Leveling an army of vanity pets
Finding new ways to level your characters is always a challenge. Exactly how many ways can you push through the same levels? Try a new race and class -- been there. Perhaps working with the opposite faction -- done that. Level without weapons or armor? Well that's been done too. In the waiting game between expansions and in the wake of the accelerated experience gain, players are looking for interesting gimmicks to get them interested in leveling again. I know I tried a second hunter, leveling with Beast Mastery, and had great fun until I realized that I created yet another duplicate character without a real use.
That's why I was interested when Sarial of The Uncommon Drop wrote in letting WoW Insider know about her goal to level a character in an unusual way. Her plan is to gain experience purely through the attainment of non-combat pets. There certainly are a plethora of vanity pets out there, and collecting them was once a passion I admit I spent a little too much bank space on.
As fascinating as this project might be, I'm not sure it can be done from level 1. The first non-combat pet in my recollection would be the one that drops from the Red Whelps in Wetlands after all. But Sarial will be grinding from level 40 to level 70 with her Blood Elf warlock, which seems to be a more reasonable range. There are certainly lots of pets out there to collect in zones around those levels. Would you ever consider leveling in this fashion?
[thanks Sarial!]

I think there is a noncombat chicken that can be gotten in Westfall. But, I think that there is a quest that needs to be done to allow the ability to train the chicken. I remember a guildie telling me about it and that you needed to /cluck or something a bunch of times at the targeted chicken . . .

spam /chicken while targetting a chicken, it will ask you for chicken feed ... get it from the farmer and spam /chicken again until you can turn the quest in ... it will lay an egg for you to click on - done.
ps. a macro helps.

I remember that I ground out a few levels trying to get the Dark Whelpling in the Badlands. Never did get it :(

that sounds like an all to painful a way to level up an alt, although i guess I havent leveled enough alts to resort to leveling them in wacky ways.

You can also get the parrot and kitten in VC.

Theoretically, one could argue that in the early levels, grinding to get the money to BUY the other non-combat pets, as well as running to the other cities to get them and the discovery exp would count as well. Though like people mentioned, the chicken, siamese kitten, and green-winged macaw in Westfall/Deadmines are probably the earliest alliance side. After that, there's also the hyacinth macaw from the bloodsail pirates, as well as all the whelplings.

cat/parrot in deadmines and the black tabby cat hordeside would be the first grindable pets one can get, i think.
but seriously...are we getting kinda silly with these 'exotic leveling schemes'? i once leveled my hunter from 51 to 60 in aszhara grinding nothing but naga to get golden pearls for my priest. am i supposed to now collect the accolades and tributes of my fellow players for having killed a whole mess of mobs over and over and over? what exactly is so special about that?
leveling up completely naked takes a certain amount of skill and patience and is something i can kinda get behind on. a dps class gaining 10 levels ripping on a bunch of whelps is just a dps class gaining 10 levels ripping on a bunch of whelps.

Ugh, I can't rememeber how many hours I wasted trying to get a red whelp when I first started playing.. it made me sick... you can only say "Maybe the next one" a few thousand times before you give up and feel like your in some state of limbo... I ended up buying a whelp for 30G a few weeks later, which was almost all of my money. I was happy I finally had one, but felt shameful about how I had attained it. Then in my fisrt trip to the swamp of sorrows an emerald whelp droped after 10 kills... this left me feeling even more oddly than not getting the red one because I felt the green was aesthetically the worst of all 3, but becuase it was the rarest to collect I was able to sell it for over 100G. I tried going after the firefly in zangarmarsh a few weeks back ans as soon as I said to myself "Maybe the next one" I stopped, hearthed and tried to forget about the dam thing.

I'd do it, but on Alliance. The quest series to get the Sprite Darter Hatchling in Feralas would be nice.
Wait, no I wouldn't, one quest isn't enough.
baudkarma Nov 27th 2007 3:29PM
I'd do it, but with my luck the pet would drop in the first five kills every single time, and then I'd be stuck.

@Argent/#8
lol. Agreed. A grind is a grind. All you're really doing is grinding non-combat pets. IT happens to earn you levels along the way. In truth, all any of us are doing is just grinding for better gear and more money. It just happens to earn us levels along the way.
Here's my question: what happens when these people using these exotic leveling techniques screw up and "accidentally" earn experience outside the purview of their experiments? Do they start over? Or do they just pretend it didn't happen? How do we know that any of these people actually accomplished what they set out to accomplish?

Ugh, sounds way too boring, but if she has fun doing it then props to her. I've had an "interesting" enough time leveling the 7 characters I have to 60 and beyond.

Should've gone with Alliance, the "Freedom for All Creatures" -> "Becoming a Parent" quest chain is a good source of XP. And a good source of Sprite Darter Hatchling.
Once to Outland, there's that escort quest for Miniwing, faction grinding with Sporeggar for the spore bat, and hopefully weeks upon weeks of grinding for the Captured Firefly should get her to 70.
Of course, I wouldn't do this, but good luck to her.
