World events and how to run them
There's a discussion going down on the forums about what many consider to be the most exciting part of MMO games, including World of Warcraft-- world events. As many drawbacks as there were to the AQ events, no one can argue that they didn't affect everyone in the World-- everyone was able to step up and help the war effort, and even though everyone didn't fit in Silithus, everyone came across some of the invaders that spread across the world. While the Naxx event was that way as well, we haven't really seen anything else on that scale even in this, the largest MMO ever. And let's not forget that since Burning Crusade was released, we're dealing with a lot more people-- there are huge amounts of the population who have never seen a world event yet.Which makes it all the more likely that we will see a big one for Wrath of the Lich King. Bornakk says that while Blizzard realizes that a lot needs to go into creating a big world event, they've also learned a lot from Brewfest and the Hallow's End events about how to both tune the scale and get players involved. But Blizzard still wants to do a big one, and from what we heard at BlizzCon, they're going to come up with a reason for Alliance and Horde to head up to Northrend after Arthas.
My guess? Arthas is going to become a threat again-- he'll invade Undercity, or bomb Darnassus, or somehow attack our world. And for the first time that I can think of since the game has started, we're going to actually lose something-- an NPC, a city (at the very least, Dalaran) or something else. For all of the fighting going on in the world of Warcraft, it hasn't yet changed that much. And I think that with the next expansion, Blizzard is looking to have Arthas shake things up a bit.

I'd be fine with Arthas taking out Darnassus. Really. Please?
Xeren Dec 10th 2007 6:29PM
ooooooh, i like that. they need to destroy either the exodar or darnassus, as they are already out of the way as it is, and on top of that, they're fighting for the share of the few people in that area.

... You're playing on the Horde side, right?

I like world events, I wish there were more. I miss:
- Onyxia and UBRS completion buffs
- AQ40 event (epic!)
- Naxx event (was less epic, but it was fun to see undead run around Undercity killing people)
I wish winning and losing battlegrounds meant more. Like the wins/loses are summed up every week and actually mean something. I'm sure lots of good ideas could be borrowed from other games.

Next year for April Fool's day have Ragnaros, Onyxia and Nefarian attack Shattarath becuase no one wants to fight them anymore! It would be hilarious.

The world events need to be more often and more epic in WoW. The holidays don't really cut it and neither do the elemental invasions and such.
There needs to be more scourge attacks on major cities that happen at random times and vary in size from small to huge. There is all kinds of things they could do to help liven things up in the game so its not all pvp/raid.

This is one of the things I really miss from CoHs. Every time a new issue came out and their different holidays all had World events tied in with them. And they were(presumably still are) awesome. Their was something for players of every level and they really felt like EPIC events. Although, I will never miss Taskforces. I will gladly never do one of those again.

I would love to see more world events. Being relatively new to the game (only been playing about 18 months) i have only seen gruul kicking around and a few holidays. Seeing all those skeletons laying outside of stormwind was great! However i really wish i had of seen something more epic like the AQ opening etc etc. Can we get Arthas to smash through darnassus and "duke it out" with some ancient defenders? How is Dalaran going to be detached from its current "bubble"? Is arthas going to come along and basically kick the crapola out of everyone including the T6 geared people that want a shot at him? Are all the lowbie nubs going to get in the way and interfere and make it harder for the geared people (like i did with Gruul)?
Something "epic" would be awesome and exactly what i think the game needs to remind people it is more then Kara and S1 gear grinding!
my $0.02

I'm a huge fan of world type events, however these focused ( happening on a single day for instance ) generally end up being huge lag and crash fests. Lag and server crashes make Heleth cry.

Anyone rememeber a few months back a dense mob of lvl 15 undead suddenly turned up at the grave yard by Jasperlode Mine and Moonbrooke? The next day they were gone.
I was wondering if that was a test, maybe the dead will rise.

What's all this talk about Gruul outside of Orgrimmar?
Going into tbc there was loose talk on the forums about the Gnomes reclaiming Gnomeregan as their capital city (thus further changing the population density in/around Ironforge). There was even wishful thinking that similar would happen with the troll/orc starting zones/capital cities. It sadly never happened. Blizz is hesitant to change old content in such drastic ways. Add new content as they did with The Exodar and Silvermoon? Sure, no problem.

actually those zombies are rare elites, they sometimes drop a cool green sword. they have been there since the beta of WoW =P
here here! for arthas raizing worthless darnasus!
Clem Dec 10th 2007 10:39PM
For a PVP grinder, Darn is the best city. The BG officers, the mail box, the auction house, the bank, and the repair NPC are all clustered closer together than any other city.

Very good point! No point having these awesome well drawn and thought out world events if it is filled with lag frustration and hate filled QQing

I was thinking that arthas would capture thrall, or some other big named npc(s) to draw the ally and horde to northrend to eliminate us all.
Tyy Dec 10th 2007 9:48PM
nothing better than those world events, I felt the community, when the AQ gates opened and alliance defended the gong. I enjoyed the Scourge Invasion and had tons of fun, when mobs were kited into big cities by players.
Even though I tend to get disconnected and experience lag, it was still fun. Please send the word to Blizzard that they have to do such things more often or at least increase the impact and duration of the elemental invasion.

But why go after the worthless cities? "Oh wow, Thunderbluff and Darnassus are filled with undead minions of the Lich King... LFM Daily Heroics, pst"
Invade Orgrimmar. Invade Ironforge or Stormwind. Retake the Undercity so that there's a siege right outside.
If you ask me, Stormwind is asking for it. Would be a great time to bring back the king... where is he now again? Not the toddler.
Can you imagine Arthas returning to Silvermoon?
These grand events are what MMOs were made for really. Massively shared experiences.
Frak it. Invade all the cities.
