The epics aren't that great. They're unique. You can't DE them and "pharm" shards. What's the harm? It's a fun event and let's you hang out with your guildmates/friends in a low-pressure, quick-hitting encounter. As soon as everyone gets their pet and their one class-appropriate item, folks'll be done with it.
