Forum Post of the Day: Lookin' good
If you've been reading our Shifting Perspectives druid column, then you'll probably remember our discussion of the way druids look as they level up and get newer gear. The druids over in Europe have found a new way to show Blizzard how they feel about it on their forums: in a post by Rawr, entitled "[Screenshot] Season 3 Set Looks So Awesome," they've not only highlighted how druids look in the latest arena gear (as pictured above), but they've shown compiled pics very much like all the the different gear they've had leveling up, from level 10 to level 70.
My druid looked something like this at level 10, which as you can see, is pretty drab. But once I got to level 45 or so, I completed a set I thought looked pretty nice. Now at 70, I have three sets for Bear form, for Cat form, and for healing. I don't mean to brag or anything -- my gear isn't the best in the world -- but one day I hope my druid can look like Xgeno does in his armor!
There are many players out there who may think druids' opinion on their looks is a petty issue that doesn't matter, but when you think about it, there are lots of people out there with very strong opinions on class-specific issues that other classes don't understand in the least. In an age when some players stage riots on their servers or spam forums to protest class problems, these druids have once again demonstrated that there are alternative ways to share your feelings on a particular issue.
For anyone out there who feels extremely angry, happy, or whatever, about any particular class issue, it makes sense to stop and think how you want to look in the eyes of other players before posting on the forums about it. Do you want them to get really frustrated because you're disrupting their gaming in some way? Or do you want them to read your post, then grin and say, "I see what you did there?"
[Thanks Lewi!]
Edit: Apparently the European thread Lewi brought to our attention has its roots in the US. The level 20 druid Pando showed everyone what her animal form looked like, and invited everyone to show theirs. Classic. [Thanks Delkral!]

I'd like my toon's physical size to grow with level. Is that too much to ask? A lvl 70 druid bear should look bigger than a lvl 20.
Always thought that toons should change appearance based on stats. More STR = more muscles, more STA = bigger. Everybody with lower STR and STA just stay short and skinny. Human warriors shouldn't need big armor to be bigger than human mages their same lvl!

Heck, I see where they're comig from. They're about to make it so we can pay to have our hair styles changed. Why wouldn't Druids want to change their look as they lvl? Everyone likes to look good, Druids are no exception!

Heh, that's pretty funny.
That's definitely something they need to fix about droods. I don't think they should display ALL of the gear on their animal forms, but some small pieces that hint at what they're wearing (perhaps in the form of bracelets and necklaces) would be really cool.
I really think they should make the textures on the animal forms look better. I mean, just look at Stormcrow form; it's very cool-looking.
Also, would it kill them to close the mouths?
BillDoor Nov 12th 2007 3:51PM
Great thread.
@4: Agreed on the mouth thing. I'm standing there, with my jaw dragging on the floor, and Blizzard actually took the time to ensure that I couldn't eat freakin' apples in the 2.2.2 patch.
I really like the epic flight form models, and would love to upgrade my bear form or cat form models.

I thought the way the shamans went about their protest was childish, but this one is great. It's not clogging the entire forums and is funny to read.
I've often thought this way about Shadow Priests too but atleast they have an outline of their gear.

OK ... I have always said that Druids should have their animal forms colored in relation to thier humanoid form... for instance; A Black spotted tauren with a white underbelly, would turn into a black bear with white markings. And a Blue skinned Nelf with purple hair would turn into a purple bear with blue markings... this would provide a touch of individualism, But I would love to see drood specific armor represnted on the animal forms.. perhaps the helm and shoulders would translate to armor in bear and cat form... :)

Bonus rawrbear points to those who spotted which screenshot is not like the others, and then tell us what you think of "head and shoulders" in animal forms!
Riptidez Nov 12th 2007 4:03PM
why can't forms show armor and weapons (ok moonkin does show weapon)? it could look like the cat from he-man
DJScythe17 Nov 12th 2007 4:07PM
If people can whine about how their shoulders are slightly smaller, then we druids can at least say something about how out feral forms don't get any visual upgrades as we level. It would be nice if there was at least a different graphic for Dire Bear Form than there is for Bear Form.

Sometimes, a thread comes around that is so full of win, it's just legendary. This is one of those threads...
Verit Nov 12th 2007 4:44PM
There was one change - when you upgrade from flight form to swift flight form.
The swift flight form model looks awsome. Why couldn't do that at least for bear and dire bear mode?
Vestras Nov 12th 2007 4:44PM
The fact that Dire Bear form has no visual change from normal bear form is the biggest slap in the face to druids imo. I agree with pretty much everything everyone has said, we deserve to have our forms reflect individuality at least in some small degree!
h8rain Nov 12th 2007 5:32PM
I have said this time an again. Let druids "train" forms. If a hunter can tame it, we can "learn" to mimic it.
Urthona Nov 12th 2007 5:42PM
First of all: Tauren catform needs to go. It doesn’t look stealthy at all.

The Dire Bear issue should be addressed as well. The visual distinction between Flight Form and Swift Flight is ridiculous compared to the non-change exhibited by Dire Bear. If Blizzard remodeled the Dire Bear to have a similar theme as that of the Swift Stormcrow (ie necklaces, leather armors, beads and shells, etc) if would fix the problem and disparity of wanted to “see” caster armor in feral forms.

Hrm. Beartanks in Stormrage is very inelegant.
While I support the initiative for more visual diversity amongst druid forms, and therefore player individuality, I’m wary to make a case for visible “armor”. Still, previous Shifting Perspectives articles, especially the much-misunderstood “synergy” ones, have given me a few ideas.
Personally, I’d like to suggest Spec Themes. Instead of three trees that result in a single new form, each 41-point talent becomes a determining factor for a motif which applies to all forms.
Balance druids that take Moonkin form are subject to a “starry” theme that colors feral forms in something of a blue hue with occasional “sparkles”. Moonkin bears would be especially resistant to magic damage, and moonkin cats would be a defacto mana-regeneration form.
Restoration druids that take Tree of Life form are subject to a “leafy” theme that colors feral forms in a green or gold tint with occasional “leaves” that fall from their aura. Resto bears would have an extended Frenzied Regeneration and resto cats would also gain mana from melee.
Feral Druids that take Leader of the Pack become just that: Leaders. Their size in feral forms is increased by 15 percent, making their spec of choice distinctive amongst their druid brethren. Similarly, feral cats also regenerate mana, but it’s not such a big deal for them. As Ferals have the least amount of forms available to them, I'd be willing to suggest that LotP Flight Forms cast Feral Faerie Fire, and LotP Aquatic Form and LotP Travel Form speeds increased 25%
Fair? Thoughts?

@7 - I like that!
Combine 7's idea with an actual dire bear form (make us look a little like those armored boars from RFD (or was it RFK?) or just fiercer, and fix our jaws, and I'll be fine.
Raynia Nov 12th 2007 6:57PM
All I want is for my silly leaves to be the color of my hair. Are green leaves too much to ask for!? I don't like looking like a half dead tree. :(

3 years no change.. Why do you think there will be one now?
Mary Gilmartin Nov 13th 2007 4:55AM
I would like to bigger in cat form that a hunter pet. But the bear getting any bigger might result in a worse big bear butt problem. Im all for the armour bear look though. And the helmet and shoulders look cool :)
