Breakfast Topic: Which class is the most piratey?
Yes, I know, yesterday was International Talk Like A Pirate Day, if I thought of this question on ITLAP Day, then that should make this count, right?Yar. Anyways, I got to wondering, which class would make the bestest pirates in the open waters, or on the open lands. My first reaction was rogues -- those scoundrelly rascals -- who could launch surprise attacks and scheme and cheat their way into any big adventure. But then I thought, no, rogues go around pick-pocketing people, hiding in the shadows, and wearing those silly hoods. No, indeed, rogues are actually much closer to ninjas with their "Ambush, Eviscerate, Vanish!" style of attack! And everybody knows "all nature says that pirates and ninjas must be enemies."
So then I got to thinking maybe warriors would be better -- fury warriors! Dual wielding those fancy rapiers, shouting at the top of their lungs, wearing that fancy... plate... armor.... And then I thought, pirates don't wear plate armor. They have to wear snazzy buccaneer pants, a gentleman's jacket worn all lazy-like, and possibly have some good dreadlocks for good measure. Some dirt always helps too.
My conclusion was that no class is an exact pirate match, but some classes come pretty close in spirit. Warlocks, for example, are very piratey in their own way, going against the grain of society so to speak. But perhaps it doesn't matter which class you are, as long as you can say "Arrr matey!" and perhaps have some Savory Deviate Delight. What do you think is the most piratey-est class in the World of Warcraft?

the only solution is to add pirate as a new class and be done with it - although, pirating is a way of life, so maybe pirate should actually be a race, not a class?

Restarghration Sharghmarghns!

Hunters.
Can dual-wield rapiers, or boarding axes.
Expert in the use of blunderbusses and muskets.
No plate armour (mix of leather and chain much more piratey. Or they can wear cloth I suppose)
No parrot pets per se, but a giant vulture comes pretty close.
Yarr.

not so sure about hunters, tend to be solitary creatures, pirates are more of a psuedo-democratic affair, but definitely social beings.
In many, many (many) fantasy systems the swashbuckler or similar class has been a prestige (hero) class of the common thief, assassins becoming ninjas. seeing as wow combines assassin and thief into the rogue class, your first instincts may not have been far from the mark

A pirate class would have the following:
Default dual wield and gun abilities. Primarily wear cloth and use an Energy bar. Most of their skills involve acrobatic combat moves to create a lot of dodge, but like the brewmaster, they have special "chants" and "grog" which grant party bonuses. They are like a hunter in cloth w/o a pet unless you do a full Buccaneer spec, in which case you get a pet monkey which can pickpocket, pick locks, and even afflict enemies with some dots.
In a party, Pirates act as off tanks, they pull aggro and drop it very easily, but can't hold it. They distract opponents, and either lay into them when the tank picks it up, or they keep the party in good spirits.
Their main buff is an Agility booster similar to Arcane Intellect or Fortitude.
They can upgrade to leather at level 40.
Their prime stats are agility and spirit. Makes all that silly gear make sense now wouldn't it?
Specs:
Buccaneer: More buffs and the pet.
Swashbuckler: Close range attack skills and drinking based skills
Cannoneer: Ranged attack skills.
But to answer the actual question of the topic, Rogues or Hunters.

There is no other way to go Pirate than a Rogue. Or eventually a Hunter.

@ Vestras: Go work for Blizzard now so that they put this in the game.

A crappy Rogue.

"If they ever come up with a swashbuckling School, I think one of the courses should be 'Laughing, Then Jumping Off Something'"

Hmm...
Pirate Form
10% Base Mana
Shifts the Druid into Pirate Form, allowing the use of dual-wielded swords, guns, and various swashbuckling abilities. While in Pirate Form the Druid is immune to Polymorph, Scurvy Dogs, and Ninjas.

If blizz was still going with the old hero class method (upgrade your current class to hero class) Ninja and Pirate should've been the two Rogue choices.
