How to lose in Alterac Valley

It has come to my attention, as the kind of masochist who is trying to get Gladiator's gear for five level 70's before taking them into the Arenas (one team already created and one more incoming) that I run a lot of Battlegrounds now. And of all the BG's I play in, AV is the one that seems to have all that you need for a really exhilarating, awesome good time, full of close matches and hard fought victories.
Luckily my fellow players have often stepped in to prevent any enjoyment whatsoever. Out of a sense of gratitude, I thought I would compile some of the ways my fellow Horde or Alliance (depending on who I'm playing) have conspired to help keep me safely mired in a total bog of withering boredom.
Part One - We need more armchair generals, please.
Seriously, don't actually play the game. Don't make the mistake of going out there and capturing graveyards, defending towers until they burn, or even killing enemy faction players. Don't waste your time. You're a strategist. You have to share your time tested battle plans, preferable in all caps, and leave out as many vowels as you can when you do so. "Frgt IBGY, rsh RH, DON STOP FOR TWESR." While no one in the group will know who Don Stop is, much less why he seems to be running for the office of the Twesr of all Alterac Valley, you will have managed to convey your intricate strategems to the whole battlegroup. Money and accolades will no doubt follow. It is especially important to do this as a counterpoint to six or seven other people who are offering opposing battle plans in caps, how else will you convince them of the rightness of your cause?
Part Two - It's best if seventeen people stop riding to the graveyards to kill one warrior.
Yes, I'm usually that one warrior. Hi. Remember me? You were all riding to Stonehearth Graveyard and you saw me by myself and jumped off your mounts to kill me? If you're wondering why the Alliance managed to stall you there for a solid five minutes, that would be why. One or two people probably could have killed me, I'm just saying, I'm a night elf in greens. The dude with the Vengeful Gladiator's Dreadweave can probably handle it, and if not, the two paladins with him will probably help tip the odds in his favor. Likewise, it is not necessary, prudent or even useful to stop mid-field and farm honor while the Alliance is capturing Frostwolf. I know it's fun to kill the same hunter over and over again, but while you're doing that, Drek'Thar's head is on fire and his towers are ashes as bitter as the curse in his heart. This leads to the next problem.
Part Three - Try to defend almost nothing. 40 people on offense! Let's ride.
I know that Jimmysnuka is one heck of a mage. Really, I have a lot of faith in him. However, leaving him alone in front of Galv's bunker while 36 of us ride north and 3 of us try and hide behind a tree and hope no one checks the map twice to find them AFK might not be the optimal way to play the game now. See, if we have 37 on offense and the Alliance has 15 on D, they can hold Stormpike indefinitely, because every one of us who dies is spawning half the map away and every one of them who dies is spawning, oh, ten yards away from the flag in a sheltered rocky nook protected by a giant hill. Meanwhile, 20 alliance are teaching Jimmy the limitations of Frost Nova with every pointy or blunt object they can find. Towers are burning, reinforcements are depleting, and meanwhile we still can't get up a damn hill to take a flag because several people are dropping massive AoE damage from behind the sheltering arms of the rocky earth.
Part Four - Make sure to blame everyone else in as profane a manner as you can for every setback and give up as soon as the other side takes back one single tower.
Clearly everyone but you is a doddering, drooling, grunting troglodyte and if only they'd heeded the plans that leapt from your fingers like Athena, bursting forth from Zeus' brow, we would be winning instead of having lost Tower Point. Sure, we still have Iceblood GY and the Horde isn't making any progress north while we burned Iceblood and West Frostwolf, but the game is clearly over now that we've lost Tower Point. Best to give up now, but please, before you make sixteen fruitless charges into a mass of ten horde and wonder why you die so fast (it's clearly because Blizzard loves the Horde and hates Alliance that you couldn't kill ten horde by yourself) make sure to insult everyone else in the group. Tell them that you intend to or even have fornicated with their mothers, and as always, use as many capital letters and as few vowels as you can. That'll show them. They'll rue the day they lost Tower Point!
I believe that, if you follow these four simple rules, you too can lose in Alterac Valley. No, no, don't thank me: just sharing the joy, guys, just sharing the joy.

ROFL, i loved it! Having just come from a fruitless 20 losses in a row in AV (still going for the daily bg quest) i realise now that no matter what. Stay out of AV. If you need the tokens then i do truly truly feel sorry for you! you are much better off just grinding HK's in ANY other BG than you are stepping foot into AV theses days. I play alliance and all i hear is "zomg report afk'ers" and you have another 10 people standing around slapping poking and reporting the one guy who has logged in and made the mistake of taking a bio or going to get a drink! Horde never has AFK'ers i am sure! Horde get 1K honor per AV that is why we cannot win they have more honor so they have better gear blah blah blah! Loved the post mate keep up the good work!

Forget that one warrior, lets talk about that herd of NE's that dismount to kill that one holy priest =(

Actually the fighting in the middle is the strategy I follow if I want to play offence since there is no point just standing around fw waiting for 5 minutes doing nothing.
And recently I have noticed it also is a real winner in holding up the entire alliance attack as there is nothing more tempting in the game then a single shadow priest to gank, I tend to survive for about 5-10s which added to the time to mount and dismount ends up a nice little penalty of their attack plus gets them all straggled out, all for about 0.2 honour points a person :)
The one thing that does depress me about AV though is the lack of defense, so often its just a question of who has the best offense, and I cannot remember losing a game when we defending seriously (at least 5 people).
As for the strategy thing, I lost a AB match yesterday simply because I actually followed someone's advice to defend, its odd but we do need to use our initiative to win the battles.

May I add one? My boyfriend experienced this in AV 2 nights ago.
When at first you don't agree, report for AFK...
A bunch of people were argueing on the BG chat and when one person got pissed off at people not agreeing with him, he started reporting them all for AFK. I'm dead serious. I'm still waiting for these people to get on the WoW Forums and complain how it's Blizzard's falt Alliance can't win any BGs.
BaboonNL Dec 2nd 2007 5:04PM
That was brilliantly written.

agreed - I lol'ed in the office :)

Those were almost dead on. I played a few AVs this weekend and only lost 3 of 26. The three we lost (horde) ...
1) No defense. Allies ninja'd Frostwolf GY before we could assault Stormpike GY. GG.
2) Too many generals. We had about a dozen people camping "towers" giving orders. People were scattered all over. Go O, Go D ... Go All Over. Once the Alliance figured out what was going on, they went 40 on offense and we were done.
3) Let's go fishing. Seriously ... WTF. The AV was starting to drag out, we were actually doing pretty well and it was reminding me of the AVs of old. Suddenly, a Tauren warrior from Draka (hmm, what's my battlegroup) posts in /bg "OMFG, look what I just caught fishing [item link]." The item was an epic BoE ... of course some people screamed lies ... but I kid you not, after I res'd at Stonehearth and rode north ... I saw literally 15 people fishing at the pool on the left. Two people had their fishing chairs out. Again ... WTF ... and we lost.

aye, fantastic post.

Also, answering people's questions is nice too.
I know not everyone is new to AV, but I am.
I just got my first character to level 51 and I went in to check things out.
Instead of helpful people who seem to be having fun playing a fun game, my questions were shot down by people cursing, yelling (in caps of course) and a lot of "NUB!"
Is that really helpful? How am i supposed to help out and contribute if I have no idea what I'm supposed to do?
ANYWAYS, I'm glad WoWinsider is adding all this new stuff about PvP. I really enjoy AB, and from what I've seen of AV, I think I'll like it too.
Also, Matt, nice job on the podcast!

Can we add one of these for Warsong Gulch?
1. Head for the mid-ground. Since it's a wide open killing field that's near impossible to control effectively, where anyone can come from anywhere and kill you, stay there! Don't push on for offense, or stay back in the nice, controllable flag bases where you could, I dunno, plant your casters on the roof or lob dynamite down the tunnel to soften up your enemies before they get close to you. The mid-ground is the key to victory!
dpoyesac Dec 2nd 2007 5:27PM
I don't think this is quite right -- often, the group that controls the middle wins the battle, since they are already in position to (1) help their flag carrier & group, and (2) intercept the enemy flag carrier & group.
The mistake is trying to TAKE the middle when the other team already has it. You end up with one team accomplishing the good things -- (1) helping or (2) hindering the flag carriers -- and the second team doing neither as they desperately try to dislodge the others, like a sad and pointless game of king of the hill.
If the other team has the middle -- just go around! If the other team DOESN'T have the middle, take it!
Aldazor Dec 2nd 2007 5:18PM
All of those things are so true. It's sad really.
Coriander Dec 2nd 2007 5:20PM
Amen, my brother in arms!

Everything you mentioned? I've seen it happen. That's just how things were.
But -- in my battlegroup (Retaliation) at least -- the 2.3 patch has changed all that. The average battleground chat channel is now filled with... coordination of defense and offense, sharing information, responding to the Alliance strategy, etc. People actually step up, come up with a plan and we are now flexible enough to respond to the various ways Alliance tries (and fails) to win.
In other words, the new patch and its focus on strategic objectives giving bonus honor has rendered most of your examples (at least for us) to the past. Sure, there is still always the guy who yells "Zerg! Zerg! We gotta kill Van!" but we've learned to ignore him.
steve Dec 3rd 2007 9:38AM
In my group, I see two main alliance strategies: either blitz Drek and ignore the towers, or try to take out some towers first. Basically, either aggressive-O or a very-aggressive-O strategies. Most of the bg chat is the very-aggressive-O people sniping at the aggressive-O people for stopping to take Galv. This splitting of the strategy usually results in a loss for us.
And one more way to lose AV for good measure: get to Drek without a tank or healers. I've seen this quite a few times when playing O.
GamerCrusader Dec 2nd 2007 5:23PM
Best way alliance won ever:
One warrior rode up to us started reporting us and we all got kicked out of the battleground except for the one person who WAS AFK. Quickest, easiest alliance win ever. Oh did I forget to mention I was on the horde side when that happened?
Matt Dec 2nd 2007 5:57PM
Lying makes you sound cool.
You don't get kicked out when you get reported AFK, and one person certainly can't do it alone.
robotrock Dec 2nd 2007 6:33PM
also you can't report opposing players
Kahja Dec 3rd 2007 10:17AM
why is this post barely visible?

so, so true! there's time i wanna smack the lips off of those people!
