Mysterious Mysteries: What's that NPC about?
Recently on an research mission in Dun Morogh (read starting yet another alt) I came across Father Gavin, an elderly gentleman standing in the Dwarven starting area with a pleasant enough expression on his mustachioed face. What makes Father Gavin so very intriguing is not what we know about him -- he wears the tabard of the Argent Dawn, and I must assume is the Dwarves first introduction to the human race in Azeroth -- but what we don't know about him, which is just about everything else. Looking this fellow up on WoW Wiki yeilds little more than a description of his location, because, really well, there's no quest line connected to him. There are a couple NPCs out there who seem to be disconnected from society in a way Tabatha the recluse could never hope to be. How about my favorite Wetlands cipher Terl Arakor? According to WoW Head he was supposed to be a vendor, but his only use these days appears to be keeping his wagon from rolling away and providing the Horde with an easy source of wool cloth. Was he once a sheep perhaps?
There are stories out there for these people, but we can't seem to find them. What exactly is the story behind Jane and Nova (besides the obvious Final Fantasy 7 reference) trying to wake their father on the shores of Eversong Woods? Perhaps he was on a bender, and will wake up with a Thrall-sized headache just about the time the Sunwell raid instance opens. Have you seen any NPCs that seemed to have a name, seemed to have been meant to be linked to quests that no one is able to get?

Just this week I ran across a couple NPCs in Tanaris that I had never seen before:
Zalashji
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=8617
He's a Naga (of all things!) and he's friendly to Horde and Alliance. Doesn't have anything to say, doesn't seem to have any quest lines tied to him so far as WoWhead can tell.
Winkey

This is a gnome on her own random little island out where there are Coastal Giants running around. She has an eyepatch and a nifty hammock and just stands there doing nothing. Again, no quests as far as any knows.

There is also a hostile npc by senjen village if you go up the coast.

Well the Tanaris guys have quests to them.
There used to be a screen shot running around of that argent dawn guy being killed by someone with a 1500rep reduction. Similar to mind controlling the guy in the bar in Org to attack the AQ emmisary with mind control and loosing all a pile of rep.
Going to war against AD and TB is out of the picture now I guess.

The Captured Servant of Azora.

He sells level 20 cloaks, and has been captured by Blackrock orcs in the SE Redridge Mountains. He's happy to buy and sell stuff, doesn't seem at all concerned by his situation.

What's the deal with Paige and Erik Felixe near Feathermoon Stronghold? I always wondered whats up with them. They are just north of town.

Jane and Nova trying to wake their father... Sephiroth trying to wake his mother, Jenova... seems pretty self contained to me.

The two little BEs in Eversong are for one of the Dev's kids. Actually stood in line with the Dev who put them in the game when I was trying to get stuff from the BlizzCon store. He told me that the sleeping NPC is supposed to represent him, and the little girls are his daughter and her friend. The discussion of the characters came up because he was asking me which part of the game I liked most stylistically--I referenced the BE starting area just for the color and wildlife, and then we were talking about the random NPCs in the game--those guys actually came up :)

For me, as a Rogue, it has always been very frustrating that when you are at Ravenholdt Manor, guards will tell you that the Wolfe has work for you, but Winstone Wolfe has not quest line and no info! (other then the Pulp Fiction reference)

The one that always perplexed me was Myranda the Hag, a friendly (to Alliance at least) gnome that stands on a stump in the middle of the zombie and skeleton infested cemetery outside Uther's Tomb in Western Plaguelands.
Forged Nov 9th 2007 3:23AM
Myranda the Hag is used in the quest chain to get keyed for Onyxia's Lair.
Ookami.kun Nov 9th 2007 8:26AM
I don't know about Onyxia, but the only time I remember talking with Myranda the Hag was for the Tirion Fordring quest line in WPL. Maybe that's a Horde thing since my character is Alliance, the Onyxia key quests were different for me and never had to deal with her.

Rokar Bladeshadow in Durotar, and the other orc outside his hut.
I believe he says, "What does a want with a simple farmer like me?"

The ghost in Auberdine, definitely. (Sorry, her name escapes me at the moment.)
Next to the inn in Auberdine, just up the hill, is a named Night Elf female standing by a house. If you look closely, you'll see that she's semi-transparent, as if a ghost of some kind. And in earlier versions of the game the house next to her was wrecked and ruined, though it's since been straightened. I always thought there must be some story behind the ghostly woman standing all alone on the sea cliff next to that empty house, but WoWHead and WoWWiki confirm that she does absolutely nothing. How mysterious...
