Build Shop: Hunter 41/20/0
Hello talent fans, both new and old, and welcome to another Tuesday edition of Build Shop! It's been awhile since this column examined a Hunter build (a heavy Survival build way back in June), and I think it's high time we changed that. When it comes to grinding, farming, or straight up sustained DPS, there's arguably no better build for a Hunter than Beast Mastery.
If you're new to the Hunter class, at first glance there doesn't seem to be much in the Beast Mastery tree that looks appealing. A lot of the talents in the tree seem to affect your pet more than you... and for the most part, this is true. BM hunters sacrifice increasing their personal DPS in order to buff their pet's. As such, pet choice matters a little more than it does for Marksman or Survival hunters. But it's not all about the pet -- there are some significant buffs to the Hunter (and the Hunter's party) further down in the tree. Read on, and take a closer look at a standard Beast Mastery build.
As I said before, since you're buffing your pet by speccing Beast Mastery, the type of pet you choose will play a heavy role in how much DPS you pump out. This column isn't really about pet selection, but I would recommend a pet with a nice selection of DPS skills (Cats, Ravagers, Raptors, and to a lesser degree Owls and Bats). Does this mean you have to run with one of these pets? No, but keep in mind that your overall DPS will suffer.
There are a couple of big reasons I like Beast Mastery. One of the reasons is the Serpent's Swiftness talent, deep in the BM tree. For 5 points, this talent increases your ranged attack speed and your pet's attack speed by 20%. It's like a permanent 20% haste, and with it, your base rate of fire will be faster than any other Hunter's. Another reason is the combination of Bestial Wrath and The Beast Within -- when you use BW, both you and your pet are immune to almost everything for 18 seconds. Snares, fears, stuns... nothing will stop you or slow you down except death. In addition, you'll also buff your pet's damage by 50%, your own damage by 10% and reduce the mana cost of all your spells by 20%. It really is an excellent talent if, like myself, you find yourself frustrated by losing control of your character (especially during PvP combat). The last reason is for the Ferocious Inspiration talent. For 3 talent points, every time your pet scores a critical hit on a target, it increases the damage you (and anyone else in your party) deals by 3%. Your pet should crit quite frequently, so this is an excellent way to buff yourself as well as your group.
The build I'm examining is 41/20/0, and centers on increasing your pet's DPS by buffing crit chance, hit chance, damage dealt, and Focus regeneration (Focus is a pet's power bar, similar to a Rogue's energy bar and is what they need to use their skills). It also picks up a few talents to buff your party, making you a welcome addition to a group.
Beast Mastery (41 points)
- Improved Aspect of the Hawk (5/5) - You'll use this Aspect for a good long time, and even into end game (though for some fights, Aspect of the Viper will be more useful). Attack speed buffs are always great.
- Endurance Training (3/5) - I'm using this as filler. It gives you and your pet a little more stamina, but you can shift these 3 points into something else in the 2nd tier if that works for you.
- Focused Fire (2/2) - Though you don't get the maximum benefit of this talent until you get Kill Command, you'll get the extra 2% damage as long as your pet is out.
- Unleashed Fury (5/5) - An extra 20% damage for your pet.
- Improved Mend Pet (2/2) - A really great talent. You'll use Mend Pet a lot as you level, so the increased mana efficiency is nice, but the real gem is being able to cleanse your pet of curses, disease, poisons or magic effects.
- Ferocity (5/5) - Increases your pet's chance to crit by 10%, and is a prerequisite for Frenzy later on.
- Intimidation (1/1) - Stuns your target for 3 seconds on your pet's next attack, and causes a high amount of threat. Great for letting your pet build threat early on, and is the only stun attack this build has access to.
- Bestial Discipline (2/2) - Increases your pet's Focus regeneration by 100%. More Focus means your pet can use their skills more often, which means more damage dealt.
- Animal Handler (2/2) - The mount speed increase is nice, but we're really taking this to increase our pet's hit chance by 4%. There's currently no gear that increases your pet's chance to hit, so for later dungeons and raids this one is important.
- Frenzy (4/5) - An 80% chance for your pet to gain a 30% attack speed buff after it lands a critical strike. If you want to up this to 100%, you can shift one point out of something else, but your pet generally crits so often I feel this is unnecessary.
- Ferocious Inspiration (3/3) - A 3% damage buff for you and your group after your pet crits.
- Bestial Wrath (1/1) - Increases your pet's damage by 50% for 18 seconds, and the only thing that will keep it from your target after that is death. Also causes you to go under the effects of The Beast Within.
- Serpent's Swiftness (5/5) - Increases your pet's attack speed and your ranged attack speed by 20%.
- The Beast Within (1/1) - When you use Bestial Wrath, you receive a 10% damage buff, experience 20% mana reduction on all your spells, and you can't be stopped unless you're killed.
Marksmanship (20 points)
- Lethal Shots (5/5) - Increases your chance to crit by 5%. Kind of a no brainer, since Go for the Throat gives your pet more Focus each time you crit.
- Improved Hunter's Mark (5/5) - Your ranged attack power bonus from Hunter's Mark now also applies to melee attack power. Great for buffing physical damage dealers in your group / raid, as well as your pet.
- Go for the Throat (2/2) - Your ranged critical strikes give your pet 50 Focus. More Focus means your pet uses more attack skills, and that means more damage done.
- Aimed Shot (1/1) - Buffed in a recent patch, this shot causes increased damage and decreases the effectiveness of heals on the target by 50% for 10 seconds.
- Rapid Killing (2/2) - Reduces the cooldown on Rapid Fire by 2 minutes, and after killing a target that grants experience or honor, gives you a 20% damage buff to your next Auto, Arcane or Aimed Shot.
- Mortal Shots (5/5) - Increases ranged weapon critical strike damage by 30%. Bigger crits are always welcome in my book.
There are a few places you can shift points around in this build depending on what your play style is. If you need more mana efficient shots, take Efficiency instead of Improved Hunter's Mark. If you just can't live without Scatter Shot, then you've got to give up The Beast Within. There are a few more utility-type talents in Beast Mastery you can switch out if you want to add some health regeneration or buff your pet's chance to dodge, but I think this is a pretty solid build. You may not have the giant crits a Marksmanship Hunter would have, or the utility of a Survival Hunter, but you'll do a surprising amount of damage when combined with your pet. The downside is that without your pet, your damage plummets, so make sure to keep your pet alive and fighting!
That wraps up this edition of Build Shop, but I'll be back again next week! What do you want to see on Build Shop? Send me an email with your questions or comments, and we'll talk shop.

Lol. Give me a low rating. Okay. You can just ignore your stupidity, or, you can fix it. I recommend the latter.
Imp AotH is great DPS. If you don't want to do great DPS at the cost of some gold for ammo/mana pots.
Imp. Rev Pet is terrible, but, the points anywhere else aren't better.
Animal Handler is great for DPS because it's the only way to get more +hit for your pet.
Efficiency is great. Imp. Hunters Mark is better, since you not only help your pets DPS, but the entire parties/raids.
Sorry if you can't get that.
Nyx Dec 4th 2007 10:22PM
Can't we just ignore you?
Stoneblade Dec 4th 2007 11:11PM
Whether or not you were right isn't the issue, so much as your delivery of such information. You chose to deliver it in the manner that reeked of douchebaggery, and that, I believe is what lowered the rating.

Before you continue reading, I'd like to say that this is personal preference and I am in no way criticizing any builds on this page. They all have potential. Here's my two cents:
The beauty of the BM tree lies within the fact that your shot rotation basically becomes auto shot, steady shot, auto shot, steady shot, auto shot, etc with kill command woven in (you can also add arcane shot or serpent sting if you prefer. I personally find myself with sufficient DPS output w/o arcane and serpent). Using the incredibly efficient steady shot, it is probably a better idea to take Imp. Hunter's Mark instead of efficiency (it will take much longer to run out of mana, especially since a lot of high level hunter gear has decent mana per second). It not only buffs your pet's damage, but will help the tank gain more threat as well as increase damage for your melee DPS in the party. Also, it is wise to put two points from Endurance into Improved Revive Pet. It is inevitable that your pet will die every once in a while and it is better as a BM that you get it up and running as fast as possible, since your pet becomes a core part of your DPS.
It is personal pref. of course, but this spec and macro should give you maximum BM DPS and efficiency. I've been using it for quite a while now.

Bind this macro to a key and spam the heck out of it. It is all you really need for BM dps (unless you prefer to weave in an arcane or two).

Be sure your ranged weapon is around or above 2.7 and you will dominate the damage meters! :p

Anyone have advice on Go For the Throat + Bestial Discipline? I've heard 2 schools of thought, 1) that you only need one or the other 2) that you should really get both
Which is correct, and if it is 1 or the other, does one generally do better?
Chris Jahosky Dec 5th 2007 3:03AM
Arudehero,
If you're going to dump one or the other, I'd say Bestial Discipline, with the condition that your crit rate is high enough to make up for the slower Focus regeneration. At lower levels though, you likely won't have the gear, and both are important.

My roomate has a 70 hunter and hes a hybrid 22/32/4, i know this is kinda odd to see, but he can outdo a MM and BM Hunter in DPS. A guildie is all MM and he beats him in duels, You dont have to go one way, BM hunters cant do anything without their pets, MM hunters cant do anything if something is close up, and Survival hunters cant do much at all. If you get a nice mixture of MM and BM, Whichever you prefer with the most points, you can do better overall, (the Survival points were in-2/3 in hawk eye, and 2/2 in savage strikes) This is just from my viewpoint, ive seen him do much better in group situations because of this.
tdf Dec 5th 2007 5:17AM
If your friend is using 22/32/4 then either he's not yet level 70, or he has 3 points to spare. Assuming he's actually using 25/32/4 or 22/35/4, these are both fairly odd choices. He doesn't have enough points in BM to get Bestial Wrath, and doesn't have enough points in MM to get Master Marksman.
If he was to drop to 20/21 points in BM, drop savage strikes and put the spare ones in MM, chances are he'd see quite a nice damage increase.
Hybrys Dec 5th 2007 7:19AM
Your friend has, one, obviously gone up against idiots. That spec sounds hideous and needs to be reformed.
Secondly, Survival is actually quite a nice spec later on in gear. Even early on, you provide 200~ AP to all melee/other hunters, and, if you count that boost in their DPS, they'll top the charts by a long shot.
*I maintain about 1k DPS, adding about 40 DPS to each of the 5 offensive melee we take to raids, coming out to a total of 1.2k. Not bad for a 'useless' spec.*
tdf Dec 5th 2007 5:06AM
If you're looking for a raiding BM build:
* Do take Imp. Aspect of the Hawk - it's a DPS increase whatever way you look at it
* Do take Imp. Revive Pet - if your pet dies on a boss fight your damage drops by about 35-40%, the quicker you can get it back the better. The alternative is Thick Hide which is useless for raiding.
* Do take Animal Handler - remember your level 70 pet is fighting a boss (= level 73) so it will miss a lot by default. This talent is the _only_ way to improve its hit chance.
* Do take efficiency unless you are the only hunter in a very melee heavy guild. If you often raid with a MM hunter it will be much easier for him/her to put some points in Imp. Mark, since they will have some points to spare after putting 5 in efficiency.
bugmaster Dec 5th 2007 5:14AM
in my opinion survival becomes viable if u have the gear for it and about 600-700 agi with lightning reflexes otherwise just dont bother
BigRed Dec 5th 2007 12:24PM
I go for survivability of my pet, so I have both thick hide and endurance training 5/5. I agree that IAoH is problematic, especially when combined with serpent's swiftness. And as has been pointed out before, reviving the pet faster for less money is extremely valuable - and don't discount the purge effects of imp. mend, keeps it alive without busying the healers...I also dropped the focus regeneration since I crit often enough.
Deala Dec 5th 2007 1:33PM
I have a hunter in my guild with http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=cEfGdggRiuAoZ0z as his spec....
From what i am reading this is really bad. Does anyone know how i can help this guy out? other then rerolling -.-'
luchifer Dec 5th 2007 1:46PM
@33 he pays $15 a month to play the way he wants dont you think?
Deala Dec 5th 2007 7:58PM
Thats the thing he is unhappy about his build and what is he doing but he never listens to what anyone has to say to help. =( I see what you are saying tho, and its true. I just want to help him out so he could have more fun.
Firemoon Dec 5th 2007 3:14PM
this whole build wrong for a good Beastmaster you what something like this I find it works best for oth PVP and PVE

Steven Dec 6th 2007 8:28PM
That build is close to mine but I gave up the Best within for scatter shot. Also, I think efficiency is better than improved mark but neither are great. My build is used primarily for PVE so I used a few different points in the BM tree as well. Thick hide a no brainer and bestial swiftness is handy too.
Hammerfel Dec 9th 2007 2:30AM
"Improved Aspect of the Hawk (5/5) - You'll use this Aspect for a good long time, and even into end game (though for some fights, Aspect of the Viper will be more useful). Attack speed buffs are always great."
That's an Attack power buff, not attack speed.
dsimon Dec 10th 2007 10:00AM
lmao Hammerfel l2p
Hammerfel Dec 10th 2007 11:25AM
Whoops. My bad.. I was thinking Improved Hunter's Mark.
