Should Oceanic realms get their own progression?
MMO Champion's got the tip on the Oceanic first kill of Illidan by a guild called Not Steamboat on Aman'thul. I'd actually call Archimonde the last boss in the game right now, although for the current Burning Crusade storyline, Bou is right-- Illidan is it, at least until the Sunwell. But the kill brings up another interesting point with regards to Oceanic players. While they're often grouped with the US servers (unlike the EU or Asian servers, Oceanic and US servers are in the same place and subject to the same maintenance), are Oceanic servers that different that we should acknowledge a kill like this? This isn't like in China, where Burning Crusade just released. These Oceanic players have had access to Illidan just as long as an EU guild like Nihilum has. Why should we care if they kill Illidan? Sure, it's an accomplishment (just like every boss kill is, no matter how small or big), but is there even such a thing as "Oceanic first"?
Sanctus emailed Boubouille to argue just that and say that Oceanic servers should be considered separate, in terms of progression, from US and EU servers. He says that Oceanic players have to deal with the aforementioned maintenance schedule problems, as well as huge lag. So what do you think? If this issue of Oceanic progression as compared to the rest of the world hadn't come up, I wouldn't have mentioned this Illidan kill at all-- in my opinion, there is no such thing as "Oceanic first," because Oceanic players play on, more or less, the same realms that US players do. So should Oceanic realms be considered separately when comparing guild progression? Or should they be held to the same schedule and timeline for "first kills" as the rest of us?

I'm still amazed they're running Oceanic servers out of North America...why in the world haven't they set up a SE Asia-style system in Australia or NZ? At the very least I'd think they would want to move the Oceanic servers over to the Asian group.

Hell no, I play on the same realm as NSB and there's no way I'd be claiming any kinda of special circumstances victory if my guild downed Illidan before them, It's lame, they got the 113th kill of illidan in the world, big whoop. Even if you want to factor in maintainence that could only realistically lift them to what? 100th? still not impressive. +200ms ping does not account for 99 guilds beating you to the end.

I dare you to go up to a girl at a bar tonight and pose this question to her. Then blog about the results here tomorrow so that I can read a blog of yours that actually mildly interests me.
Cliff Notes: Who cares?

Who cares?

Granted it was a bit further away than Oceanic, but when I was in Hong Kong there were some nights when I had 7-14 seconds of lag on US servers. I highly doubt they're only fighting with 200ms.

Hey swift-- I just read your comment, and so I put the question to the girl I was talking to at the time, and she said "i thought everyone was on the same one. kinda weird." So there you go.
Meanwhile, more posts, from me and the other writers, are on the way.

How big was this girl, Mike?

So they want oceanic-labelled realms treated differently, what about us poor oceanic guilds on US realms? Mine I guess would be a perfect example, in the realm list mine (Proudmoore) is a US realm and my guild name? Oceania. We're Australian/NZ players predominantly with a few Singaporeans and Americans thrown in.
Sure, we're not exactly competing progression wise, but we should be counted as Oceanic.

Remember when Nihilum got the world first... many people were complaining then they 'cheated' and had fought through BT on the PTRs and therefore had not 'earned' it.
Now, it's "hey these guys got a region first but their servers are in the US so is it 'really' a region first?"
You answered your own question...
"...Oceanic first kill of Illidan by a guild called Not Steamboat on Aman'thul."
We may have our servers physically co-located with the US ones... we may have little yankies telling us to get of their servers 'czoz we're increasing their lag to 50 (most of my guild considers a 250-300ms lag a good Kara run!)
A topic like this will only reinforce sterotypes...
that US based companies and player don't care about Oceanics... and all us Oceanics do is complain... frankly we don't care about your opinions or thought on this... all we say is...
"Oi... Not Steamboat... gratz... beers are on you!"
'nuff said

It would be nice if they did, the lag can get a bit much but after a while 400ms on a good day and 900 - 1500 on a bad day you get used to it. Just funny when i hear people say they couldn't pvp on anything more than 100ms...
Also put all the oceanic in the same battlegroup that would be fun

I feel it is valid/news worthy - as already said the Aus/NZ players on Oceanic realms play at the times maintenece is scheduled
We lose the servers from 8pm on maintenece nights - we have a 30min+ crippling lag issue as well when the honour is calculated - meaning we often cannot raid ort we sit there twiddling our thumbs waiting for the lag window to pass.
Think of the Oceanic players to be the "shift workers" of the Oceanic realms.
Congrats Not Steamboat

Sorry, I agree. Not noteworthy.
I've played with a few Ozzies and NZers in previous guilds. How do you factor THEM in?

I am also an oceanic player and as much as it pains me to say this, we will never get our own servers. I hope everyone remembers the bnet.d fiasco from a few years back, where someone got their hands on the battle.net source, and used it to make freely available warcraft and diablo realms. Instantly anyone who wanted could play online without having payed for the game. If the lawsuit that followed was an indication, blizzard was pretty pissed off by this. Guess where the source code got stolen from? Uh-huh, a Telstra hosted server located in Australia. So the chances of blizzard letting another one of their servers be hosted here is? You got it, zero. Sad to say, I'd love a latency less than 4-500, but we can only dream.
Fletch Sep 17th 2007 6:13PM
It's noteworthy in the same way that an east coast guild playing on a west coast server beating Illidan would be. In other words, not noteworthy at all.
McLean Russell Sep 17th 2007 7:03PM
If the logic here applied to all realms then the only kills that would matter are world firsts. Period.
Yet we get all excited when a US guild downs someone third or fourth after the extremely good Euro guilds.
If Oceanic first don't matter then neither do US firsts or even Euro firsts. Once the *world* first kill has been accomplished, no other kill of that boss matters.
Pook Sep 17th 2007 7:33PM
I say gratz to them either way they have done better than the vast majority of the 9million players.
1, they are the first Ocianic guild.
2, maybe you should gz everyone who kills Illadan for the first time.
honkhonk Sep 17th 2007 7:17PM
I thought the "US first" was just as lame for the same reasons: they had the same progression on US realms with BC being released and blah blah blah. When that US guild finally downed him it was like a sack of rice falling over to be honest.
Ian Sep 17th 2007 7:39PM
When Death and Taxes downed Illidan was it reported as a US *AND* Oceanic Server first? Not to my knowledge.
You are all correct, this isn’t a big a deal as First US by a long mile for all the reasons stated, still this guild has pulled off something most players never will.
So why don’t we congratulate “Not Steamboat” as first Guild of the Oceanic severs to do this and let them enjoy the moment instead of making a whole editorial about how it doesn’t count for anything.
Vashnira Sep 17th 2007 11:23PM
i'm an oceanic player, and seriously, who cares, a world first is a world first.
absolutely true, maintenance isnt an excuse, our pings are usually about 500 - 1000 tho. that sux. but playable.
benmcj Sep 17th 2007 8:29PM
as an oceanic player on an oceanic realm first off gratz... secondly yeh your right america you shouldn't care its nothing to do with your realms or anything. however did you stop to think us aussies and kiwis might care... to me i thought wow cool so there is some oceanic people getting into that stuff... good on them.. the majority of us oceanic players all want the samething. local servers in our region. will we ever get it...nope. but at least someone took the timeout to at least say hey theres the first illidan kill on that group of realms. all the above comments saying who cares and all that stuff just reinforced the worlds view of america once again. YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THE REST OF WORLD.
