I was in a similiar situation when deciding on my S3 starting items. I have a priest though so a weapon isn't top priority for me.

I was looking at replacing my High Warlord Shoulder/Gloves with S1 or buying S3 ring, belt, and neck. It turns out that if you pop everthing into a spread sheet you can see more clearly what is a bigger upgrade. I am going with the ring, belt and neck.
