Blizzard disbands extreme erotic roleplaying guild
I've been sidestepping writing about this issue for some time, since it's bound to generate some controversy here and I hate bringing publicity to bad people. But as the topic keeps popping up again and again, particularly on roleplaying servers, it might be time to bring it out into the open.
An erotic roleplaying guild that now spans two realms has been accused of defending pedophiles and engaging in extreme sexual situations without any way to verify that their members are above the age of 18. While the guild in question says it has been reported many times and is not violating policy, and that minors joining an ERP guild are being poorly parented, Blizzard has forcibly disbanded the guild -- only to have it reform under a new name. There might be some disturbing content following the cut, so click at your own risk.
Abhorrent Taboo was mainly a Hordeside RP guild on Ravenholdt, but recently expanded to an Alliance auxillary on Blackwater Raiders. The guild leader posted a somewhat hostile "welcome message" on the BWR forums: "Role-playing is legal. Even if you are role-playing something that would be considered deplorable and highly illegal IRL, it's still just role-playing and isn't subject to any form of disciplinary action. Negative publicity is still publicity. Make a Digg or website about how sick we are. Report us to PervertedJustice. All it does is bring in more members. In fact, the Digg the guy on Ravenholdt made about us was so effective, several people signed up for WoW just to be in our guild. The bottom line is: We're allowed to do what we do on any server we please and no one can do anything about it."
Now, most RP servers are okay with ERP, if a little squicked out by it -- serious roleplayers tend not to like being thought of as cyberers. But AT has a history. As reported by TenTonHammer and then Dugg, AT's leader has talked about pedophilia in a positive way in guild chat. The exact quote is "I want to defend us, but I also want to defend the pedosexual community." The guild leader notes that she was talking about pedophiles who don't actually molest children and that she hates kids herself.
After AT opened their BWR auxillary, a 25-page thread sprung up and was deleted about AT's intentions. AT's recruitment policy, which was reposted onto the BWR forums from elsewhere, stated: "NOTE: Be advised that we frequently ERP in guild chat and often engage in even potentially offensive kinks such as (Extreme) Ageplay, Bestiality, Child Birth, [something that is censored by the WoW forums so I can't tell what it is], Watersports, or any other kink those playing may wish to explore. If you are easily offended or upset by others using kinks you may not personally enjoy, this is not the guild for you. Furthermore, we are a guild based on freedom of love and sex. Monogamy of any kind runs counter to this, and so, all sexually exclusive relationships are prohibited." They add that officers should enjoy ageplay and bestiality. There have also been insinuations, denied by the guild leader, that AT is purposefully lax in checking up on the ages of applicants, and a poster from Ravenholdt says that the guild solicits new players in chat channels without informing them of the purpose of the guild.
As a result, there have been several posts in the Customer Service and Suggestions forums asking that Blizzard do something about extreme ERP. Basically, the opponents say that since Blizzard lets minors in the game, they are responsible for protecting them from unsafe environments, and that AT is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Supporters, or at least non-opponents, say that AT is only engaging in fantasies, that ERP doesn't actually hurt people, and that it's close to impossible to keep minors from joining a guild if they really, really want to.
It looks like Blizzard has come down on the side of the opponents, as Abhorrent Taboo has been forcibly gdisbanded. "This matter is not one Blizzard takes lightly in any way, shape or form, and we do not wish to have this topic continue circulation," wrote Blizzard employee Verrith. " ... Let it finally be said that we appreciate those of you who brought this particular issue to our attention and that we will continue to follow up with this matter in the future to ensure the safety of all parties concerned." However, the members have reformed as Vile Anathema.
I'm torn on what side of the fence to fall on about Blizzard's actions. I'm highly creeped out by "ageplay" in a video game where it's impossible to verify actual age, and the guild leader's posts do seem like they're actively seeking out controversy. But fantasy isn't reality, and I'm not entirely comfortable about the precedent this sets. What do you think about this situation?

@18 This isn't your WoW, this is a blog comment board.
Seems like these days frigging e-atheists don't even know where they're posting their blinkered twaddle.

RPing peadophillia is still peadophillia. most people dont realise that alot of crimes dont actually require an act to be commited.
assault isnt when you hit someone, its when someone thinks your going to hit them. they are crimes that only require a "mens rea" basically the mental part of a crime.
things like conspiricy to murder etc all fall under this umbrella. so id say that this is conspiricy to commit sexual acts with minors and should be punishable by jail time.
if you rp a peadophille and just so happen to rp "it" with a person under 16 then it IS PEADOPHILLIA.
people get to hung up on rights, "i have the right to do what i want" no, no you dont. you have a few basic rights that cover your welbeing and your freedom, but to say you have the right to activly engage in illegal activities is non-sence, we all know wow isnt real, but its real enough.
send the acount details of teh offenders to the sherifs office, police dept, fbi, mi6.
i dont care who just get them sick fucks away from our kids.

Hmm, I'm not sure if it is illegal to RP sexual fantasies that would be considered illegal if actually carried out in real life. If that were true, than anyone writing erotica or talking erotica that would otherwise be considered illegal is also at fault. That would violate freedom of speech, since nothing inheritantly "real" is taking place.
Granted, everything in the game belongs to Blizzard and they do have the last word. However, people are way to sensitive and feel the need to complain about everything. If Blizzard insists on having a game which mixes people of all ages, then you will see problems. Blizzard cannot filter every "mature" aspect of the game and interaction in order to protect the young players.

"Keep your God outta my WoW please."
Keep your assumptions outta my WoW please. It's a phrase, like "Heaven help us or whatever." I'm not religious, I don't attend church so please keep your personal beef about those who would shove their religion down your throat to yourself.
You will carefully note I made otherwise no religious commentary--again, it's a colloquialism. That it offends you says more about you than anything I suppose.
My lack of religion does not blind me to the fact that what that guild (and Lilith specifically) was doing or *promoting* was clearly wrong. Any waffling on that, or waffling about "how to feel about this" is evidence of an internal problem that needs to be resolved. And heaven help us if people do not resolve their confusion about the fact that pedophilia is injurious to children and society.

@17 - the problem is the slippery slope idea when it comes to ERP. If the two handlers or muns or whatever are over 18, then whatever they decide to dream up in a fake realm using fake characters is legal, no matter how distasteful I (or you, or anyone) may find it.
Who draws the line? Who decides the punishment for crossing the line? Where do you draw the line? International laws vary wildly, whose laws do you use?
It's a messy, complicated issue. Blizzard had to do something to act like they were protecting children, but there's not much they can do in reality.

This is not about how much a guild "screens" members or how blizzard could help guilds "screen" members at all.
This is not about whether this action spills over into public channels.
This is about Blizzards "Private Property" and enforcing their TOU/EULA on their "private servers".
Or did some of you really think you have some "right to privacy" in chats on blizzard private servers? or any sort of "freedom of speech" on Blizzards private servers?
Sorry, your payment to blizzard doesn't extend you any rights past what the contract spells out.
If the actions of these guilds is against the TOU/EULA, or the spirit of the TOU/EULA, then the guilds need to leave WoW.
Nuff said

As been said a few times: Blizzard's servers, Blizzard's rules. They can do what they want when they want how they want. The only rights anyone has in this game and on these servers are the ones that Blizzard gives them.
End of story.

How do you have a functional raid with 25 druids in Bear, Cat, and Oomkin form?
kellzea Sep 17th 2007 11:59AM
to a previous comentor. if you think peadophillia is protected by freedom of speach, your having a laugh. go into the street right now and shout it. lets see how quick your "freedom" disapears in a blaze of death and gunfire.
Dave Sep 17th 2007 12:00PM
oh please.
I don't need to hear that some "guild" likes to imagine they're fucking a 14 year old tauren male in bear form. I just don't. Nobody cares.
If they'd shut up and just NOT TELL ANYONE nobody would care. Instead they have to be astounding troll and brag to the world HEY WE CAN TALK ABOUT HUMPING 12-YEAR OLDS and you can't stop us FREEDOM OF SPEECH blah blah blah blah blah and they just don't shut up and stay quiet. That stupid diatribe is either the best WoW troll ever (as is the entire guild and guild concept) or these people are just stupid.
If you're that uncreative that you have to explicitly say ON THE REALM FORUM what you're going to be doing in chat, without having an offer for people to just talk to you privately to explain what your guild is all about (which clearly doesn't seem to be actually playing the game I guess) then you deserve to get banned.
Instead, I'm just going to consider this a very well played troll by a handful of bored people.

#25 and #26 are spot on. The people involved should accept that these kind of activities are not welcome and move on. Bye bye!
andrea Sep 17th 2007 12:06PM
They had it coming and it's well deservered. This wasn't at all something they kept to themselves. They constantly had drama threads going on the forums, and frequently engaged others with this in general chat, and randomly.
And no, they didn't raid. They rarely left silvermoon, and liked to shun my awesome dancing moonkin with a /spit. Good riddance..I suposse, but they are still around sadly.

fantasy is great, and people should be allow to explore what they want. and normally I will defend that
but here, the guild name was already questionable , and it's not simply about roleplaying a character in a fantasy world with some love or sexual interest but really to be the most violent and polemical guild ever. they wanted that. they openly promoted some disturbing ways, with no concerns about young players.
it's the heart of the problem.
I'm sure noone would be concerned, for example, by a guild of officially drag queen (paladins in dress :) ) in Wow if they didn't promote a political/moral message forcibly.
I want to emphasize here you are not with your typical "we have an adult roleplaying setup".
but when a guild is doing everything they can to create polemics, to offend or to be a problem , blizzard is forced to do something.
about pedophilia speechs, of course blizzard have to act. It's not simply fantasy or roleplaying. but people acting to speak about it even if there are children in the guild or whatever.
you can't know the age of others players, so you do not speak about heavy contents, or ambiguous things. it's not about Freedom here, it's about respect for children and people.
and more : do not promote that publicly ! it's no more roleplaying here, it's a "political" message told on public forums. of you course you have to assume.
-
to summarise : roleplaying is great, sexual stories between adults is great if it's your thing, but World of Warcraft is NOT a space of total liberty without concerns to others peoples and we have to remember the game is for Twelve and Above ! If your guild only exists in the goal to stretch the rules and common freedom we share, do not be surprised when blizzard is forced to act.
---
please, let God out. I have no need to call my own god upon you to know when someone is doing everything he/she can to annoy others.
Sylythn Sep 17th 2007 12:06PM
I was starting to wonder where the trolls were - just took em a while to wake up today. :)
Anyway, I had a good chuckle to myself as I'm reminded of this line of marketing-speak that's on every box: "Game experience may change during online play."
Bet the marketers weren't thinking this far when they came up with that line. :)
Charmed Sep 17th 2007 12:07PM
Why don't they just play Sims? Personally, I think Blizzard should ban every single one of them for violations of the TOS. After reviewing chat logs of course.

>posting their blinkered twaddle.
this story has nothing to do with Buddha and the 4 noble truths. please. neither with dinosaur.
it's about legality, respects of children and the fact World of Warcraft is not the place to do EVERYTHING without concerns about OTHERS !
it's SIMPLE !
Dahkeus Sep 18th 2007 9:28AM
If they put Blizzard in legal jeopardy, shut them down. The last thing WoW players need is to have WoW affected by any repercussions Blizzard might face from a lawsuit just because some radical RPers care only about themselves and their own fetishes.
If there is a legal way to allow them to do what they want to do, fine, but they must be held responsible for any responsibilities that come with it, such as age verification. If they cannot uphold said responsibilities, they should not be given the right to continue in their actions.

@35 - Wow you can read! Great! Now maybe read the comment I was referring to and understand why I made that remark in the first place.
