Build Shop: Hunter 41/20/0
Hello talent fans, both new and old, and welcome to another Tuesday edition of Build Shop! It's been awhile since this column examined a Hunter build (a heavy Survival build way back in June), and I think it's high time we changed that. When it comes to grinding, farming, or straight up sustained DPS, there's arguably no better build for a Hunter than Beast Mastery.
If you're new to the Hunter class, at first glance there doesn't seem to be much in the Beast Mastery tree that looks appealing. A lot of the talents in the tree seem to affect your pet more than you... and for the most part, this is true. BM hunters sacrifice increasing their personal DPS in order to buff their pet's. As such, pet choice matters a little more than it does for Marksman or Survival hunters. But it's not all about the pet -- there are some significant buffs to the Hunter (and the Hunter's party) further down in the tree. Read on, and take a closer look at a standard Beast Mastery build.
As I said before, since you're buffing your pet by speccing Beast Mastery, the type of pet you choose will play a heavy role in how much DPS you pump out. This column isn't really about pet selection, but I would recommend a pet with a nice selection of DPS skills (Cats, Ravagers, Raptors, and to a lesser degree Owls and Bats). Does this mean you have to run with one of these pets? No, but keep in mind that your overall DPS will suffer.
There are a couple of big reasons I like Beast Mastery. One of the reasons is the Serpent's Swiftness talent, deep in the BM tree. For 5 points, this talent increases your ranged attack speed and your pet's attack speed by 20%. It's like a permanent 20% haste, and with it, your base rate of fire will be faster than any other Hunter's. Another reason is the combination of Bestial Wrath and The Beast Within -- when you use BW, both you and your pet are immune to almost everything for 18 seconds. Snares, fears, stuns... nothing will stop you or slow you down except death. In addition, you'll also buff your pet's damage by 50%, your own damage by 10% and reduce the mana cost of all your spells by 20%. It really is an excellent talent if, like myself, you find yourself frustrated by losing control of your character (especially during PvP combat). The last reason is for the Ferocious Inspiration talent. For 3 talent points, every time your pet scores a critical hit on a target, it increases the damage you (and anyone else in your party) deals by 3%. Your pet should crit quite frequently, so this is an excellent way to buff yourself as well as your group.
The build I'm examining is 41/20/0, and centers on increasing your pet's DPS by buffing crit chance, hit chance, damage dealt, and Focus regeneration (Focus is a pet's power bar, similar to a Rogue's energy bar and is what they need to use their skills). It also picks up a few talents to buff your party, making you a welcome addition to a group.
Beast Mastery (41 points)
- Improved Aspect of the Hawk (5/5) - You'll use this Aspect for a good long time, and even into end game (though for some fights, Aspect of the Viper will be more useful). Attack speed buffs are always great.
- Endurance Training (3/5) - I'm using this as filler. It gives you and your pet a little more stamina, but you can shift these 3 points into something else in the 2nd tier if that works for you.
- Focused Fire (2/2) - Though you don't get the maximum benefit of this talent until you get Kill Command, you'll get the extra 2% damage as long as your pet is out.
- Unleashed Fury (5/5) - An extra 20% damage for your pet.
- Improved Mend Pet (2/2) - A really great talent. You'll use Mend Pet a lot as you level, so the increased mana efficiency is nice, but the real gem is being able to cleanse your pet of curses, disease, poisons or magic effects.
- Ferocity (5/5) - Increases your pet's chance to crit by 10%, and is a prerequisite for Frenzy later on.
- Intimidation (1/1) - Stuns your target for 3 seconds on your pet's next attack, and causes a high amount of threat. Great for letting your pet build threat early on, and is the only stun attack this build has access to.
- Bestial Discipline (2/2) - Increases your pet's Focus regeneration by 100%. More Focus means your pet can use their skills more often, which means more damage dealt.
- Animal Handler (2/2) - The mount speed increase is nice, but we're really taking this to increase our pet's hit chance by 4%. There's currently no gear that increases your pet's chance to hit, so for later dungeons and raids this one is important.
- Frenzy (4/5) - An 80% chance for your pet to gain a 30% attack speed buff after it lands a critical strike. If you want to up this to 100%, you can shift one point out of something else, but your pet generally crits so often I feel this is unnecessary.
- Ferocious Inspiration (3/3) - A 3% damage buff for you and your group after your pet crits.
- Bestial Wrath (1/1) - Increases your pet's damage by 50% for 18 seconds, and the only thing that will keep it from your target after that is death. Also causes you to go under the effects of The Beast Within.
- Serpent's Swiftness (5/5) - Increases your pet's attack speed and your ranged attack speed by 20%.
- The Beast Within (1/1) - When you use Bestial Wrath, you receive a 10% damage buff, experience 20% mana reduction on all your spells, and you can't be stopped unless you're killed.
Marksmanship (20 points)
- Lethal Shots (5/5) - Increases your chance to crit by 5%. Kind of a no brainer, since Go for the Throat gives your pet more Focus each time you crit.
- Improved Hunter's Mark (5/5) - Your ranged attack power bonus from Hunter's Mark now also applies to melee attack power. Great for buffing physical damage dealers in your group / raid, as well as your pet.
- Go for the Throat (2/2) - Your ranged critical strikes give your pet 50 Focus. More Focus means your pet uses more attack skills, and that means more damage done.
- Aimed Shot (1/1) - Buffed in a recent patch, this shot causes increased damage and decreases the effectiveness of heals on the target by 50% for 10 seconds.
- Rapid Killing (2/2) - Reduces the cooldown on Rapid Fire by 2 minutes, and after killing a target that grants experience or honor, gives you a 20% damage buff to your next Auto, Arcane or Aimed Shot.
- Mortal Shots (5/5) - Increases ranged weapon critical strike damage by 30%. Bigger crits are always welcome in my book.
There are a few places you can shift points around in this build depending on what your play style is. If you need more mana efficient shots, take Efficiency instead of Improved Hunter's Mark. If you just can't live without Scatter Shot, then you've got to give up The Beast Within. There are a few more utility-type talents in Beast Mastery you can switch out if you want to add some health regeneration or buff your pet's chance to dodge, but I think this is a pretty solid build. You may not have the giant crits a Marksmanship Hunter would have, or the utility of a Survival Hunter, but you'll do a surprising amount of damage when combined with your pet. The downside is that without your pet, your damage plummets, so make sure to keep your pet alive and fighting!
That wraps up this edition of Build Shop, but I'll be back again next week! What do you want to see on Build Shop? Send me an email with your questions or comments, and we'll talk shop.

seriously shift the points from imp hunters mark in efficiency, lower mana cost on all your shot is not something you should skip.
further more skip imp mend pet, yes youl use it alot but the mana decrease is nothing and the cleansing, who cares. put those 2 points in imp revive pet, with this talent its viable to rez your pet during combat.
for the rest the builds ok
atm i use this build for raid dps: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ceb00gxRwuVoVxbRV

I think Imp. Revive Pet instead of Imp. Mend Pet at endgame is an acceptable option if you're not doing anything but dungeons and raiding.
I still grind a lot with mine, and I find Imp. Mend Pet is invaluable.

beautiful article, but i recommend taking 2 points out of endurance and putting them in imp revive pet. 4 second pet res is AWESOME for fights where your pet dies. and while imp hunters mark is amazing, i wouldnt pass up the reduction in mana cost from efficiency. imo no hunter should be without it.
just my 2 cents :)

no, dude. no imp hawk is completely counterproductive to BM dps. and beastial swiftness is a complete waste.
Wolfkin Dec 4th 2007 6:12PM
Keep in mind that your pet's focus bar is only 100 focus total. With a high enough crit percentage, it becomes feasible to move the points in Bestial Discipline into Thick Hide (good for keeping your pet alive against trash in higher level dungeons), or Spirit Bond (which has some grinding/bg pvp usefulness), or anywhere your heart desires.
You should pretty much always take Imp Hunter's Mark as BM... your pet is going to be doing like 45% of your overall dps, and putting points in that ability is going to let your pet do more damage. Mana management shouldn't be a problem with BM spec, so you can take a pass on Efficiency.
jumb Dec 4th 2007 6:14PM
Unless you stack int, always have shadowpriests or mana totem dropping shamans in your group, imp aspect of the hawk is a bad idea.
Razhlok Dec 4th 2007 6:24PM
I don't stack int.
I don't have a shadowpriest in my group.
Sometimes I have an enhancement shaman in my group.
I run with AotH exclusively. I use Mageblood Guardian Elixir and Fel Mana Potions to keep my mana up.
As for the build in the article, its about what I have. I take 2 points out of Endurance Training and put them in Imp Revive Pet. If your pet dies there goes 30% of your damage. You need to bring him back online as quickly as possible by spending the least amount of mana as possible. I also have 5 points in Efficiency over Imp. Hunters Mark. That's just me be selfish and caring more about my damage than meleer's damage. Hey I don't top the DPS charts by giving out free AP. ;)
erisse Dec 4th 2007 6:40PM
To be honest, as a raiding BM hunter, 2/2 Imp Mend Pet and 2/2 Imp Revive Pet are must haves. 5/5 (or even 1/5) Imp Aspect of the Hawk is a complete must NOT have - anything that unpredictably screws with your haste will almost surely ruin your shot rotation (BM shot rotations are fast and tight, and you have almost no room for error with a fast bow; Imp AotH will most likely have you clipping your auto shots, which is seriously detrimental to your DPS).
Hybrys Dec 4th 2007 6:52PM
Are you serious? If you aren't doing a 1:1 ratio as BM, you fail. You want a 1.6 Auto Shot speed, for optimal DPS.
luchifer Dec 4th 2007 6:29PM
mp aspect of the hawk is a bad idea ? Then why use Rapid Fire at all? Faster fire = more shots = more chance to crit = more FI and KC

Razhlok:
"I also have 5 points in Efficiency over Imp. Hunters Mark. That's just me be selfish and caring more about my damage than meleer's damage. Hey I don't top the DPS charts by giving out free AP."
I suppose that might make a little sense if you were having mana issues, but otherwise you are sacrificing your own DPS there buddy. I hate to break it to you, but as a BM hunter your pet does a lot of melee damage. It would do even more if you had Imp. Hunters Mark.
luchifer Dec 4th 2007 6:31PM
@9 your pet count as melee damage you know? :P
Lem Dec 4th 2007 6:33PM
Too many raid ights in TBC are melee unfriendly, if you dont have good control of your pet, and some luck, your pet will die easily, which is a big deal if you are beast mastery.
I would say the 0 / 20 / 41 build is much better for raiding, the high crit chance is really nice, plus you regain mana from critting. The expose weakness is a nice buff for you and the entire raid, especially rogues tanks and other hunters, much more effective than imp hunters mark.
Also, dont underestimate readiness. For example, using rapid fire twice in a row, or if you accidently pull aggro and FD isnt up, you can rediness, FD, then continue to keep blasting, with a clean sheet of aggro and all your buffs ready to use again.
It's very nice for keeping your DPS at a maximum.
And the shot rotation is more fun than BM, which I believe is something like steady shot steady shot steady shot steady shot, yawn.
Dan Dec 5th 2007 12:58AM
Neh, in my experience thusfar (up to Kael, Vashj down) BM is acceptable and can keep up in DPS on most fights, with the exception of Leo and Alar, and Al'ar def isn't that bad (even Leo is manageable once you get the knack of it). BM seems to bring a bit more utility to the raid, as FI generally seems better than Trueshot, assuming you has at least one TS hunter already.
Now, this may all change once you get into BT, but thats my two cents.
Dan Dec 5th 2007 1:00AM
mm, Also, BM and MM hunters decidedly out DPS Survival hunters in our raids, and I cant chalk it up to skill (they out dps ME when they're specced BM or MM!)
Spenda Dec 4th 2007 6:34PM
To all of the hunters out there wondering about how talents affect your DPS, you should really play around with Cheeky's spreadsheet: http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t9816-hunter_spreadsheets_--_development/
It will open your eyes to how to maximize your DPS instead of just guessing your way through it.
BM: Max DPS Spec
MM: PvP Spec with very good DPS
SV: Raid Utility Spec with good DPS
erisse Dec 4th 2007 6:45PM
Oh, and 2/2 Animal Handler is also a must have for a raiding BM hunter - there is *no* other way to increase your pet's chance to hit.
Hybrys Dec 4th 2007 6:50PM
Okay. Huntards. Lets go.
ONE: Imp AotH is godly. Mana should NEVER be a problem, and it's such a huge DPS increase, you should NEVER pass it up. If you need mana, pop more pots.
TWO: Imp Revive Pet is only needed if you are a blabbering retard. I've never had my pet die in a fight AS SURVIVAL, excluding Archi, but, that is a given. *If you've never been to the fight, it's probably best to spec Marks/Surv for it. Your pet will not be alive for long no matter how many times you res it.
THREE: Thunderhide. Please go into WoW and delete your hunter. Animal Handler is an amazing DPS talent, and you totally pass it by. Thanks for coming, and announcing to the world you are a blabbering moron.
FOUR: Efficiency VS Imp Hunters Mark. One hunter per raiding group should have Imp Hunters Mark. This hunter should also be BM, since it's the most mana efficient tree. If you already have a raiding BM hunter that has Imp Mark
