Self-imposed limitations on leveling
There is a special breed of player who's not content to level from 1 to 70 in the ordinary manner. Instead, they choose to place hindrances on themselves to create a more challenging experience. Gutrot of the European Aerie Peak realm is one example. He finally attained level 70 a few weeks ago after months of questing and killing creatures naked, with no weapons or visible armor aside from his trusty loincloth. His feat has made him a minor Wow celebrity and there was a huge party when he finally hit the level cap. Other players have placed different limitations on themselves, seemingly inspired by Gutrot. For instance, Gweryc and Kakita are both melee-only hunters while Noor is a pacifist, trying to reach the level cap without killing anything.I've always been intrigued by this sort of idea, and have even made a character or two myself that had such limitations placed upon them. Recently, during the long dark night between patches, I got bored with my mindless and aimless farming and decided to create a new alt. I decided that this character would be a Draenei warrior, but that he would only fight unarmed, with a staff or with a throwing weapon. I also decided that he could only wear cloth or leather items. I suppose my idea was based somewhat on a sketchy notion of some kind of fighting monk.
I've always found the idea of a staff-wielding warrior kind of humorous, at least in WoW, and I even had Slavedriver's Cane on my warrior alt for awhile. As you might imagine, making another warrior that exclusively uses staves was appealing to me. The real draw of this type of gameplay, of course, is that it makes you rethink the entire way you approach leveling up. In essence, it's like creating your own character class. You need to think about what type of gear, professions and talents you choose in order to be as successful as possible given the new limitations you've imposed on yourself. For people that have been playing this game for several years now and have alts of every class, it's this type of thing that can keep one interested in WoW while waiting for the next patch (even if we don't have much longer to wait for the next one).
Have you ever done anything like this? Do you have any ideas for other interesting self-imposed limitations?

Someone did this over a year ago. I think it was called the naked troll project...

One Idea I had was to roll a dranei Shaman and level him as a druid. Sticking to night elf quest chains, not upgrading to mail, and using staves instead of axe/shield. Sadly I cannot shapeshift, but it's an idea.
I know a friend on an RP server who plays a human warrior with a friend who plays a druid who always stays in cat(or at first bear) form and acts as his pet so he can be a human hunter.
I approve of people who have this kind of dedication, even if it is a bit weird. For some people the endless grind or raiding are just not enough to keep them satisfied.

In response to all of the negative responses…
For me the game is challenging enough as it is. I am a casual player with limited play time. Heck, I may never see 70 just playing the normal way. However, if others want to take things up a notch and make things harder for themselves, I say go for it. It's your $15/mo, do what you want. Don't let these unimaginative and close-minded individuals hold you back!

Maybe it's time to quit?

A tauren hunter who doesn't kill animals, has a vendetta against murlocs (kills all on site - not respawns just one sweep through a murloc village) and is against the Horde alliance. As such he will not visit orc and undead cities nor group with those races for any reason. He has no qualms with blood elves so going to those cities and grouping with those characters is OK.

I think I recall at some point, someone had started a guild of the "hardcore- delete upon death" variety. Is that guild still around? I would love to roll an alt over there just to give it a shot.

Undergearing yourself is entertaining and all, but on a PVP server, as soon as you leave The Barrens or Darkshore, people start killing you. I gear up to maximize my killing potential, and to increase my chances to survive the fight.

@27: Have a mage sheep the mob you're trying to tame. I believe this still works.

I've got three of these that I'm working on currently.
The first is my Orc Warrior (male) who refuses to wear chest armor so that he can show off his bulging chest muscles. Once he gets DW, he'll be Dual Wielding as well, to be more in line with the whole orcish blood rage heritage. I also remove his shoulder armor for PvE because it interferes with his look.
The second is a Blood Elven Rogue (female) who doesn't like the look of pants. She'll only wear dresses or skirts. She's got quite a collection now. She also only uses bladed weapons and prefers them to be curved. It's rare for her to be using a blade that's not, and she only does so when absolutely necessary (when I can't kill something with the weapon I'd prefer to be using).
The third is a Blood Elven Warlock. She's leveling up in a duo with her "sister". My wife and I made twins, who look exactly alike. They also have pledged to wear exactly the same gear so that they *look* identical at all times. Their names are only one letter off from one another and they quest as a group so they get a *lot* of comments. :)
None of these make leveling all that much harder, but they get a lot of whispers and looks. :)

Shiro, any chance you and your wife are named Yurine and Yurini? :)

I have a Shaman I created horde-side that is going to level as far as she can with the gear she woke up with at level 1: Primitive Kilt (pants with +14 armor) & Primitive Mantle (shirt no stats). My idea being that she's a wild, loner tauren with no parents and no guidance. On the off chance that she stumbles into Thunder Bluff she’ll learn new spells, but that’s pretty rare and would be difficult for her to pay for (in-character of course).
Currently, she's only level 18, and it really hasn't been too terrible so far. Without too much armor I do take a lot of damage and taking on more than one mob at a time is a huge task and usually results in me dying. But if she ever dings 70 I’ll be ecstatic. I play her when I have time and I don’t consider any of the time spent “wasted” or “lost.” It’s more of a “can I do this” sort of thing.
