Breakfast Topic: Yeah, what Eyonix said

The other day Mike wrote about how he considers the Headless Horseman event to be too easy, how giving away epic gear equivalent to those found in Heroics somehow cheapens the epics others have to earn. Evidently he's not the only one with that concern. Posters on the forums were complaining about this very issue, and Eyonix had this to say in reply:
Players have a chance to participate in a fun holiday event and get a nice ring (or helmet) two weeks out of the entire year. The drops are great items, and upgrades for many, but they are certainly far from the best in-game. I'm sorry but this event doesn't undermine anything you've accomplished. Are you sure your complaint doesn't stem from the fact that your epic raid loot makes you feel like you're better than others who have lesser gear?
I'm not accusing, just asking.
He makes a valid point, that Eyonix. While some of the gear from the Headless Horseman encounter is very good, this is something that happens for only two weeks out of the year. Much like the epic loot dropped from bosses for a limited time last year (I can recall a faboo belt I got off a Lich in undead Stratholme) during the fall, these items are only available for a limited time, so act now! Really I see it as a great way to gear up those that can't run Heroics, and currently I think this is the best holiday event we've had. The items are good, but are they so good that they're worth making a fuss over?

I have two blue rings on my rogue: Lightwarden's Band (Aldor revered) and Kaylaan's Signet (Aldor quest reward). They are both better than the "epic" melee ring from the horseman as far as PvE is concerned.
I also have two blue level 66 Arcane Loop of the Bandit rings that are better for PvP and it's debatable if the epic horseman ring is better. I don't think it is.
So at least for rogues, there should be no bitching.

Good Lord, if you think the Headless Horseman loots is so bloody fantastic, go farm it yourself - problem solved, surely?

I hate it when the hardcore raiders complain about "easy/welfare epix". I mean, what's stopping these elitists to go do these "easy" contents and get these epic items as well???

Raiders need to protect their e-peens and epics from another than raiding threatens there frail little egos.
Its a fun event. The stuff isn't an upgrade for alot of people, it is for others. Get over it, go have fun and stuff it.

Yep. It's fun, the rings are decent, but not great - the melee one is roughly equal to the Aldor revered ring - and.. did I mention it's fun?
Plus the level 40 Magic Broom is BoE (all the broom mounts are) so we've sent them to the folks who just hit 40 in our guild. Why? Um... because it's fun?

I'd be surprised if there were any bad players in tier 6 gear. None that I've seen anyway.

I think anyone who bases their self-esteem on their pretend items in WoW being better than everyone else's pretend items needs to go out and get some real world perspective. It's a game, folks, and Blizzard's trying to make it as enjoyable as they can for as many people as they can. It's in their, and your, best interests to do so.

WAH WAH WAH PEOPLE ARE GETTING FREE EPIX!! This is going to destroy game balance!
Why are WOW folks so whiny? Sheesh.

I can partly understand a raider's frustration, when a good item can be obtained in a much easier way today and he went through the pain of progressing through an instance. But they should get over it and leave a few good items to casual players as well.
Nevertheless, if the complaining guy is a true raider that wouldn't have stopped him from raiding, right? Or he can stop raiding right away, because "WotLK" is around the corner and green drops from lvl 82 mobs and -god forgive- single player quest rewards will replace his epic raiding gear.
Hooray for Blizzard and I would like to see a lot more special events with special drops.

I get so tired of hearing the Epeens and Eboobs go off, who cares if I have 5 man ( yes headless horseman is 5 man loot) loot that is ~equal to your tier set? you went and raided because of the challenge right or you went and did the arenas because of the challenge?
Oops I forgot you only went to get gear so you could stand around in shat,IF,ORG and show off...
Blizz gives you that by making the weapon graphix cool and the sets look nice, get over your self.

Raiders think this is too easy?
Yup...they are right,The chessgame in Karazhan is much more difficult.....
Buuty Oct 22nd 2007 8:14AM
ZING!!! Take that holier-than-thou no-life raiders!
LOL

For a hunter the ring the Horseman drops is not that good; its worse than Garona's signet ring and the Truestrike ring. GSR is from Karazhan, the Curator, so half way through, Truestrike is a world drop iirc. So a nice ring if you are not yet in Kara, but if you are actually doing Kara its trash (and not even vendor trash cos you can't sell it!).

My guild has HHM on farm status. We get some of our better raiders together for the first 4 slots, then take a (comparatively) lowbie in with us so they can snag a ring or two. On my druid, I've got everything. All 3 rings and the Squashling. I just sell the brooms when I win one. I've seen the helm drop at least 3 times in 40 runs. Squashling about the same.
I'm all for content like this. It's accessible to everyone, and that's the way it should be. The gear is nice. All three rings were upgrades for me, though for diffrent reasons. DPS ring had better base stats than the crit/hit ring I was wearing. Healing ring replaced an old quest reward. AP ring was just good for stam. They are not amazing, but solid items for anyone who can get them who is not already deep in PVP or the highend raids.

@ 13 "And BTW ~ Having more time to play a game doesn't make you a better player"
I have to say, like just about anything else in life, devoting more time to it usually does make you better at it. When you spend several hours a day learning about and actively involved in some of the most challenging content, you're bound to get better. If you don't, then you're probably not going to make it through T5 and T6 content. That's not to say there aren't some really talented players who only play a few hours a week, but most players in T6 really do understand more of the game's mechanics than the average "casual" player.
As for getting an item level 110 ring (Karazhan loot starts at item level 115), and a nice DPS plate helm, it's not going to gear anyone up significantly. Be happy that the random PuG you just picked up or recruited into your guild has slightly better gear.

Thank you, Eyonix, for breaking it down.

"If you raid for gear, rather than just for the fun of defeating the bosses, you should re-evaluate why you play this game."
I couldn't agree with you more. Too many loot whores in this game.

I just wanted to add something to this blog. More important than the issue of people saying that Headless Horseman is too easy (which he is), is the fact that the craze to get this easy loot has caused a major strain on those people who don't need any of the gear there as they sit in LFG while half the server is in SM. I personally have found it near impossible over the past week to find what classes I need for heroics, even in guild.
