Potential traffic jams in WotLK
Adding up all the traffic jams in World of Warcraft would probably make an insightful list-- I can remember some crazy days in Ironforge, a huge mess near the battlegrounds when they first opened, a lot of clustering during the AQ World Event, and anyone who logged on in the early days of Burning Crusade knows that Hellfire Peninsula was a laggy mess as well. But Blizzard claims, once again, that they've finally learned their lesson, and in Wrath of the Lich King, things will be different. Shattrath will be designed to stay up in the air (even if landed on by thousands of players), and when we played the expansion at BlizzCon earlier this year, we already saw one way Blizzard plans to split the load: Horde and Alliance players are starting at different zones on different sides of the continent.
I doubt things will be perfect-- it seems like players always think of some way to ruin even the best laid plans of Blues and men. But we can say this about Blizzard-- they are visibly learning from every iteration they release. It'll be really interesting to see what they've come up with to improve upon the expansion experience in Northrend.

Um, don't you mean Dalaran? Not Shattrath?

LOL, he probably does. He should put double-quotes around the name, because that's essentially what Dalaran will become in the new expansion.

This was announced at Blizcon, why is it news now?
I also thought they said players would have a choice as to which zone to head to first, not that one was Alliance-specific and one Horde-specific.

Why not make it Aldor/Scryer based instead of Horde/Alliance
And why is it new now? Because they need to post something here now that massively is getting all the good news ...

I'm pretty sure you're right, that it's more by choice than Horde here, Alliance there.
Lore wise, since the Alliance will be mainly coming from the Eastern Kingdoms, and Horde from Kalimdor, there should be more Horde out in the Tundra, and more Alliance in the Fjord. Personally, I plan on going through the Tundra, and killing some buffalo men.

This is true. There are both Alliance and Horde cities in both the new starting areas.

PLEASE Devs. Make Dalaran a split city. The lag is horrid in Shattrath now. I don't care HOW you do it, but give Horde and Alliance separate sides with an auto-flag mechanism to keep each on thier own side.
Shattrath was great in theory, but it's disgusting how hard it is to move there on low end computers in high traffic times.

Woot @ different starting zones for Horde and Alliance!
I'm Horde, and since Alliance outnumbers Horde 2-to-1 on my server, I'll have a much easier time questing and grinding those first several Northrend levels than Alliance players will. Allies will probably be fighting over quest mobs and spawns in a more crowded zone.
