When guild banks go wrong
Hortus has answered some important questions about what happens to the guild bank when something happens to the guildleader or the guild, and the answers will be of interest to anyone planning to put deposits in a guild bank after they get released with 2.3.First of all, guildleaders apparently can't transfer or delete their characters (news to me), so there's no way they can exit the game that way without giving up the bank. A guildleader that transfers leadership of the guild also transfers leadership of the bank (makes sense). If a guildleader gets banned from the game, a GM will have to be contacted to get the bank back (so you GLs out there, don't get banned). But here's the kicker: if the guild gets disbanded, the GL will receive all the banked items in their mailbox.
I guess that's not too surprising-- if a GL had access to the bank in the first place, they can still ninja it anyway. So the lesson here is: don't put anything in the bank that you're not willing to lose to your guildleader on a bad day. It's a little strange that they put the /gdisband power in the same hands that they mail all the items to when the guild shuts down (maybe they should require a guild banker position, just to keep the GL away from the money?), but then again, if you trust your GL with your life during a raid, shouldn't you trust him or her with your hard-earned cash?

A sleezy enough player could make an in-game living off of that. Just join a sickly guild, convince the members to donate lots of money to the bank to try and upgrade/ressurect the guild, then disband it. Sounds like an Ocean's 11 type plot, but someone could do it.

Then don't use the feature, problem solved

Since GL's and officers already have a bank on mules, wouldn't this be the same thing as prior, just now there's an actual bank instead of a lvl 1 orc? Doesn't seem like it would be any different to me.

Well I really wouldn't give anything I wanted back to the guild bank anyway.

Hey does anyone know what happens to a guild if the guild leader cancels his account or if his subscription lapses?

Most Guild Masters have an alt act as the guild bank currently, and so everything is in their hands as it is. 2.3 just makes deposits & withdraws lots easier on the GM.

Old saying we had in the Army: You trust me with your life, but not your money or your wife.
Words to live by.

@10: Or even funnier, a GL gets his account stolen by a keylogger... there's a reason our guild has the bank items spread onto several accounts, then we sync it all with DuckieBank (http://www.curse.com/downloads/details/6504/)
Blizzard killed their bank feature with their funny joke of 16.111 gold to get all slots. Gold sellers are laughing hysterically already.

I'm sending all my sharp claws and jet black feathers to the guild bank. They'll be safe there, I'm sure.

At the end of the 2nd paragraph, is "GM" referring to Guild Master? The previous sentence seems to be using it as an abbreviation for Game Master. I'm sure I know what you're saying here, just omgfkcbbq, kthxbi. ;)

If you don't trust you guild leader then you shouldn't be in that guild

Bad guildleaders are a continuing problem in all MMOs. When a guildleader decides to go bad, the guild is basically F#$%*d.
I think guildleaders have too much power. Splitting it up would lead to less instances of bad behavior without consequence.

Looks like what is realy needed is a Guild Treasurer.

Yes, sorry, G, I usually use GM as both the in-game customer service rep and the guild master, but in this post, the two uses collided. I've switched it to GL, for guildleader, to leave GM for Blizzard reps.

I lie the idea of having a Guild banker (GB) who does not have /gdisband power and hence cant ninja the bank, yet one mustn't be stupid to let the GB be an alt of the GL.

I am also very interested in the answer to #10's question, if anyone knows for sure.

Couldn't they just build in some system that tracks which player put what item in the bank and send the items back to the initial owners when the guild gets disbanded?
