Blue notes for Rogues
Rogues got a good bit of blue response on the forums today. First, player Snlper of Ysondre server wanted to know why Vanish and Blind still required reagents. The Fadeleaf component to make Blinding Powder is particularly annoying to her as it has to be gathered with Herbalism, pickpocketed or bought at inflated price on the Auction House. Community Manager Drysc thought the complaint holds merit and will hopefully bring it to the attention of the devs.Next, player Istarian of Lightninghoof suggested a new talent/skill that shifts some unused combo points to the next target when the current target dies before the rogue can pull off a finishing move. This is how he worded it:
Redirect Focus
Passive
When your target dies with 3/4/5 combo points on it, your next attacked hostile target within 15 seconds gains 1/2/3 of those combo points. (This effect will only be active if you have at least 3 combo points on your target).
CM Drysc responded that the dev team has considered ways to deal with unused combo points, but hasn't decided on anything yet.
Finally, this last bit of blue lovin' is a clarification on the melee haste nerf and the impact on casters. Drysc explained that haste and attack power were of similar value to melee players at their base level, but +haste was scaling much faster than +attack power when a player loaded up on it through equipment. Blizzard is bringing down the benefit of +haste for all classes. But then they noticed it impacted casters too much and now they are bringing back up (all the way? a little bit? just for casters? that wasn't clear.)

Isn't combo point management part of being a rogue? To me it's just like Energy, Rage, and Mana management. You don't use more than you need.

Dear Blizzard,
Where is the patch?

Oh yeah, 'cause grinding is sooo hard with a rogue. As compared to say, the Holy priest/pally or resto druid/shammy

@4 Yes, CP managment is part of playing a rogue, but let's say you build up 3 CP and want to hit Slice and Dice before the mob dies because it's about to run out and you want it up for the next mob you're gonna target. If you're half a second too late and/or the server doesn't register that you hit SnD before the mob died, then you don't get the SnD buff AND you lose the 3 CP you just spent 120 or 180 energy to generate. That doesn't happen to a mage with his mana and keep him from casting another frostbolt. That doesn't happen to a warrior with his rage and keep him from popping Rampage.
I'm not trying to whine, honestly. I'm just trying to point out the fundamental difference that makes rogue/cat druid damage output and managment more complex than most people think.

@5 This isn't a concern about rogue grinding speed. I can grind on my resto shaman if I want, but that's not the point of the complaint. This is a concern centered around rogue PvP and raid dps efficiency. Lost combo points are essentially wasted energy and, therefore, a loss of dps.

Sorry, but rogues receive no sympathy from me in PVP.

I love my rogue for one...been happy with Blizz's treatment of rogues from the very beginning.
Combo points transfering? Yeah sounds nice but not at all necessary.
The haste nerf is a bummer but it was honestly OP for rogues, as enough haste could let u trigger double mongoose over and over again. So i'm ok with it. BUT I would love it if they just added a tiny bit more +haste on the low-end 70 items. The nerf is to address too much haste achieved with lots of high-end haste gear from what I understand. But it will hurt new 70s more than it should IMO. But either way, rogues are still awesome. It was a joy to lvl to 60, then to 70 and to raid at the 60 and 70 lvl. PvP is awesome too.

Yeah, on the first test-realm build, with my pre-made rogue in full tier 6, the full haste effect was stupid fast - I raided SSC with some other pre-mades, and rogues were so much higher than everyone else on the damage meters it wasn't funny. Having double Mongoose procs up 75-80% of the time is phenomenal.
Rogues are, in general, a fun class - whining about being only awesome when you were godly will get you very little respect from the rest of the community - especially considering most of them have nightmares about that zoom/crunch noise that indicates unstealth/kidney shot.
Vestras Sep 18th 2007 7:27AM
Ok, I don't know about the rest of you, but where in the world do you find +haste gear? I've been all over endgame, and I don't recall seeing a single piece with any stat like that on it...unless they just call it haste and it is actually some other mechanic...

i like the combo point transfer idea...
rogues are pretty much ninjas - and when i think ninja i think jumping from one enemy to the next in one giant combo... jackie chan style

@6: "That doesn't happen to a mage with his mana and keep him from casting another frostbolt. "
It actually does. Consider how many times I was spinning up a mana-intensive spell with my mage or lock, letting go (thus expending the mana), only to have the melee player crit and kill before my spell registers on the target. All that mana is gone and it isn't coming back (save for the lock where I can life-tap to get some off the health bar).
Why should rogues be allowed to collect back on wasted expenditures while other classes not? If the combos are to be carried over, then the points should stack on the rogue, not the target. If Bliz wants to make that change it is their option, I guess, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.
Dabura Sep 18th 2007 10:55AM
@7 I'm sorry, but rogues are absolutely ok in Pve and Pvp, so they dont need any buffs atm, even though I'm a mage and should say "Oh nerf rogues" QQ etc.. I atcually think they are one of the only completely balanced class
Hank Sep 18th 2007 11:20AM
My only complaint about blind/vanish regents is that when they 'increased significantly' the amount of blinding powder found in lockboxes through pickpocket, there was a signifcant decrease in flash powder, to the point where I am now having to buy flash powder, and sell off 40 or more blinding powder.
Malyfactian Sep 18th 2007 12:24PM
I've never harvested or paid for any fadeleaf, and I have over 40 blinding powders in my arsenal right now. How did I do that? Pickpocketing. Humanoid mobs carry around junkboxes packed with handy rogue reagents. Any rogue who whines about not getting enough blinding reagents obviously has never pickpocketed.
I agree with some of the above posters, l2p. Rogue class is perfect as it is, as long as you know how to skillfully use all the abilities.
stapleboy Sep 18th 2007 11:45AM
I agree that combo point management is part of playing a rogue. Could do without the Blind reagent, or make it purchasable from vendors like Flash Powder.
If I were going to complain - and I think I will! - it would be about the way pets and minions respond to stealth. I need to check the PTR notes... has Blizz said anything lately about pets charging you from a mile away, even if you're out of combat and go into stealth after they've been sent at you? What about treants and water elementals staying in your face right through Vanish? Boy those things drive me crazy.
