New cooking recipes in 2.4
In the current state of the Cooking profession, it is necessary to take up Fishing in order to progress one's skill to the maximum level. For some unknown reason, Cooking recipes between 275 and 285 skill have been changed in the recent patches. As community MVP Highlander points out, all but one of the recipes that grant skill-ups in this range require materials that can only be gained through fishing (which, I suppose, can also be purchased off of the auction house). The only recipe that doesn't require fishing is only attained through running Dire Maul, which seems to be an unrealistic requirement. While not offering any explanation as to why these recipes were ever changed in the first place, Blizzard poster Salthem gives hope of a solution. New recipes are set to be added in patch 2.4 which should hopefully fix this problem. While not providing a lot of details, he does mention that the recipes will definitely bridge this gap.
Only time will tell exactly what recipes are being added, but perhaps they'll add a few more reliable ways to acquire skill points between 350 and 375 as well. What type of cooking recipes would you like to see in the patch?

That Runn Tum Tuber Surprise was incredibly easy for a 70 rogue.
Also the quest reward in Silithus, Smoked Desert Dumplings, can get you through it.

Some sort of sugar rich Haste food

I raised my skill to 374 using non-fishing recipes. But, its not like you *need* 375 cooking. There are no 375 recipies out there. I've enjoyed the daily cooking quest and like the recipes I got from them. But, I'd like to see some 375 cooking recipes. Maybe some food that increases haste or armor penetration or ranged crit. Maybe some food that procs an increase in attack power for a short period of time. Maybe some more "silly" foods that change your form. Murloc anyone?

r.a.-c.r beat me to it. I got my druid to 300 in cooking by going to Silithus. This was after my main sent him a bunch of wolf meat to cook but the recipe turned grey. I was not a happy camper.

What about fishing? that seriously needs some love IMO
As it stands there isnt really any reason or incentive to level it all the way to 375, sure there are hard to catch fish and the elusive Mr Pinchy (and his drop rate is dire at best), but other than that there isnt much else.

And while we are it.....
I'd like to see some sort of new secondary skill for making drinks. Right now, only Mages can conjure drinks. Everyone else has to buy/loot them. So why not make another seconday skill called 'Brewing' or something where people can make their own drinks. Have special holiday recipies and the like (Brewfest anyone?). I think it would be fun. And people would stop pestering my Mage.

Hey,I agree with you in prinicple. But, this game is rated for Teens. Many parental watch dog groups would FROWN on a profession that would seem to glorify alcohol.
[and before you flame --- Yes there is noggin fogger, rum, etc, but they are not a PROFESSION, if you get my point.]
I think that alchy's should be able to brew mana juice of some kind, IMO.

In case it wasn't clear, if your highest level character is 60 or so, and doesn't have a high fishing level, and has a 275 cooking level, you're out of luck. The Hellfire Peninsula quest reward for Buzzard Bites sits in your bag mocking you as you try in vain to find some squid or lobster or mightfish or anything in the AH to level up that cooking skill.
Before the patch you could level to 300 without any fish by making Tender Wolf Meat (and probably other things).

There is PLENTY of reason to level fishing to 375. The value of the highest end fish is very good. And, as stated, it is good for cooks. All my toons cook, so my fisherfolk are kept busy. I wish they would add some value for Alchemist's at the highest levels again.

This is excellent. I'm a big fan of the cooking in WoW, though cooking in LotRO has it beat.
I would love to see some cooking/alchemy/herbalism crossover. For instance, pluck something like Firebloom, mixing it into something like an Azerothian tabasco, and then being able to add that to certain foods and/or drinks to boost their effects.
Candina@WH Dec 7th 2007 5:41PM
firebloom + tabasco to 'boost' potion effects.
Only if it gives a STA debuff shortly there after ;-) [insert Mezzo-american kings revenge here.... ]

Reading this makes me even more glad I powerleveled my cooking before 2.3 came out as I have not found fishing to be an enjoyable profession. As far as getting it up to 375 I don't really see any big need for it as none of the current recipes require more than 350 cooking. Though for current players trying to get up to do the cooking daily this has definitely got to be a drag for them since I'm sure some didn't realize they needed the fishing until they got to that level of cooking.

The only food I made on a regular basis in the old game was the nightfin soup.
I'd love to see a new receipe that gives a screamin amount of MP5, say about 15-20 or so (the sporefish doesn't cut it).
Or at maybe junk the +spirit on some of the foods and replace it with another stat, (why do almost all the +stat foods above 300 have spirit?.

Actually there are two recipies you can acquire to max cooking w/o fishing: Mok'Nathal Shortribs and Crunchy Serpent. From what I have read the Alliance can buy them from Toshley's Station. However, I do know the Horde have to do the quest Mok'Nathal Treats to get the recipies. Now if they want to change something, change fishing! I have tried, honestly! However, I can't sit down and spend the time needed to max out fishing. :(

Opps I just read the posting on the EU forum. That sux!!! Good thing I got cooking up to 300 before the 2.3 patch. ;)

Getting cooking to 300 was easy, I just made the stuff I got in sillithus, and sold the extra on the ah. Sadly, cooking is my and always has been my highest skill (365!), but all my recipes are grey now except ones which require fish, fishing is so boring, I've only got 175 level in it, the thought of the many hour long grind to even 300 in fishing totally turns me off, so I'd like some recipes to skill up on without the need for fish. I'd also like some buff food specifically for locks, +20-30 stamina and +some amount of spell damage (I don't need spirit, thanx), that would be perfect! Oh and while I'm wishing, more food to buff my pets would be good too.
I can be quite content to farm meat for hours and hours (to provide myself with buff food for a couple weeks), but can't stand to fish for more than 10 minutes, so if blizz could make fishing as much "fun" as farming meat, I'd be down, I don't know how they could do that, maybe spear fishing, or net fishing (swim by a school with a net and scoop em up perhaps?)

My cooking is 375, but my fishing is like 200.... I don't think the two are related.

Why the hate for Fishing?
I maxed out my fishing long before learning to cook. From level 40 to 60 is was my main source of income. Follow along with me:
1) Run up and down the East coast of Tanaris, fishing all the Firefin, Blackmouth, and Stoneskin Eel pools you can find.
2) Pay special attention to Floating Wreckage. This is the real prize you're after. You'll get some Stranglekelp for the AH, Rumsey Rum for your friends to enjoy, and....
3) The Mithril Bound Trunk! Contains Silver, Greens, Leather, and Bolts of Mageweave. If you're not a Tailor, send everything to AH. Otherwise...
4) Turn the Mageweave into White Bandit Masks (which take 1 Bolt to make) If you're not an enchanter, sell the masks at AH. Otherwise....
5) Disenchant the Masks into Vision Dust. Send to AH.
I made hundreds of gold (and got many, many skillups)
Now I just use my Fishing to pull Furious Crawdads, Icefin Bluefish (cooked into Poached Bluefish), and Motes of Water from the lakes in Nagrand and Terrokar.
That clinking sound you hear is Gold pouring into my bags.

You won't need fishing to get up to 300 - did 300+ cooking on all of my toons without using one fish...
