Shifting Perspectives: The same old animal posterior
Every Tuesday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting druids and those who group with them, brought to you by Dan O'Halloran and David Bowers. Some people say that Blizzard is lazy. Players tend to start voicing this sort of opinion when it seems like Blizzard hasn't done something they think should have been done a long time earlier, such as adding new dungeons they won't visit, or new features they won't use. Sometimes there's just one particular thing that grates and grates on the players' nerves so much that they simply cannot understand why Blizzard hasn't done anything about it yet.
Even I have been guilty of this sort of thinking now and then. But ultimately, it becomes apparent that, whatever the status of Blizzard's list of flaws -- laziness is not one of them. Indeed, we simply do not realize the massive extent of work that is required to achieve some things, especially the things we don't personally desire, and therefore fail to give credit for hard work done where we don't realize such credit is due.
The topic at hand today is a prime example of such a problem, a druid pet peeve which has gone on for a long long time. Exhibit A, above, is the Tauren Cat Form, or rather, what some of us might wish the Tauren Cat Form looked like -- a player's own suggestion submitted in Blizzard's own art contest of 2007. The Tauren Cat Form that Horde druids have been seeing since 2004 is pictured to the left here in Exhibit B [Update: Tauren cat form has been slightly updated in patch 2.3]. Whether or not Exhibit A is the perfect replacement for Exhibit B can be left up to the good judgment of the reader, but for the purposes of this article, it is sufficient for us if we all agree that something must eventually be done about the feral druid's monotonous appearance problem. That's to say -- we tire of staring at the Same Old Animal Posterior (or SOAP).
Certainly, when we received an animal form for the first time at level 10 (see Exhibit C, the Night Elf and Tauren "Bear Form" respectively), we thought that it was quite impressive. We may have even played through 10 more levels without wishing for any variety to spice up our druidic lives. Indeed, upon arrival at level 20, we were granted another animal form (see Exhibit D, the Night Elf "Cat Form") which seemed much cooler even than the previous one. The "Travel Form" (Exhibit E) at level 30 may not have thrilled the aesthetic eye to such an extent, but many of us had heard that the great and powerful "Dire Bear Form" was on its way at level 40, and we hoped that this indeed would be a dire sight
to behold!Alas, such hopes were in vain. The "Dire Bear Form" (pictured below in Exhibit F) was exactly the same as the previous "Bear Form" except for significant statistical improvements in the way of armor and health. The statistically inclined among us were greatly pleased, while the aesthetically inclined were rather disappointed. This is when the SOAP problem first reared its ugly rear end.
We patiently played on for 30 more levels. Some of us opted to largely forego the animal forms and opt to shapeshift into moonkins or trees instead -- these talented abilities were not available to all druids, and therefore provided some added amusement. However, for feral druids still in either Cat or Dire Bear form much of the time, we found ourselves staring at the SOAP for most of our gaming experience. Now, we know that Blizzard is good at art. We have seen their varied designs on countless armor sets, as well as modifications for each set to make them look good on any player, regardless of their character's race and size. We have also seen Blizzard transform the pleasant but comparatively ho-hum Flight Forms (Exhibit G, below) into the slightly armored and infinitely more stylish Swift Flight Forms (Exhibit H, farther below). Could not something be done for the feral forms as well?
Art, in his /silly comic, had a funny idea a few weeks ago -- a true bear tank, you might say -- but the question of what our feral forms should look like is actually a rather complex and problematic one. Should the armor we wear somehow morph from humanoid to animal shape when we shapeshift? Should only certain armor such as shoulders and chestpieces, helmets and cloaks be adapted for feral forms (as well as moonkins and trees, perhaps), or would this just leave them looking absurd and rather stupid? Would it not be better to have an upgrade similar to the Swift Flight Form, which could be tailored to each form and made to look especially cool? Or would this just lead to more and more monotony as we gradually got used to it and wanted something even better-looking? What, after all, is the true purpose behind the way our character looks? Do we want our character to look cool simply for the sake of aesthetic beauty? Or do we want to look cool to distinguish ourselves from other players? Should changes to feral druids' appearance merely make them look better than they do now, or should our feral forms showcase the quality of our gear the same way that our caster forms do? How much work do we have a right to expect from blizzard when it comes to designing how our feral forms look, especially at the cost of features and content that may be more important to a larger percentage of the player base?
After considering the question in some depth, it is clear that answers that satisfy all around are not easy to come by. It makes sense that Blizzard would put this off for as long as it takes to come up with a satisfactory solution.... But will there ever be a solution, or will Blizzard just keep developing other things instead? If a solution is underway, what form should it take? In the meantime, feral druids will undoubtedly continue to stare at their SOAPs, enjoying the gameplay, and possibly rotating their camera around to the front of their character whenever possible.

I abandoned a level 67 Druid because of this problem - got sick of looking at the same dorky-looking lion and bear ass after 67 levels of it.

I have a simple solution to this. Mages got fancy polymorphs so why not fancy forms for druids the same way not real bonus just a different skin/model. Though actually wouldn't it be nice if feral weapons effected your appearance slightly could be anything from an aura effect to total model/skin change.

My guess is the Blizzard would argue that the cat form represents the race of the druid in the fact that it has horns and also the mane (or hairy back lol) represents the hair on the tauren when not shapeshifted, even the bear has the same manky mane on its back.
But thats not the point, I totally agree that the tauren got the fat end of the stick when it came to design, and as such also agree that its high time it got a spruce up:), come to think of it, the Horde got the fat end of the stick in more ways than one from a design stand point, but again this is the opinion of one (im sure some ppl would agree with me though).

If you compare the amount of content that other design houses are creating for their games in relation to the amount of money that they bring in - then Blizzard is incredibly lazy.

Why not simply allow for us to choose from the existing Cat or Bear skin models? I mean...
Make it part of the quest. You have to go out and "tame" a certain type of bear or cat you want to look like by fighting it. Once you've fought it you can then assume the skin of it.
The skins are already in place, it should be an easy thing to do.
This would REALLY add life to things. You wouldn't have to worry about "levels" of the lower bear/cats because they'd be able to easily be overcomed. I'd love to take shape of transparent kitty from Darkshore!!! :)

How about Blizzard take all your shapeshift forms *away* and leave you plucking mistletoe and dancing round stone circles, you bunch of ingrates! :P
No, seriously though, the customisable shapeshift forms is a fantastic idea.

Yah, Tauren cat form isn't as cool as the Night Elves, but there are other more offensive "laziness" by Blizzard in my opinion. Travel form, seal form, tree form, and normal flight form don't have hardly anything to distinguih them selves from the two factions. Additionally, travel and tree form are just grabbed from exisiting mob artwork! I'm a Tauren, my forms need horns!!! And I want to look unique from the mobs in the game. Perhaps seal form is so seldom used that it should go to the bottom of the priority list. But tree of life form blatently grabbed from existing art just sucks.

I agree with 4. Im a lvl 47 ferel druid and im starting to get seriously bored of looking at the same cat and bear with a very stiff uper lip.. The main problem for me is looking the same as every other ferel druid and having no choice about how your form looks. To me this seems a fairly easy (but probably not) problem to overcome, create a editor for all druid form's which allows a one off change of the characteristics of your cat or bear and so on. So when you attain your new form or already have one the editor pops up asking you if u want to make the changes. Just like editing when starting a new character, color, facial features n stuff... Personally that would do me! :D

I'm so glad this issue has been brought up. When I first hit 10 and shifted into bear and suddenly had a screen full of bear ass, I couldn't work the camera controls fast enough. And then being all excited about Dire Bear form and finding out it was exactly the same? Not nice. At the very LEAST there should be an automatic camera adjustment when you shift. Most of the time I can't even see what I'm fighting.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the "aspect" idea (ie: learning forms). I don't think any of the specs should change, it should just be a cosmetic choice and I'm sure the coding would be super easy for Blizz. One depressing thing about a druid is once they shift they all look the same, whereas other classes look progressively cooler as they get new gear. If you could only get aspects based on your level, you get start getting some really cool looks from the higher level mobs (just like the hunters do now).
Also agree on aquatic form - that is one ugly mutant dolphin.
Vestras Oct 10th 2007 11:58AM
I don't want to copy existing animal forms, cause then we just look like some hunters pet as opposed to a unique critter.
What I would like are some more choices, such as a snake form(same as cat) or a bull form for taurens instead of bear form. I think there definetly needs to be an upgrade to Dire Bear. Maybe add some spikes, or somethign to make them look even more menacing. The only armor piece I can see translating into beast forms are shoulder pads. Any other items would look pretty silly on any of the existing forms.
Moonkin and Tree forms need an upgrade as well. As much as I love my boomkin, it's still just a normal Owlkin model. Upgrading them to wear some armor would go a long way to making them look awesome. As for tree, I agree with an earlier poster: make them look more like teh Ancients of war, or even the protectors. Much better models and more tree like than the rather sparce look of the current tree. Also, make Tauren and NE trees look diffrent.
budong sea form is awful, but hardly ever used so no matter. Travel forms need an overhaul. Cheetah works for tauren, serengetti plains style, although a gazzel form would work real nice. Night elves need something darker looking, more foresty such as a panther skin or deer form.

Wouldnt it be grand to adapt the shape of lions in the barrens, then you get all the lowbies flagging themselves attacking you cause you look so much like part of the group of said lions or cats. I think that's probably why bliz hasn't quite incorporated that idea yet. I do like the idea of at least carrying over your awesome looking gear in normal form into your other forms for some flavor. I think druids pwn, but i cannot get myself to keep leveling my 43 druid because as pwnage as they are, it gets dull when you get awesome looking gear, but you have to stay in some mundane cat/bear form to put your gear to use (if you like feral). Any head, shoulder, back, feet, and gloves equippable by a druid should be modeled to fit into the druid forms.. as much gear as there is now it would prob take a long time, but it seems the only real solution. Once incorporated, im sure it wouldnt be hard to keep it up. too bad they didnt do something like that to begin with.

I love the tauren catform redesign. Brilliant use of racial characteristics merged with cat "base". I especially love the "cloven" claws.
I've always thought a golden lion shouldn't be able to "stealth", but the artist rectified this by adding markings that resemble tauren glyphs as well as leopard and tiger patterns.
Ideally, Blizzard would send that guy a load of cash and get to adding that model to the game.
I'm not certain I'm behind the idea of an adaptable selective shapeshift mechanism. Perhaps I'm alone in thinking this, but I prefer that all druid cats resemble each other, likewise bears, trees, etc... For me, it promotes a sense of class uniqueness and unity. That doesn't mean I don't think there could be additions or refinements made to existing models.
Case #1 Aquatic Form
Reducing the ear length and adding horns would go a long way to fixing the distinction between Night Elf and Tauren druids. A slight color change would be welcome, but as others have said, its a seldom used form, and doesn't warrant a lot of time.
Case #2 DIRE Bear
Dire Bears could use a graphical overhaul, but I'm against the whole "armored" variationjs being thrown around. I would prefer some additional ornamentation applied to bears at level 40, perhaps something like the "shawl" and beads that are on the Epic Flight form.
Case #3 Travel Form
Cheetahs have always seemed too similar to the level 20 catform. Allowing travel form to emulate modified stags for Night Elves and Gazelles for Tauren would not only provide a vastly different model to play and offer faction distinction, but also potentially involve the influence of Malorne, the number one druid patron animal spirit.
Case #4 Tree of Life
The current "treant" form, though using an existing NPC model, has grown on me. It has personality. The only changes I'd recommend is perhaps a slight size and foliage density increase, so the "tree" actually shades his or her party, and the amulet the Tree of Life wears should reflect the Horde or Alliance insignia, according to the druids' faction. Another idea that I thought would be amazing would be to allow the leaves of the Tree to change with the seasons.
Case #5 Alternative and Additional Forms
I've been kicking this idea around for a while, and I think it would be great to have a summonable boss event in Wailing Caverns that has a chance to drop a Serpent Form. Perhaps not a questline to the degree of the Epic Flight Form, but I'd like a chance to learn the ways of the Order of the Fang.
Obviously something not all druids would be able to easily obtain, but the trade off is that Serpent Form is not particularly useful: with a Bite melee auto attack and a ranged Poison Spit attack, the real appeal lies in the Serpent Form's "Sleep" ability to crowd control humanoids. Eh, at least I think that'd be cool, and give us a reason to go to Wailing Caverns.
Zarky Oct 10th 2007 4:40PM
i agree with 12 i'm tired of looking at mob asses
Stormsinger Oct 10th 2007 6:06PM
Yeah, in WoW a big bonus at higher levels is the cool looking equipment. Big flaming shoulders!!! Scary helms!! Glowing weapons!!! Etc, etc. But since a druid plays 90% of the time in a shift form we look all the same no matter how 133t our gear is. Tier stuff at least should give you a new look in shifted form. Flame, glow, something.
Another thing that has always seemed odd to me is that a female tauren druid turns into a male lion (with horns or course). At least give the forms a different look for genders.
But hey, I love playing my DURID so I can't complain too much.
Punkinpie Oct 11th 2007 2:35PM
#12 got it spot on, I'm so sick of staring through my bear's translucent butt / teeth while tanking against a wall. The camera angle in bear form is just atrocious, one would hope they can adjust the pivot point a bit to help us out :(
Simon Oct 12th 2007 10:43AM
The ONLY reason I have a NE Druid instead of a Tauren is the horrid cat form for Taurens. If they made cat form look as awesome as the NE form then I'd reroll a Horde Druid in a heartbeat.
njt07 Oct 13th 2007 11:13PM
Why not have the form gradually change (ie larger, skinnier, more "buff" etc) based on the amount of STA/STR/AGI the charactor has and then change the color based on the majority color of the charactors armor?
Hazimus Maximus Oct 17th 2007 4:33PM
@ 7 I like your idea A LOT. I think we all can agree on at least one thing, as popular as WoW is, it'd be nice if we had better graphics and more personalization options. I would LOVE to see a dye feature a la UO (that game was so far ahead of it's time). I think if Blizzard implemented more personalization options into the game it'd leave a lot less room for us to bitch about things.
I know it's extra modeling, code, etc.. and I am sure they are busy with things to do. But if they don't make some really nice personalization options available soon, the next big MMO is going to make sure THEY do and that's what we'll all be playing.
WoW gets so many things right, but I think character personalization is were they are really lacking. It would add so much to the game to be able to dye our armor one of 256 colors, change our appearance, get tattoos, haircuts, fill in your idea here ______ .
I want player housing extremely bad. And if I see an MMO get it right, I will most likely be making the switch, at least until WoW comes out with their own. I think instanced housing would be ideal. with the ability to pick from various land/house designs. We could set permissions for people to access it, and have ways to boot people out. Furthermore, guild forts/garrisons/castles would really be awesome. I dream of the day I can mine ore and go back to my house, smelt it, and beat it into weapon or armor x, then take it to the AH to sell.
I think the whole game could use some tweeking visually.
just my ideas...

I play NE druid. I think that Tauren bear form looks alot better than the night elf one but Tauren cat form could really use a makeover.
It would be an awesome idea if, come the time a druid goes to learn/train a new form, they got the choice of about 3 different styles. I hate when you see a couple of other druids and all look exactly the same and just 3 different and sleek models would make so much difference and variety.
Not so sure about the armor though - would probably be very difficult to set up and code.

I think that there`s a simple way to solve the (night elf) cat form problem: when the druid reaches lvl 60, It gets the appearence of a swift nightsaber form, with the cool armor they have. And about the Tauren druids, they can have an armor like the swift wolf (understand that I am talking ONLY about the armor, not the animal itself) wich would be very cool, and wouldn`t give many problems to program.
But in my opinion, putting the player armor on the animal, would be very strange, even with the size and appearence modifications
