Cheating on WoW
Most of the other WoW gamers I know are simply gamers that play WoW, meaning that they play other games in addition to their Azerothian addiction. My guild forums often have a thread or two going about other games that members are playing, recommending them to everyone else, and there are many references to other games within the world of Warcraft itself. It's obvious that the core audience for this MMO plays other games as well.Personally, with an aging computer and a smallish gaming budget, I've missed out on a lot of the "must play" games of the last few years. World of Warcraft has served me well in that regard, since I haven't really needed to upgrade my hardware to keep playing it and it's a good value for the amount of entertainment it provides. Nonetheless, I have played other games from time to time, but I still find myself logging into Azeroth (and/or Outland) most days of the week, sometimes just to check auctions and mail. Oftentimes, playing other games gives me a needed break from Warcraft, even if only for a week or so. Undoubtedly, these short breaks are one of the things which have kept me playing WoW all these years.
All of this leads me to wonder how other players balance their WoW time with their other gaming pursuits. Are you a WoW purist, only playing the one game? Do you own multiple consoles and buy every table-top and computer game that's released? The last few patches have coincided with the release of some pretty big titles and there are more on the way this holiday season. Have you had to make some difficult decisions about how to spend your time and money?

WoW is quite a 'serious' game, so I like to take a break with some less taxing games - Lego Star Wars is a favourite, and I'm quite looking forward to Guitar Hero 3 turning up - I just hope my pc can cope it!
I don't have much time to game any more, so I guard my WoW time quite jealously.

I think Morrowind and Oblivion of the Elder Scrolls series are deeper games and way more fun. I merely play WoW because of the online component I think, and because I felt left out when I saw some friends playing it ;)

If you ask me, it's only "cheating" on WoW if it's another MMO.
I don't think there's anything wrong with playing other games in general though!
I have a Wii and a DS that I play regularly as well, but I only play WoW to get my MMO fix. (How could I afford anything else--?)

I've been a WoW purist for about 2 years now. I finally couldn't take all the crap my co-workers, so I broke down and bought Team Fortress 2. I realized either "I am getting old" or I am so used to WoW's casual game play, thatt freaked me out, but 1rst persons shooters seem way too fast for me. Although it was fun, I haven't given up my raiding spot yet.

I borrowed an xbox 360 from a friend, and rented Halo3, and as awesome as it was, it just stressed me out the whole time. I wanted to zoom out to a 3rd person view the entire time like in wow, but i couldn't, so i felt like i couldn't see anything.
I still play James Bond on N64 occasionally, it's the only 1st person shooter i'll ever play seriously.

I own Guild Wars, I don't like it as much as WoW. It is a good one to play when on the edge of WoW burn out, though.
I also play the multiplayer versions of a few shooters; Medal of Honor, Battlefield 1942(w/desert combat addon), Ghost Recon, Call of Duty
We got our kids a WII for Christmas, so I'm sure I'll be playing some Madden, Need for Speed, and Excite Truck in a few weeks.

I used a link from Massively to poke around in Pirates of the Caribbean Online and got up to a noteriety level 3. Other than that it's been WoW only for me for almost a year now...

Currently, aside from WoW, currently its LOTRO (lifetime subscription rocks -- no need to feel obligated to get your monthly fee's worth), Assassin's Creed, and Guitar Hero III.
dsimon Nov 27th 2007 10:06AM
Yeng, you make an excellent point about the lifetime subscription thing. I would definitely be willing to put more (read: waste more) time in to other games if I wasn't chasing that $15.00.
Sadly, I have a ps3, wii and 360 all collecting serious dust. And this is coming from someone who read the Mass Effect prequel novel. I haven't even had the heart to buy a game since I started playing wow 2 months ago.

I've played WoW enough to have levelled 3 level 70's by May of 2007 and keep them in basic blues and some charity epics, but I have also been maintaining my interest in Everquest. From time to time WoW has had my exclusive attention but my bard just kept calling me back.

I been playing WoW since launch. For awhile it was mostly wow with maybe the occasional Gran Turismo race, Madden game or GTA crime spree thrown in, raiding has a tendency to consume ALL of your game time though. Now that Im not raiding I switch it up and play other games. Right now Im playing Assassin's Creed on PS3 and COD4 for PC but WoW is still king as far as hours per week. Im looking forward to the new Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto and Gran Turismo though so 2008 could see a significant decline in WoW time.

Hmm, bought a 360 2 months ago and have owned a wii since launch. I'm currently playing Assassins Creed, Bioshock, Halo 3 (mostly online), F.E.A.R, marvel-ultamite alliance, and various others.
But the games I play the most I would say are the party games I get to play with my room mates, we have 1 TV and Four Opinions so we usually end up watching cable or play Mario Party 8, Mario Kart Double Dash, Halo 3, Or WoW (we all have accounts and started alts named after the moby dick characters) So my free time is spread pretty thin
Oldbear Nov 27th 2007 11:14AM
There are other games besides WOW?...
I play Zoo Tycoon 2 (with the kids of course...)
Pirates (And the new Pirates of the Burning Seas - if I can get a beta key...)
kunukia Nov 27th 2007 11:44AM
I can't afford to cheat. Fixed income, paying my monthly bill for WoW is the only entertainment in the budget, other than simply surfing the net.
So far, it is enough. I am an altaholic.
Oneiroi Nov 27th 2007 12:45PM
Oh I thought you meant cheating in WoW.
I had a guild break up because the leaders were together IRL...and one got a little too into another guildy.
(I hope none of them read this, ha)
Paul Nov 27th 2007 1:43PM
I really want to try mario galaxy, but the more i read the other comments, the more i get the feeling if i bought a wii, it would just sit there unused for as long as wow is an option.
Paul Nov 27th 2007 1:47PM
Other than the occasional round of James Bond on N64, the only other non wow game I play with any frequency is Jardinains 1.2 (I don't like version 2.0), which you can get on CNET.
It's a free brick breaker clone, with a strange twist. Little garden gnomes pop out of the tops of the block and throw potted plants at your paddle to try to mess you up. It sounds stupid, but I assure you, it is addicting.
When the gnomes hit your paddle, and the ball goes sailing by, all the gnomes laugh at you in unison, and it is infuriating- you just want to get them back, which means playing more!
