WoW Moviewatch: The BurningWoW Staircase Event
This video has been around since Spring, but I'm pretty sure we haven't spotlighted it. It's a creative way to use a WoW private server. Instead of lining up raid bosses and making them do the Macarena, these players created an event.
They built a staircase in Azeroth a couple of miles high, allowed other players on to their private server, then had a race to the top. Let's just say not everyone made it to the top without falling. A very long way.
Check it out for a fun event that should be in the game.
Previously on Moviewatch...
EDIT: I should add that while videos created on Private Servers are great fun to watch, playing or creating a Private Server is frowned on by Blizzard. And we don't recommend doing anything that might affect your game account with them.

nice....
Personally I only use a private server so I can test out all the gear instantly, build a toon which would take me months to do normaly, but I can do in 2 mins - just to see what I should aim for, where my tallents would be best suited, ect...
But I guess this is a great reason to try a public private server sometime, for all the cool events! xD

We did something similar on a server I frequent, also one time one of the GM's morphed hordies into Illidan and we raided Stormwind xD

I'm honestly not sure what I should make of this sites recently more frequent newsitems which in some way or other include positive remarks about illegal WoW servers.

This reminds me of Maple Story jump quests... which I both loved and hated. It would be awesome to see something like this in WoW, I think.

@4
its wow related and its news. get over your high-and-mighty self.

Oh, I wasn't moralizing. I was merely curious where the site is going with this. Is it ok to make news out of it when it's fun but in general still "bad"? Or can I expect to get links to private servers here, reviews of them and a tutorial as to how to get on there?

Nothings wrong with private servers, Blizzard thinks so because they loose money, but if you dont wanna pay $15 a month when you dont wanna grind or quest, but just do end game raids and stuff like this, your hardly a looser....
So get off your "we are better than those private server bastards who dont pay but still do everything I do" chair and go play more WoW...

The problem is that it's against the TOS (I researched it) and I've put in too much time on my Blizz server characters to risk them. Not to mention when I looked into it you had to run an executable...no thanks, not on my system. They sound fun though and one day when I can get a separate disk drive and load windows and a base install of WoW just for playing on a private server I might try it but until then no-way.
Toastie Oct 20th 2007 4:52PM
Xarom, You do NOT have to run an executable and there is NO risk to your Blizzard Characters. To play on a private server all you have to do is modify your realmlist.wtf file in your WoW Directory to the private server's IP or server address. To get off of the private server band, all you have to do is delete your realmlist.wtf file and start up WoW.
Voila! Back to retail.

@5 I'd expect one of the premier Warcraft news sites to not indulge itself in supporting items of dubious legality. Especially seeing as the creation of, playing on and running of "private" servers is against the WoW Terms of Use and EULA.
Is there really so little legitimate WoW news out there with 2.3 on the PTR and the upcoming Hallow's End event (that has new elements) that there is a need to cover private server events? I sincerely hope not.
Besides all that, the event is more like something someone would create in Second Life and I can't imagine you could tie it in with any kind of lore easily. Imagine all the shouts of "lorelol" if Blizzard did something like that.
Dan's other recent post ( http://www.wowinsider.com/2007/10/14/breakfast-topic-should-all-classes-get-to-tank-heal-and-dps/ ) showed a distinct lack of understanding for the very subject he was posting about, this post lacks the same amount of foresight.
He might well be a co-lead but his posts recently have been ill thought-out and imflammatory.
Thank goodness for Matthew Rossi's, Elizabeth's and Mike's generally well written posts.

@7 Yes there is EVERYTHING wrong with private servers, you wanna play on them, that's fine but they are still against the ToS you agree to after every patch. And OF COURSE Blizzard don't want you playing on a private server for free, mostly due to them losing out on your $15 but there is also the aspect that most private servers are buggy, with major features missing and thus give a less than desirable view of the real genuine product.
If you can morally stomach playing on a private server then no, nothing is stopping you (and if you can't afford $15 then you have no choice but to play on one). But that doesn't make it "right". So get off your "I play on an illegal server because I don't wanna have to pay for anything, even if stuff is glitchy" chair and play some more WoW (and not some person's interpretation of WoW).
Tylenol Oct 14th 2007 3:41PM
ooh Private servers? I didn't know anyone could do this, I thought it was just GM's.. Im gonna look it up right and try and set one up. Cant wait!!! THX Dan and posters for indirectly informing me :)

I mean, its just a cool video. Dont get so serious about it guys =/
RogueJedi86 Oct 14th 2007 4:46PM
Well they only used a private server for fun with a sandbox activity. Like the sort of thing players of Halo 3 do with Forge. They're not endorsing private servers, it's just to see a bit of fun from one. And I know most private servers don't do that stuff. They just flag like 10x xp gain, and let people play.
What area was that at anyways? Emerald Dream?
