Two Bosses Enter: Chromaggus vs. Shade of Aran

This week we'll be considering a fight against Blackwing Lair's Chromaggus and Karazhan's Shade of Aran. Curious about how these two fight -- or ready to voice your opinion on which would come out ahead? Read on!

- up-front fire damage
- nature damage over time as well as armor reduction
- up-front frost damage as well as an 80% attack speed reduction
- fire damage over time (can stack)
- 6-second stun
- fire damage over time, which heals Chromaggus if the target dies
- nature damage over time as well as a reduction in healing
- reduced movement and casting speed as well as a mana drain
- fire damage increased by 100% (painful with the wrong combination of breaths)
- an intermittent stun
The Shade of Aran can be found in Karazhan. Instead of relying on melee combat, he's a powerful magic user -- and like any good mage, he has relatively low health and armor, but has a high capacity for damage. In his magical arsenal are:- frostbolt, doing frost damage with a 3-second slow
- fireball, doing up-front fire damage
- arcane missiles, a channeled spell doing arcane damage
- chains of ice, a 10-second root
- slow, which reduces movement and melee attack speed for 10 seconds
- an AoE counterspell which locks down a school of magic for 6 seconds
- flame wreath, a fire AoE that's dangerous for a player-based raid, but in a one-on-one fight like this, would just be a fire AoE
- blizzard, a frost damage AoE with a slow
- super arcane explosion, which is just what it sounds like -- a lot of arcane damage
At 20% mana, he'll polymorph his opponents and stop to drink for 10 seconds to restore his mana, followed by a pyroblast. (If his drinking is interrupted -- say, if Chromaggus is immune to polymorph) -- he'll just use a potion to bring his mana up and follows it with the same pyroblast.
After 12 minutes, he'll berserk and summon Shadows of Aran, who have various high-damage AoE abilities and will quickly wipe a player raid.
With both bosses' abilities described, it's now your turn -- tell us which of them you think would emerge victorious from this fight! But remember, this isn't just a mathematical exercise! Even though Chromaggus is in a lower-level dungeon, we'd like you to consider him to have approximately the same power as Shade of Aran.

worst versus ever. If u have BWL experience you would know Chrommy would turn Aran in to dragonkin by stacking all 5 buffs on him. Aran doesn't know how to dispell.

Every time Chromagus picks Shadow or Nature as his weakness, Aran won't be able to do anything. He can effectively halt Aran's DPS.

Chrono wins. Aran's competitiveness would be reliant on him getting lucky and Chrono's vulnerabilities just happening to match his various cast phases. No contest.

The big question is if Shade Can deal out enough damage before he turns into a draknoid (I would consider that defeated. Your not dead, but your completley under control by your enemey, and i consider that a loss.
Now, the biggest damage burst would have to be shade's AoE Slow, and His Flame Wreath. We are going to assume that he is a "Dumb Boss" and both of these attacks will hit him. Also, I am going to assume that Chromaggus will not be able to DPS down shade fast enough do avoid his Pyroblast. That's enough big shot of DPS, and also his elementals, to beat him down.
But, theres still a big thing in the way. It's chromaggus resistances. This negates (do damage, but negligable overall) shade's normal attacks, leaving shade's hopes up to his special attacks.
So my winner would be... duh duh duh...
Chromaggus!
The reason being is the IFs. IF chromaggus procs Shade's Flame Wreath, IF Chro. gets caught in shade's AE, and IF he gets hit by Shade's Pyro, then I would consider it an about even fight. But, there are to many ifs in this scenario. He most likely will not proc the flamewreath since he is melee, and if he is not a "dumb boss" like I assume, then he can avoid the AE, and since his DPS is pretty impressive (Meele on a clothie?, yes please), It's possible that he could DPS shade down before the Pyro. All this put together, the final test is that even if chromaggus' attacks miss completley, shade won't be able to DPS chromaggus down quick enough to avoid getting all 5 debuffs, and thus lose the fight.

In 100 fights between the two chrommy would win 99% of them. No contest, there's just too much probability with a full on mage attacking any type of magical fel demon.

If not said, Aran dont have magic detection, so he cant guess Chromaggus vulnerability at a certain time. And if an add dies with the red debuff chromagus would also heal.
Aran only attacks with fire, frost and arcane, Chromaggus vulnerabilites also includes shadow, nature and holy, so half of the fight no magic from Aran will have advantage.
All Aran spell are calcellable, meaning that he is very vulnerable to time-lapse breath and his stun debuffs.
During his 90 seconds of existance, all elementals would be dead in a couple of breaths, and there is allways a possiblity they become Chromaggus allies after 5 debuffs ( and remember, one is undispellable by normal means ).
Aran has low armor, so he is vulnerable to melee attacks, considering Chromaggus was used to hit full plate tanks, exceptionally when enraged.
Chromaggus wins, no doubt.

Aran has no tranq shot, so perma frenzy for Chromaggus...

I'm sorry, a big two-headed Dragon-dog versus Medivh's father? Is there honestly any bloody competition?

Shade of Aran casts polymorph.
Chromaggus immune polymorph.
Shade of Aran yells "I am not some simple jester! I am Nielas Aran!"
Chromaggus laughs.
Shade of Aran casts fireball.
Chromaggus immune fireball.
Shade of Aran yells "Please, no more! My son... he's gone mad!"
Chromaggus dances with Shade of Aran.
Shade of Aran dies.
Chromaggus recieves [Mark of Domination].

Have the WowInsider people considered getting Blizz involved at the end of this to actually pit the bosses against each other? Or even find someone with a private server and try it.

I like that private server idea...not that I'm condoning private servers....

Soo... assumption is that bosses have similar damage output capability, and we have a dog that is resistant to magic and deals melee damage going against caster with low armor... and the dog is perma-frenzied... just from that Chrom would help himself to the light snack called Aran without dipping under half health.

Honestly for one second assume that there was a player controlling these characters with their given abilities and cooldowns.
If Chromag's "shimmering skin" and debuffs are at all controllable then there would be an uncontested win for the big dog.
Sade however is completely free to use any of his primary damage schools at any time. If one is locked out he can switch to another.
However, despite Chromag's vulnerabilities Shade thankfully doesn't come close to putting out 40 lv 60's worth of damage, and even with Shade's extended HP pool I see him eating dirt long before he makes a dent in Chromag's health. Perhaps 5 shades could do it, but not one.
Thingy Sep 20th 2007 4:46PM
Chromag for sure. Aran usually fights in the middle of his room so the blizzard will go around chromaggus, Aran doesn't move when he uses his molten flames either which would keep chromag still. Chromag could stand up against 40 level 60's, so 4 spawned elementals won't be a problem. Aran (the NPC version) won't know how to counter Chromag's breaths either, which will be his downfall.
Chromag by a mile. In the immortal words of a guildie and good friend of mine ... "BAD DOGGY!!!"

shades hands down. when fighting a raid he uses his weak aoe. against a more powerful opponent he would just cast that dragon soul eating fireball.
aran can 1 shot dragons how is he going to have a problem with this guy.
i would say that in this game balance isn't always just same hp lvl. figure that all bosses are set up with an aoe damage in mind. all of the old world bosses are tank and spanks which make them in 1 v 1 setting superior. however i think that if you want to make it fair you should realize as a mage they sacrifice hp for spell damage, and cc will win the day on any fight.
eek76 Sep 20th 2007 6:50PM
I think you'll find that it's Aran's son that can one shot dragons.
