Around Azeroth: A canyon sunset
Raoulduke of Windrunner sends us this perfect sunset shot (really, how do you manage to catch the sun just so?) with a challenge: he won't tell us where the shot was taken. And while I think it's pretty obvious (there's only one place in the world with rock formations and canyons like this), in the spirit of things, I'll pass the question on to the rest of you. Where in the world was this shot taken?

I'm betting that's the badlands - where those rock elementals are.
Yepa Dec 6th 2007 10:08AM
No, I'm prett sure that's 1000 Needles. Those impossible pillars of rock....so distinctive.

Pretty sure it's Thousand Needles, there are rock croppings like this in the Badlands but nothing like THousand Needles

Definitely the needles.
That place was the location of my first big "whoa" when I was playing for the first time. I'd been a bit awed by Orgrimmar when I first wander in there with my Troll. But when I got some quest to visit Freewind Post, I started my way down there. I reached the great lift at around 1a.m. server time, so it was dark when I dropped to the canyon floor -- and I tell ya, 1k Needles is a scary place in the dark.

My first "woah" moment was on the border of 1k needles into shimmering flats - just the desert/sandy scenery STRAIGHT into flat going on forever ice/snow. It was awesome. I was in such shock that I brought my lvl'ing buddy over there with me. Too bad he had a lvl 60 alt @ the time and I was just showing off my noobishness because he thought I was rolling an alt too.

I love 1K Needles. The scenery is cool, and I often imagine that I'll see the coyote and the roadrunner go zooming by at any moment, lol. I wish there were more alliance quests for that zone (not counting the Shimmering Flats).

Of course it's Thousand Needles, but can anyone identify exactly where in the zone it is? The dropdown in the very foreground makes me think it's on the border with the Shimmering Flats, facing west.
