Phat Loot Phriday: Precisely Calibrated Boomstick

Name: Precisely Calibrated Boomstick
Type: Epic Gun
Damage/Speed: 48-56 / 1.50 (34.7 DPS)
Abilities:
- +14 Agility
- Ok you primitive screwheads, listen up! As far as I can tell (and it seems like whenever I make a blanket statement like this, our commenters always prove me wrong), this is the fastest non-magical projectile (not thrown) ranged weapon in the game.
- There's good news and bad news on that one. The good news is that for hunters, firing this fast will mean that any abilities that proc (Improved Aspect of the Hawk, Go for the Throat) will do it more often. You'll also get more crits, which is always nice, and some twink PvP hunters say this can actually keep casters from casting-- it hits so fast that their casting bar slows way down.
- But unfortunately, speed isn't everything-- as fast as this gun is, lots of hunters would rather have a slower gun that does more damage per hit. Not to mention that all this firing spends your ammo like it's going out of style-- more bangs means more money for new ammo. For BM hunters who autoshot a lot, this gun is nice at the level, but for most other hunters, it's probably not worth the time unless it falls into your lap.
- Rogues could also use it-- the agility in the ranged weapon slot is nice for the level. But anyone who takes it around 45 or so will probably be passing it up for something better within a few levels anyway. But that's how it is with lowbie weapons-- first you want to kiss them, then you want to kill them. Blow.
Getting Rid of It: If you had it drop and don't need it, sell that sucker on the AH! Otherwise, a vendor will give you 2g 45s 40c for it, or it'll DE into a Large Radiant Shard. Hail to the king, baby. Gimme some sugar.

Hate to be that guy, but the Xavian Stiletto throwing weapon off Illhoof is 1.40 speed....
James Dec 7th 2007 8:19PM
Yes but thrown weapons have a global cooldown so they are at best 1.5
Mike Schramm Dec 7th 2007 8:26PM
Ah, and I didn't mean to include throwing weapons in the list-- I meant projectile ranged weapon. Fixed the post.

Ahh the good ol' days, this was actually my first ever Epic item loot I ever got. I remember doing the gathering quests in the blasted lands collecting various animal parts, and bam, this puppy drops! I'm a priest, and the other person in the group was a warlock so we let the rolls go! BOOM! rolled a 98!! I think I sold this sucker for around 650-800gold when that much is about the same as 5000 is now. Anyway, enough rambling, this was my first ever epic, and it holds a special place in my heart. /kiss.

But you sold it! You traded away your first love! Fie, fie on you!

I actually have this on my rogue from way back before TBC. And even more amazing, I got it because I was playing my rogue when it dropped in the Hinterlands, I won the loot roll, and I equipped it on the spot. So no, I didn't buy it from the Auction House.

Psst... you should really use the new item linking on the Item Name.

You beat me to exactly what I was going to say.

I had this gun on my hunter and LOVED it. I was a BM hunter and had haste enchant, so at times I could be firing almost .6 secs. This gun is great and even though it doesn't hit harder, it is firing faster, so technically you can do more damage, hitter smaller but faster. I totally recomend this, lasted forever...and I got it myself for around 60g ^_^

I'm pretty sure for a hunter a speed of 1.5 is actually detramental to DPS as apposed to beneficial, since steady shot is a 1.5 sec cast, you'd miss out on an autoshot.
I believe 1.6 speed is the optimal speed for maximum dps, especially for BM hunter who do nothing but spam steady shot.
Hybrys Dec 7th 2007 9:42PM
This is true, but, before steady shot *level 62* the golden time is about 0.55 *disregarding latency*, since Multishot has a hidden 0.5 sec. cast time.
Nyx Dec 8th 2007 9:26AM
Who on god's green earth uses this gun past level 50, let alone to level 62? What an inane thing to say.
Galon Dec 7th 2007 9:29PM
Lem, im pretty sure anyone using this gun (epic but still only level 43) and steady shot (a level 62 move) would fail at life anyway....

I love listening to the POP POP POP POP of my Boomstick. Definitely worth the 120g I paid for it, especially if you're BM and planning to PVP in the 40-49 bracket.

Best part about the gun is the Evil Dead and Bruce Campbell references. I've been tempted to get it just for that alone. (hey, if I can sell "The One Ring" for 100g I can buy this gun for a movie reference can't I?)
hpavc Dec 8th 2007 3:38AM
Great weapon if you can get it ahead of time for that level. No doubt, but the cost of it is often just silly. Though it just might be worth the 750 or whatever people charge if it cuts down a few hours of play time overall.
Hansbo Dec 8th 2007 5:41AM
Love the Army of Darkness reference.
Lem Dec 8th 2007 8:48AM
rofl, I didnt even notice it was a low level gun.
Why didnt you use your new link thing to link the item, wowinsider?
Thats like having an 18 year old perfectly formed girlfriend, but watching porn instead.

"(hey, if I can sell "The One Ring" for 100g I can buy this gun for a movie reference can't I?)"
If I'm selling at an inflated price to take advantage of your being a goofball, go for it!

I bought this baby for 6g Hehe :)
