Around Azeroth: Newman's Landing
Reader Jon sends in this shot of an out-of-the-way hut in Alliance territory. While you're there, anyone looking you up will see your location as "Unknown," but there's a sign that notes the tiny port as "Newman's Landing." To reach it, you either swim a north from Westfall or south from the Wetlands -- and WoWWiki warns us it's a long trip, taking 25 minutes or more. But as to what this small port is or why it's there, we can only guess.

This reminds me of the small island I found out on the side of Arathi. Good find though Jon!

Been there once on my first trip to Dun Morogh... clearly didn't know about the tram. I actually wound up in Menethil but that's ok. Got the FP and hearthed back to SW.

Did you even read the page you linked to?
You asked: "But as to what this small port is or why it's there, we can only guess."
It's not a guess:
"Newman's Landing has been found to be the area where alliance players are dropped when they first create a new character, just before the opening video sequence starts. If you stand on the island at a certain spot you may notice level 1 characters appearing for a brief instant before they disappear. A /who query on this character will then show them in the starting area of their race. This transition takes place so quickly that the new player does not even notice this area they are dropped in. Hence the name NEWman's Landing."
And that is confirmed. One boring day I swam around the entire continent, "for fun". Found Newman's Landing, and saw the occasional character blip in and out of "existence".

Given that Wow Wiki also states that area might have been named after a GM that died of a heart attack, with bones representing him (classy!), I think it's reasonable to doubt ;)
Still, it's been a long time since I've seen the human intro. I'll have to investigate to see if this does, indeed, solve an old mystery.

Haha. I found this onece while trying to get into dun Morogh, 'cause I had heard the rumor of "kill the ram mount merchant and he may drop a ram mount." And never having played an alliance at the time, I thought I could swim there... But when I found this spot, I couldn't get up onto the docks... Probably because Tauran's are just too fat.

As a horde on a PVP server, can you insta-cast and kill them?

@3: You're not the only one! I'm usually more of a "go find our for myself" type of player when starting a new MMO, and can't stand people who spam whatever channel with questions.
It was one heckuva long swim to Menathil, though. Maybe I should have asked how to get to IF :P

@9 Aye, it was. Mind you it was my first character. After having spent a week in Elwynn Forest running around the hills and maxing out my herbalism skill, it's not like I had anything more pressing to do at the time....
I had some more swimming fun with that character. Darkshore to Azshara? Never thought I'd run into mobs high enough to resist mind vision though. Stupid rock giants. >:|
One of these days though, gonna go visit the BE's lands and swim around Silithus with a druidy.

@9 I wish I'd thought to swim to IF. I tried to corpse run from Redridge before I found the tram. *sigh* I was such a noob (last week).

@10: Sadly, you can't swim to the Blood Elf area (or the Draenei area, for that matter); Blizzard has changed the Eastern Kingdoms map to indicate Ghostlands and Eversong, but when you swim around, you get the old coastline. (Which leads to some odd map glitches, when you appear to be swimming /through/ Ghostlands...)
You can get there through Eastern Plaguelands - the only way for Alliance to get there that I know of, since we can't use the portals in Shattrath or the teleporter in Undercity - but it's a hell of a run for anyone who's under 55 or so.
