Totem Talk: Odds and more odds

Totem Talk is the column for shamans. Matthew Rossi has spent a lot of time healing inside Scarlet Monastery this week, which he didn't think he'd ever be able to say again. He got a nice couple of rings from the Horseman. Sorry that this intro is kind of dull, if it makes it any more exciting for you keep in mind that he's typing while a cat chews on his toes. Okay, that's not really any more exciting.
This week Totem Talk jumps from topic to topic like some kind of deranged frog that somehow manages to jump onto something intangible. No, I don't know how the frog does it. Maybe he's from Zul'Aman or something.
First up is news from the PTR, where I have been playing with changes to healing gear, with an elemental spec, and with good ol' enhancement and the new changes. So far, on my resto-geared shaman, the bonus to spell damage and the ability to put all of my points in resto and still use a 2h weapon has made grinding interesting, but I think that change is more aimed at someone who wants to use spells and shocks more than I do. I generally have a full enhancement set of gear that I switch to when I'm grinding or soloing and my playstyle hasn't changed dramatically just because I don't need any points in enhance to use a 2 hander, it just means I can grab even more resto talents if I want to or slap some points into elemental instead.
Since I lack a really dedicated elemental set of gear, my testing on the PTR is not conclusive, but people I've discussed it with there tell me that they are seeing a slight DPS decrease in the short term. The one ZA run I got in on my shaman also had an elemental and enhancement shaman on it, and the elemental shaman told me he wasn't entirely happy with where his DPS was. We all noticed good mana efficiency, though. The new version of Water Shield is incredibly nice. Instant cast, no mana cost to cast it, and if you don't get hit while you have it on you get back 600 mana (by the tooltip - I think it might be affected by gear, because I seemed to get close to a thousand mana back from it) so you can basically guarantee a 600 mana return every minute just by keeping water shield up. No matter what your spec, water shield just got a lot more attractive, as it's basically 50 mp5 free.
Since my gear is mostly at the Heroic/Kara level, I'd like it if commenters who are into/past SSC have any insights to share on the changes to elemental. Is it more DPS over the long term, or an out and out DPS nerf? How's your mana efficiency? Any suggestions on how to respec and maintain your viability as an elemental DPS'er? My own experience with the spec on the PTR were inconclusive at best. I seem to be saving a lot of mana and doing good damage, but I would like to hear from folks who are more heavily invested in the optimum setup for the spec.
As far as enhancement goes, I don't have anything but raves. Several instance runs on both a 70 and 64 enhancement spec shaman have led me to conclude that spirit weapons is indeed reducing our threat as advertised (I didn't even pull aggro on a really heinous WF/crit streak that would definitely have grabbed aggro before) and Shamanistic Focus combined with Water Shield and Shamanistic Rage essentially means you will have a much easier time keeping your mana up. Getting a 60% discount on shocks combined with the Mental Quickness buff to spell damage to make those shocks hit even harder after a Stormstrike crit is just beautiful. Even with a couple of green fist weapons I did very well on a heroic Sethekk run (I think I've helped something like twelve druids get their epic flight forms on test) and had very little mana difficulty.
Now that we've talked about the PTR for a while, let's talk about gear again. Specifically, let's talk about what kind of gear discussion you're looking for. Do you want more pre-raid advice, or should I be looking at gear for shaman leveling up? With the changes to experience and the new green gear available in Dustwallow as well as improved instance gear at every level from 20 to 60, I've considered writing gear guides for shaman at every ten levels or so. There'd be a guide for 20-30, 30-40, 40-50 and 50-58 (since outland gear is so nice that it generally overwhelms what's available on Azeroth between 58 and 60) as well as a general guide to the grind to 70, but I don't know if people are really interested in that kind of guide. I also want to talk more about raid gear and itemization for shamans as I progress further myself, so I'm asking you guys to let me know which of these ideas you'd like to see.
Finally, as we head further towards patch 2.3, 2.4 and eventually to Wrath of the Lich King, several columns could be written on the history of the shaman class in WoW and where it is going. Originally the horde-specific class that countered/mirrored the paladin, shamans have changed and evolved as the restriction on the class created by the necessity to provide similar functionality to the horde that paladins did for the alliance was removed. For good or ill, each faction has access to each class now. But what will shamans be expected to do in the new instances and raids? What new talents and abilities will they get? Will DPS shamans ever get a crowd control ability? Will offtanking versatility ever return to the enhancement tree? What new totems and spells could/should the class gain?
Consider this your chance to let me know exactly what you want to see in future columns. Speculation on the future? A focus on what we have on our plates as of now? Gear and leveling guides, raiding, what are you looking for from this column? More about PvP? (I'm personally kind of exhausted with PvPing on my shaman, my healer doesn't get to so anything but heal and my melee shaman spends most of his time gouged, sheeped or in love with a succubus even though I know I'm just going to end up a draenei candle.) This is the column for shamans, after all, what do shamans want to see next?

More pre-raid gear for me please :) Other than that, enjoying the column (and looking forward to going enh again with the new patch!).

I think the gear guide would be nice, in a 58-64, 65-70 (pre-raid) breakdown to start out with.
I've recently leveled a character from 1 to 60... Up until 58, I didn't even bother to worry about gear.
So, if you're going to do gear guides (please do!), start with Outlands, and as I said, maybe more like 58-64, 65-70 than 58-70.
I do have a 60 shammy who's only visited Thrallmar, and I admit I'm at a loss how to bring him to full 70 elemental glory, so personally I'm interested in it being Elem focused, but guides for all three would rock too.

Any news as far as removing the (now even more) useless int/mp5 from enhancement shaman sets?
John Oct 25th 2007 4:06PM
@3 I Personally like Int on my Enh Shammy gear. More Int means more mana means more Stormstrikes, and Earthshocks. Those are an Enh Shamans big guns. Its nice to not have to drink after killing a few mobs.

Between Warriors, Pallies, and Bears (oh my!), there's no reason for a shaman to OT. If that's the case, give me back my extra threat on Rockbiter. :D
What I would like to see for shaman is for Windfury to get un-nerfed (No more hidden CD), and to get an active agro reduction. I'm sure the new spirit weapons is going to help out alot, along with the NPC fear changes, but there's still going to be "oh crap" moments that could use the likes of feint/fade/soulshatter. If Bliz feels the need to take something to give, take Tranquil Air totem. I have never once used it. It's good on paper, but generally groups want WF/GoA/WoA totems more. Take Windwall and Sentry too, just for good measure. :)

I'm lvl 68 elemental/resto (36/23) and I'd like to know how to configure for the endgame.
It seems most groups need healers, and I can heal somehat effectively, but cannot provide the earth shield gold standard.
What equipment/strategy should I follow? Does commiting to healing nerf solo ability?
I'm not hardcore PvP but I do grind the BGs for the good equipment.
Is there equipment which is good dual purpose?

I've got a shammy alt I'm going to park at 35 until 2.3 comes out (based on lvl of the Dustwallow stuff I did on my 70 on the PTR). I have to agree with poster #2, I don't plan on really caring about gear, even with the new instance stuff until OL. I'm gonna try and run some instances if I see a group but still, it just doesn't matter except to twinking. So please, gear guides for OL. :)
Mir Oct 25th 2007 5:25PM
Actually, I think they're overdoing it.
I mean, 50 mp5, that's a _lot_ of mana! With all the mp5 on the t4/t5 sets and some +int gear mixed in (like the +40 int trinket from Kara), it's already perfectly possible to avoid going oom even during longer fights. With the new watershield, we won't even have to think about mana :P
Cranking up your damage output enough to make you attractive for raiding is much, much harder, and with the new changes it will be harder still.
Judging from what I've heard from PTR players, it seems we may be facing a decrease in dps even over longer fights, and I'm not really happy with that. On the otherhand, we're getting a little less spiky, which means easier threat management.

I am currently leveling from 1-70 as a full resto shaman. Up to level 53 now and I have recently discovered what an amazing combination a resto shaman and protection paladin are for grinding and questing. I can ghost wolf and round up 6 or 7 mobs (all lvl 51-55), bring them over to the paladin, and he can aoe them with earth shield on, I can drop a fire nova then magma totem, and chain lightning them all down (they go down FAST). We both end up with full HP and about 50% mana. Its almost an exploit it is so amazing.

Almost all of the better WoW blogs focus on end game as do many of the posts at WoW Insider. This isn't very helpful to those leveling lower level shaman alts. Gear guides for low to intermediate levels would be most welcome to me. I play all classes and finding gear upgrade paths for all of them is far more time consuming than selecting a build or refining tactics and techniques.
DrHeinous Oct 25th 2007 5:55PM
I agree with the above post. Everything concentrates too much on the high end. I'm leveling a Shaman alt, and I'd like to know more about the gear available to me at low levels. At this point I could care less about 70's raid gear; it will be forever before I get there.

I'm levelling a shaman alt now, but life seems really rough (at level 25 or so now). I'd love a levelling guide to which items/stats I should be worrying about; I'm levelling as elemental, because it seemed fun, but without a group I find that my survivability is short.
I'd love to see a guide to get me to 30, 40, and beyond. (I've finally gotten my mage into outlands, and my paladin is having great fun in Kara... Shaman just seems very different.)
Zarim Oct 25th 2007 7:58PM
@4 I used to also try to keep a balance between int and other stats on my enhance shaman too, but lately (now lvl 62) I've been focusing entirely on agi. So much so that I almost always have flurry and unleashed rage active.

Rossi:
I know a good gear guide for Outland is paramount, but as a slow-to-level cross-faction lowbie shaman, I'd really appreciate a few pointers on where to go for significant Shaman gear. I don't need a full set for each 10 level stretch, but a few questlines and dungeon drops that kinda scream Shammy gear.
Thanks
Bobby Hansen Oct 26th 2007 12:31AM
@13: No, good gear for outland is a waste of money. In your first two hours questing in Outland, you'll get better gear then you've ever had, most will be greens, and you'll love them.
Don't worry about equipping pre-outland unless you want to run instances - just get soild at-level AH greens every few levels, don't over pay for them, and keep basic enchants on them. yOu'll be plenty strong. Once you reach outland, you'll get that gear.
xhrisman77 Oct 26th 2007 5:12AM
i think a guide on what items to grab from what quest in outlands not every single quest mind you but a shouldnt miss kind thing would help

For future reference (and perhaps to help people that read these comments), a number of people have been chugging away at the wowwiki Mail healing gear page, here:
http://www.wowwiki.com/BC_healing_equipment_(mail)
Lots of good stuff in there; if you're planning to play resto for heroics and the early raid game, this is where to start.
Zumwalah Oct 26th 2007 9:46AM
Chelon: i have some good and bad news for ya..
if u wanna heal as a shaman, basically you need to be a 5 enhancement 56 resto spec to be a main healer.. well for heroics and beyond any way.
as for being able to grind with a resto spec, its do able just not as efficient as straight DPS classes, but we are getting abuff next patch where all +healing gear will recieve 33% of its +healing is +damage so grinding as a healer will be a little more efficient.
Zumwalah Oct 26th 2007 9:56AM
Dear mr author
you asked about what we may like to see in future patches/expansions with regards to the shaman..
i would like to see a few things..
1. for ele shaman viable Aoe move, such as lightning storm that for some reason Druids got.. arent shaman the masters of the elements.. namely lightning?
2. for Resto a HoT, not necessarily a driect HoT, but maybe a talent that makes my LHW apply a small hot too.. i dunno
3. A CC for either the ele or enahnce tree For example "Natural Soothing": Puts a Target Elemental or Beast into a Soothed State causing it to lose it hostility for 15 seconds.. remember these are just ideas
with a few more tweaks a shaman would become alot more desirable in a 5 man setting, but all and all im still very pleased with what we became Post BC

I'd like to see you focus on a spec and bring in the best info you can on it for people to have an easy to find reference. Info like this:
http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t13297-enhance_shaman_collected_works_theorycraft_vol_i/
And where to get it are important to Enhance Shaman.
Even leveling ones would like to know these numbers.
Finding similar info on Resto and Elemental along with gear goals for different stages would be an awesome way to increase the already good quality of your columns. I may not agree with all your opinions, but I am glad you share them so that people can learn and further enjoy this incredibly difficult class.
