Pet food with stats is coming in 2.3!
Hot on the heels of the announcement that 2.3 has been pushed to the Blizzard Downloader, I found this lovely post from the highly-esteemed tradeskill priestess Kaliope about a pet food recipe she is playing with on the PTR that will go live with 2.3.Ironically I was just reminiscing the other day of the summoned pet gear items that mages are able to summon for pets in the original Everquest and wondered why no pet-specific items existed in World of Warcraft. (The degree of accuracy with which Blizzard continues to read my mind on occasion is startling!)
The recipe for Kibler's Bits, which is obtained from the daily cooking quests from The Rokk in Lower City, makes pet food that offers twenty strength and spirit for thirty minutes. I would be somewhat amused if this food had an amusing debuff if eaten by a player.
Buzzard Meat. Is there anything it can't do?

There is already one recipe in the live game. The Sporeling snacks offered by Sporeggar (http://thottbot.com/i27656) though in that case, it appears YOU eat the food and your pet gets the buff. That one offers stamina instead of strength, so it's fun to see hunters will have options for their food buffs too. :)

Actually, I believe you just have to "Use" the sporeling snacks. Just right click them. THe sporeling snacks are great for DP locks while these would be awesome for tank/DPS pets.

Yes more hunter pet buffs? /sigh

Very cool, indeed.
Kibler is also the Goblin in Burning Steppes that (Throught two different quests) give you the Non-combat Worg and Spider pets. I hope that Kibler comes back one day with a Non-Combat Pet Store or something, maybe teach your Non-Combat pets to fight in a Non-Combat Pet Arena? (Pokemon, much.)

Note that these do work on Warlock pets, I gave a warlock friend a stack of Sporeling Snacks before.

A Non-Combat Pet Arena would be cool, but no pet is a match for my cute and cuddly panda :D

I think this is awesome, I can't tell you how many times I've given my pets "buff food" and wondered if it did anything for them. This will be cool.

Pet food with stats has been around since BC release. It's a pity they don't actually work as pet food; the hunter right-clicks on it and the pet gets the buff, but it does not count as "feed pet", your pet gets no happiness, and if you try to feed it directly to the pet it will tell you it does not like that food.
Sometimes I wonder why Blizzard can't get even the very simplest things done well - there's no intuitiveness anymore. Oh, well.

The sheer tedium of harvesting strange spores for sporeling snacks makes this an attractive alternative.
I really don't get the complaints about the whole pet-snacks idea, though. Pet FOOD is what you feed your pet to keep it happy. Pet SNACKS give a special buff. It seems pretty obvious to me, but maybe I'm weird.
