Around Azeroth: Crash landing
Reader Tyler sent this image our way without any information on its specific location, so we're on our own for this one. However, there's only one place in Azeroth with quite that look -- the Tanaris desert. But where did this little plane come from? Who piloted it and who crashed it? It's one of those little details in the Azerothian landscape that has no story behind it -- it's just there.

I love all the crashed planes around Azeroth, even if most of them are only visible when flying from city to city.

If memory serves me correctly, you have to go south along the eastern coast of Tanaris, below the pirates. I think there is a quest that takes you down here, maybe not as far south as this wreck, but certainly south of the pirates. The turtles down here are red and elite, I think 50-51. It's been awhile.

Actually that plane has a story behind it, i think the pilot is from Ironforge.
This shot is actually taken from the landing, in the triangle shape southern tip of Tanaris. Most poeple never go there unless they want a high level turtle as a pet, the quest from the map fragments that drop from the pirates, or the quest line to open up the AQ40 gates.

Used to be crazy group grinding/farming in that area, I think those people moved to the hinterlands or this is where they go afterwards.
The few times I have done the map/booze quest there have always been piles of people there nuking turtles.

@2: Not elite, but they are hostile. I was down in that area this week doing the Cuergo's Gold quest (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=2882); the turtles are Surf Gliders (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=5431), 48-50 and hostile to everybody.
As I recall, the crashed plane is around 60,90 in Tanaris.

People shouldn't stop at that beach. If you keep swimming West from the end of the beach, below Tanaris/UnGoro and eventually Silithus you'll come to the Southwest corner of the map where there is an abandoned orc farm. Its odd.

Gimmlette is correct the area is called Land's End Beach in Tanaris

the Plane is kind of a part of the AQ opening. It's where Narain Soothfancy, crashed his gyrocopter when he was going back from the Island which you find his journal. Kind of a marker so you know where to start..swimming to the island..

There's another plane crash in Tanaris. If I recall correctly, it's near the barrier between Tanaris and Shimmering Flats, and it's crashed into a chunk of rock. If you go around to Shimmering Flats, you can see a blast mark in the wall at that point, so either the plane crashed through the wall or did some gyroscopic-teleportation stuff and went through the wall.

@ 9: One of the Goblins in the Flats actually explains this in a Quest Log entry (though it's more of a side-note). That huge scorch mark used to be one of their racers, before ... *ahem* ... an 'untimely incident' off the track.
