Is the Horseman too easy?
Now, a little while ago, Blizzard implemented an Arena points system, where as long as you ran 10 arena matches, you could stock up points and then use them for Arena weapons. So raiders (who didn't PvP much, but wanted the weapons) would save up their points even if they lost, and buy the weapons once they'd saved enough. Arena players, however, cried foul-- they said the Arena weapons had become "welfare epics." So Blizzard required a good Arena rating to buy those weapons. As of Tuesday, it's Hallow's End in Azeroth, and there is now a Headless Horseman event in Scarlet Monastery's Graveyard. Everyone I know (including me) has run the event multiple times, and Epics are dropping like Hallow's End candy. So here's the question: should Blizzard really be giving out Epics for an event that takes just a few minutes and only a modicum of skill? Aren't these as "welfare epics" as they come? Is the Horseman event too easy to be giving out loot like this?
Now, obviously, the rings and helm that the Horseman drops are hardly the Arena weapons that Blizzard had to put behind a rating. Though they are Epic, they're not that amazing-- one trip through Karazhan could probably replace all of them. But Karazhan is a ten main raid, and this is an event that can be done with as little as three people once every day (and I wouldn't be surprised to see it soloed by some ambitious Paladin before long). Already, three days into the event, my guild was running a 66 Mage in there just to get a "free" epic ring for him to use, four levels from now. Isn't that a bit much?
Personally, I love the event-- it brings people back to the old content, which is always fun, and it is a holiday.-- why shouldn't we get good loot like this? Why should Blizzard put Epics behind a timesink, rep grind, or level barrier, especially on a holiday? I'm down with events like this, and I can only hope Blizzard sees how popular it is and adds even more fun, short, loot-filled events like this for the rest of the holidays.
But make no mistake-- these are literally giveaway Epics. As fun as it is to give everyone and their brother an Epic, there's zero effort involved in getting these. And as much as I like getting a Professor Plum just for taking five people to defeat one mob, doesn't it defeat the purpose of Epic gear in the first place? And if not, why not? Why were people so concerned about the Arena weapons (which could take weeks or months to obtain anyway), and yet everyone loves the easily farmed Headless Horseman event?

hey blitzkrieg999....You cant sell the brooms on the AH,so they really arent worth farming.

"There's zero effort involved in getting these. "
As a new 70 in non purple (or even blue) gear, i'd say there was effort involved.
Sorry we can't all be omgsoleet snotheads like you, Schramm.

lol at te OP.
"Arena players, however, cried foul-- they said the Arena weapons had become "welfare epics."
It are raiders that complained about all the PvP items being welfare epics, you can get them all for free. And by this they made epics basicly worthless, epics for which raiders had to work hard.

"Though they are Epic, they're not that amazing-- one trip through Karazhan could probably replace all of them."
Untrue, actually, but it's heavily dependent on class. For instance, shadow priest itemization is so poor in the current game that the Horseman's Signet Ring (or its heroic equivalent, the Cobalt Band of Tyrigosa) is actually the best spooky ring pre-BT.

I really think people are reading WAY too much into this. It's a GAME, believe it or not, it's supposed to be FUN. Giving out a few purple rings and a decent plate helm is not going to invalidate all your raiding or arena progress. It's something for the REST of us to enjoy and have FUN with.
It's a game, get over yourself.
On a happier note, I think it's a nice breath of fresh air. It's a new, DIFFERENT, event and we're helping our low level guildmates enjoy the holiday by farming the low-level broomstick mounts for them. Our 2 70 warriors and one of our paladins have the helm, *everyone* has gotten rings, I got the pet and a flying broom, and everyone is just having a lot of fun with it.
HAPPY HALLOW'S END!

I think the boss level is fine, but when I've gone to SM and get three rings in 20 minutes, something's a bit wrong. I play a druid, and the healing ring was identical to the Band of Halos I'm already using, and the other two were better than rings in my feral dps and caster dps sets. Compared to the time required to go through heroics or KZ it is a very easy option.
Probably I would have put the horseman in a level 70 instance. Maybe more than one of them, so it takes a bit more work to get him, but it's still an extra boss anyone should be able to do. You could still run it multiple times a day if desired, but there would be just a bit more effort in getting to the horseman.
Tettra Oct 19th 2007 5:44PM
I think its not fair for the people who spent 25 badges to get the Band of Halos, to give the same item with a pumpkin as icon for free with this Horseman event. The brooms and all the halloween stuff would be more than enough to get all the 70's in the server going to SM GY. I'm not hardcore so I had to actually work for the 25 badges and I dont appreciate what blizz have done
Sloegin Oct 19th 2007 5:54PM
Hey Mike, take a chill pill. Seriously. You're way too concerned that people might be having some fun and enjoying a rare treat.
Explode Oct 20th 2007 8:56AM
These are welfare epics 100x easier to get than there equivalents in the heroics. You need to clear no trash and no other bosses to make it to this fight and you can continually try it without worrying about losing it to someone else. I remember running mana tombs 20times to get my 35 damage ring off the last boss and that is a lot of effort for a ring of its level. Blizzard just devalues epics in general when they do things like this. I hope it's all a trick and the items leave at the end of the event.

ZIP IT you carebears.
It's not FUN because it's too easy. Who cares about difficulty when it's not FUN?
The loot is crap, (not fun) the boss fight itself is not interesting or difficult (not fun)... So aside from doing it once or fives in a row.. w hat is the point of ever doing it again?
It's really not about being omgsoleet snotheads, like myself and the author, but really about shear entertainment. And in this case, the complete lack of entertainment.
It was cool the first five times in a row but I don't plan on ever going back there.

Ditto #20. I am also a new 70 - I don't have any gear yet, and I'm not yet keyed for Karazhan ... I was running out of mana during the battle, and there was effort involved. Had I not been running with better-geared guildies, the fight could've been ugly.
Stormtamer Oct 19th 2007 6:04PM
The one thing that everyone seems to be forgetting, is that its at the most 2 items.
Its a ring (that arnt suited to every spec) and a helm. Last i checked i had 12 other slots to stick gear in.
I could put in the worst gear out there, or Black Temple loot, depend on how I play, so its not gonna make hardcore gear pointless, or make casual gear have some Titanic improvement.
I think the events fine. Poster 27 pointed out its 'unfair' to have people farm badges and then get the same ring off a 5 man event, but then there also people who have already started saying 'its unfair i farmed all this SSC loot when itll be replaced by lvl 72 quest rewards'. Gear can never be fair cos theres always something vastly better in the future.
Randy Oct 19th 2007 6:03PM
@22
She is right, I hit 70 on my shadow priest and I am starting to gear up. The caster ring would be a big upgrade for me and won't soon be replaced. Now all I have to do is win the roll...
Brian Oct 19th 2007 6:04PM
I think the Horseman is great. He is wonderful for people trying to gear up for Kara who can't always get a group going. This kind of content is really good for casuals and we need some fun too. This shouldn't be seen as substitutes for main stream gear but as a bit of fun that is actually useful. I made sure my guildies who were trying to get stuff for and from Kara knew about this and I took time out to help them get what they needed. I got a funky flying broom for Outland that's a bit different while I am waiting for my engineering mount.
Before Brewfest I thought Blizzard ahd lost it but these two holidays have really gotten me back into the fun of WoW. I am really looking forward to more content like this in the future. Bring on Winter's Veil!

Who gives a flying flip about the loot?
The event is fun. So Stuff it.
PNess Oct 19th 2007 6:07PM
some insane % of this game is casuals not every night hard core raiders.
keeping these people happy keeps the game in the flow of some great cash.

It's about time Blizzard added some seasonal drop items which aren't a complete joke. Anyone crying about beating the Black Stalker of Nexus Prince on heroic is either stupid (you can wear TWO of those unique items you worked "hard" to get now) or full of themselves (heroics are not such a big deal compared to tier 5 & 6 raids).
Crying about the HH strikes me as all to similar to boasting about beating "pre-nerf bosses" or being the first to clear a certain instance. Grats, have a cookie... now go away.
Basic Oct 19th 2007 6:20PM
I considered a 3rd option to the "charity epix" whiners... you need to get out of the house. Realize that the sum total of all achievements in this game are not worth the time you put into them... it's only when we are entertained that the effort amounts to anything at all.
Sure you can sell your character on eBay. Good, now you're the 2005 equivalent to a professional gambler. Still think you've achieved something so great?
Heartless_ Oct 19th 2007 6:56PM
Try it with a bunch of sub-70's and get back to me -_o Trying to get a piece of the action with my 66 Shaman and no luck so far.
msdeller Oct 19th 2007 6:58PM
@ #21.
I agree. You beat me to it.
During Blizzcon Jeff Kaplan called them Welfare Epics (did he coin the phrase?), explaining that raiders had to "work" for their gear.
