Breakfast topic: I wish I knew then what I know now

A simple topic, but so difficult to figure out the answer to. If you could go back to when you first played WoW and give yourself some advice (WoW-related only, you can't tell yourself not to date that skeezy dude with the '80s hair from the Rockford), what would you tell yourself?
In retrospect, I probably would have advised myself not to make a Rogue as my first character to level. They're a nice class, but having a primary Rogue made it difficult to get into groups and raids. I would have made a Druid or Priest instead.
Additionally, I would have never tried to level in Silverpine Forest, entered Stromgarde Keep, or tried to solo all the seven billion elite quests before Outlands. I would have never tried to raid hardcore, and generally spent less time thinking about loot and more time cooking deviate fish.
What would you do differently if you started WoW again?

That leveling the Paladin up first was a really bad idea.
Ghen Nov 6th 2007 8:07AM
steer clear of people that I know now to be insane.

The rogue thing? /agree
That poot level 70 rogue, sitting their in his full d3 gear unwanted, and unloved. Poor guy.

My first character was a Warrior. After three years and many alts, I have always come back to the Warrior class; so, I would have told myself not to worry about trying every class, and instead to focus on leveling/gearing a single main character and on playing through more instances. Also, I would have told myself not to bother buying armor or weapons from vendors (yes, I did that in the beginning).

Not to take Leatherworking as a mage.

Don't level your priest Holy in Beta
Don't level your preist Holy to 60 in Retail
At least when I levelled my 3rd(!) Priest (and my third character, pretty much no alts) I went Shadow from 0-60.
Now cast your mind back to how HORRIBLE the old Holy Tree used to be. Yeah. THAT Holy Tree.

I wouldn't have leveled a Hunter to 61 first. Had a hard time getting groups so now...two years later, I'm just learning how to group properly with my new main and alts.
I would've rolled on an RP server as I've made more friends on Kirin Tor in the few months of playing there than I did in two years of playing on a PvE.

I'd have to say that it would be a good idea to have gone feral for the 60-70 grind. Once I hit 70 my guild wanted me to go feral and I had no feral gear whatsoever.

Everybody hates rogues until they roll one...
As for advice, roll a second alt in a class that you have no interest in that is a miner and other gathering profession so you can make money to support the one you actually like...
nativebrown Nov 6th 2007 8:19AM
1. pick your professions and stick with them.
2. go ahead and spend some money on fun stuff. its just a game.
3. respec VERY CAREFULLY
4. when a friend tells you it will take about 45 minutes to run WC, he's lying.

Mining / Skinning 'til your rich
Tanks & Healers are always needed in groups
Farm Gear in instances (never buy unless your rich)
alex Nov 6th 2007 9:17AM
Level first aid
Level Fishing
Takeup skinning, its good for money
Don't start that LW mule, you wont get him high enough
Don't trust Cylexan (former GL, long story)
Don't start on a PvP server
Plan your spec early on
Get a bear

Id say stay clear of 14 alts and focus efforts on a Priest (purpose) and then play a Hunter and Druid for (entertainment), Hunter is by far my favorite class, but a source of frustration concerning lack of groups, and raiding.
Whitt Nov 6th 2007 8:24AM
Don't move server until everyone else does. :)
GopherFender Nov 6th 2007 8:34AM
I wish i'd have known how much the shadowfang was worth earlier than the day after id vendored it.
still haunts my dreams.
/giggles Nov 6th 2007 8:31AM
play a shaman
Gareth Nov 6th 2007 8:37AM
I'd have not done all those grey quests, although the warlock was good I would have rolled a tank/healer first too for better group experience.
I would also have gotten into fishing in a big way to start with as it pays great as a gathering profession.
And before AV turned into a 3 minute wonder post level 60 I'd have gone around collecting all the blood I could and handing it in for masses of Ogrimmar rep - its a pain post level 60 as it ends well before you can collect a serious amount.
Lastly I'd have looked for a new server to bag the character name Legolas first, he'd be a level 1 gnome rogue just to annoy the wanabee's :)
Well actually I can still do that one now ....
Gareth Nov 6th 2007 8:38AM
And roll first on a pvp server instead of following my fickle friends onto a pve server...
