we get from aspect of the viper. Yes, you'll loose a bit of dps from not having aspect of the hawk on at all times, but you'll loose even more by stacking spirit instead of other stats.
Aspect of the Viper works like this.. It's a buff that will give you mana back every 5 seconds. The amount of mana you get back depends on how much intellect you have and the mana percentage you have left. More intel = more MP5. As your mana goes down from using your shots, you gain even more MP5 because your mana is lower.
I'll agree that BM gives more DPS though, can't be argued (ok it can be but it wont be by me.) But once again this guy proves himself clueless. Every raid should have one, no more, just one survival hunter because it DOES benifit yourself and others. In raids CC from hunters is hardly needed, that point of being survival shouldn't be touched by putting talents into. If you get the Expose Weakness talent (the whole reason for going survival hunter as a raid spec) it's hardly useless, infact, it's the best hunter talent for a raid. "Your ranged criticals have a 100% chance to apply an Expose Weakness effect on the target. Expose Weakness increases the attack power of all attackers ageinst the target by 25% of your total Agility for 7 sec." Unbuffed I have 776 agility and 36.83% crit chance, can easily crit every 7 seconds. Thats 194 extra attack power I'm giving everyone in the raid, unbuffed add my 5/5 Imporved Hunters Mark is another 440 attack power to all physical attacks for a total of 634 extra attack power for everyone in the raid... unbuffed. Yeah, sure survival hunter is useless.. you tell me that next time you're in a party with one and you start breaking your damage records ;). Oh, and both Expose Weakness and Improved Hunters Mark increase the dps of you AND your pet. You can't call survival useless because it's not. BM is for all out DPS and farming these days, MM for pvp and Survival is a support spec, and a damn good one at that.
No extra spirit or mana regen on my gear, apsect of the viper and I don't run out of mana on long boss fights in TK and ZA doing 900-1000dps in T4+ gear. Spec: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=cZVE0RVZIhz0xfMhVhG

The +hit bonus on Felstalker requires 350 Leatherworking I believe.
Be warned, any feral druid that sees you wearing the Badge of Tenacity will attempt to claw it from your cold dead body. The Agi is great for hunters, but with the Armor as well it really is THE ultimate druid tanking trinket.
The Crystalforged Trinket from Ogri'la Reverved Rep might also be an option.
Tridus Sep 12th 2007 3:13PM
The Felstalker set bonus requires Leatherworking to get. So, if you're buying these off the AH, you probably won't be getting the set bonus.
Erica Olson Sep 12th 2007 3:16PM
"The three-piece set bonus is +20 to your Hit rating and that's the kind of attribute you'll want for Karazhan."
Well and good to say but that's only if you've got 350 leatherworking. If you're a leatherworker, you can make them yourself and don't need to buy off the AH.
Corrodias Sep 12th 2007 3:17PM
Ah, good old Badge of Tenacity. I strongly recommend doing Hellfire Penninsula and Zangarmarsh quests, though, as you can pick up some perfectly servicable hutner trinkets there which don't require blowing 1600g on. (these are off the top of my head, out of memory) Core of Ar'kelos, Ancent Draenei War Tablet, something with hit rating...
Poxus Sep 12th 2007 3:20PM
As always. good tips for the rising Hunter nation Good Job

If people can't gear themselves up to this level within their first week or two of hitting 70 *without help* then they don't deserve to play the class. They don't need advice.
Anyone that needed this advice for the right gear to buy, isn't going to be worth grouping with even after they get this gear you suggested.
Razhlok Sep 12th 2007 3:29PM
Great more advice on how scrubs can be slightly less scruby and hunardly. *sigh* Just what we need.
I'm reminded of the episode of the Simpsons where Homer and Marge are forced to attend parenting classes and the teacher says: "Garbage goes in the garbage can people. I can't stress that enough". Marge slumps in her seat mumbling, "this is so embarrassing". Homer, sitting upright and studious, taking notes, donning his "smart glasses" says, "Hmm.. garbage goes in the garbage can. Makes sense."

WTF? Are you serious? That is the single best druid tanking trinket in the game. Over 1500 armor in bear form (almost 1700 with talents). I paid 3k gold for mine and it was money well spent. If you can't recognize a tanking trinket then you really need to stop spreading misinformation.
Nyttyn Nov 28th 2007 6:40PM
o_o you payd 3k for a trinket?
/cry
Cody Sep 12th 2007 3:51PM
Man, I would love to group with this guy ^^... I bet it's lots of fun...
Ahoni Sep 12th 2007 3:51PM
@9
Why would he be talking about a tanking trinket? He's talking about a hunter trinket, and the "Use: Increases agility by 150 for 20 sec" would be quite spiffy for a hunter. But he is right, it is outrageously overpriced for a hunter trinket. There are much better things available.
Cody Sep 12th 2007 3:53PM
Sry, that was meant for #6...
Chad Sep 12th 2007 4:08PM
If running kara meant grouping with #6, I'd just stick to instances.
The Cannabis Connoisseur Sep 12th 2007 4:19PM
I disagree with the Truestrike Ring comment. It's a great ring and I picked one up for 350g about 2 months ago. (I'm insanely lucky, I know) I would recommend getting one if you could cop it for 400g or under but I wouldn't recommend paying more than that unless you're Oprah-rich. If you don't want to shell out the gold you can always get the PvP ring which is also pretty damn spiffy.
Oh and yes that trinket is WAY overpriced.
BadMage Sep 12th 2007 4:22PM
Bladefist's Breadth, Ancient Draenei War Talisman, Core of Ar'kelos, Ogre Mauler's Badge, Terrokar Tablet of Precision... All EASILY obtained trinkets that have no wasted stats for hunters. Why would you mention Badge of Tenacity when those are equal or better for a hunter, easier to obtain and more clearly designed for hunters than the Badge of Tenacity?
