BlizzCon Hoax [Updated]
Evidently attendees of BlizzCon have begun receiving emails claiming that Wrath of the Lich King Beta will begin in only three weeks. According to Bornakk, these emails are a hoax, and the original statement provided regarding such a beta still holds. There is currently no WotLK beta, and should one be in the works, there would be an announcement on the official site. As always, please remember to be especially cautious when asked to provide any account information. Do a search to find out if anyone else has received the same requests, and under what circumstances. If you are concerned about keylogging programs, refer to our guide on protecting your system.
Update: Despite the fact that the rumors, and emails, have been floating around for a little while, Bornakk's official response came yesterday.

So, if Blizzcon attendees have been receiving these notices, that means that Blizzard's records of those people have been compromised.

Number 1 is right; if only the people who attended Blizzcon are getting these e-mails, something from Blizzard got out.

Can anyone say extremely old news?

you know, if those people had macs, steve jobs would have come personally to their houses and told them not to click on the link.

@6: And he could do it in an afternoon too.
But anyway, e-mail scams have nothing to do with your OS.

WHY oh WHY didn't I fly to California and go to Blizzcon? Oh, yeah because California is far away and expensive. I wish I could have gotten a murloc suit and beta access :(

I attended Blizzcon and received no email so far. It could have been caught in a spam filter, I suppose.
Bratack Nov 21st 2007 8:33AM
@6 if they had Macs, then they would already be smart enough not to click on the link.
Kahja Nov 21st 2007 11:33AM
@ 10
If it's caught in a filter you might want to check so that when they send out a real e-mail you get it.

Except that real Blizzard email gets through because it actually comes from Blizzard and is not spam. I get their email regularly. :)
