Don't pay extra for the white

One of the most common mistakes made by new players is spending money where they shouldn't, or spending more than they could have. This may not be of consequence to a level 70, or to those who have level 70s funding their lower characters; but for anyone leveling for the first time, getting swindled can severely eat into your wallet.
When leveling professions in particular, which is a very expensive endeavor, one must take extra care. The various recipes you can purchase in the auction house are sometimes overpriced, and other times, are scamming you out of figures such as 80x more than you would have otherwise paid. How can this be? The main way in which you'll see players getting away with this is through selling patterns that are white, as opposed to green, blue or purple.
White patterns are vendor-quality items, which means that there are vendors out there, somewhere, that are selling them. Often for 25s-1g pre-Outland, and 4-6g in Outland. These same patterns often sell on the Auction House for up to 20g. In fact, many players go out of their way to hunt down white patterns and sell them at marked up prices. Here are some ways to determine whether the player selling your item is a reseller:
- Is that player selling multiples of the same pattern?
- Does the player have other white patterns for sale?
Head over to a website like Thottbot or Wowhead and find the search box. Simply type in the name of the pattern or recipe, and you will be given information about which vendors sell the item, as well as locations and prices. If the vendor is out of your way, consider asking a guildie or higher level friend to stop by. If this is not realistic, check the Auction House and see if the prices being asked are worth saving you the trouble of heading to the vendor yourself, or waiting. Often, they are not.
Our friend Tuscansalami over at the Khorium Toolbox has been kind enough to list white engineering schematics, complete with links and information regarding how and where you can acquire them. If you have compiled lists of white schematics for other professions, or know of some good ones, feel free to drop a line in the comments and I'll update this post.
As a final note, I would like to point out that green, blue and purple patterns, like all items, are also subject to being marked up. Because they tend to be drops and not vendor items, the prices will be considerably higher than white patterns; but, a quick search through a WoW database site is your best bet to avoid overpaying.

I use GFW Adspace, I think is the title of the addon. I scan the auction house for useable stuff, check where to buy it, and run there. I love it. Then, sometimes, I buy extra's, and sell them myself. Fishing is one I do that alot with. First aid is also a very useful sell.

Arrggg!!!, you are ruining my noob-exploitations! I make like 5g a day selling vendor recipes I buy for 4s.
Move along....nothing to see here.

Not all green recipes are worth buying at AH either, the recipe for Primal Might is green, so way back when BC was out I bought it on the AH. Little did I know I could have spend 1/2 the gold buying it from the vender in Shatt. So you should really know what you are buying and where it drops from even if it is a green before getting on AH.

Yeah, SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

For a while there were actually white recipes that were were not vendored. Was this ever changed or is it still possible to get white recipes from drops that are not sold by vendors?
I can't think of any off the top of my head but I know they did exist.

There are actually some white patterns that you can't buy from vendors like Elixir of Ogre Strength and Mighty Troll Blood's Potion.

New auctioneer has a line on the tooltip that states the number of vendors that sell the item. I've been loving that since it arrived. Skips a step.

"Arrggg!!!, you are ruining my noob-exploitations! I make like 5g a day selling vendor recipes I buy for 4s."
That's cool. I'll still keep buying. If you buy a vendor recipe for 4s and I pay 3-5g for it, you get big markup and I don't have to waste my time flying all over Azeroth and Outland picking them up.

Exactly. Just because someone is selling multiple of the same things doesn't mean they're trying to fleece the public. When i'm in Arathi Highlands, I usually swing by and pick up the First aid manuals, and sell them marked up for a couple gold.
But when I'm leveling up an alt's first aid, and i don't have a manual, i'll gladly pay for a marked up FA manual, sometimes my time is worth more than my money.

When I first got to Outlands, I found I could make nearly a 100% profit from reselling the 20-slot profession bags you can buy from vendors in HFP.
This struck me as weird particularly because anyone with a character high enough to have money spend on stuff like that would probably know they can get those bags from vendors. But maybe they were *gasp* gold buyers.

I made more than enough money for a mount at 40 plus keeping me up to snuff in overpriced AH blues. But since most players on my server are now only rolling alts through the low levels, the profit has dropped off considerably.

Fizzwidget's Adspace is designed specifically to let you know when something on the AH can be bought from a vendor.

It was actually featured as part of an article in Insider Trading on this site awhile back.

SOme recipies come from reputation vendors and are thus not accessable to everyone in the game. I haven't checked in a while but I remember tailoring patterns from a Scryer vendor in Shadowmoon. I think it's imbued netherweave tunic and robe. They sell for 5g from the vendor and went for 10-20g on the AH. They were in limited numbers from the vendor but the timer was about 10 min or so.
My old schedule for 20-40g a day in profits just from those recipies-- Fly in, buy them, do my dailies, buy more, fly out.
Baluki Dec 7th 2007 12:27PM
I used to sell lowbie cooking recipes for 1 or 2g a piece, but it wasn't really worth the time. I was mainly marketing to people like me who are too lazy to track down a vendor and want to have EVERY recipe on their lists. Then again, I have no way of knowing if I was selling to lazy people or newbies.
mike Dec 7th 2007 12:34PM
The worst one is the cooking book (I think it is) which is in ashenvale. As an alliance player spending most of my time on the Eastern Continent I will buy the cookbook from the AH every time for a higher price than wasting my time to go all the way to ashenvale.
Jess Dec 7th 2007 12:52PM
I'll pay about 5 gold above the vendor cost for white patterns off the AH. Last time I tried to "save money" by going to get the patterns myself, I ended up wasting hours of my time because of traveling all over the world, and then some of the patterns were limited spawn so I had to wait for a long time for them to appear. In the amount of time I spent saving 20g instead of buying off the AH, I could have made more than a hundred gold on my 70 doing dailies.
Like our friends the goblins say, "Time is money friend!"
GRT Dec 7th 2007 1:01PM
Actually I find it hard to believe maybe newbies are being 'fleeced' by these practices, just because most newbies don't have any money anyway. Like so many others, I'll sell vendor items on the AH for a markup just banking on selling to people who don't want to be bothered with making the trip. And conversely when I'm on an alt, I'll buy marked items rather than spend a lot of time going to the distant vendor who sells them.
Supply and demand...

Sometimes, it's worth the convenience to not have to travel somewhere, especially if you don't have an alt to fund you or to pick it up for you. Especially for Horde having to go to the Eastern continent and vice versa. It's just the question of how much you're going to pay for the convenience...just like real life...
