World events and how to run them
There's a discussion going down on the forums about what many consider to be the most exciting part of MMO games, including World of Warcraft-- world events. As many drawbacks as there were to the AQ events, no one can argue that they didn't affect everyone in the World-- everyone was able to step up and help the war effort, and even though everyone didn't fit in Silithus, everyone came across some of the invaders that spread across the world. While the Naxx event was that way as well, we haven't really seen anything else on that scale even in this, the largest MMO ever. And let's not forget that since Burning Crusade was released, we're dealing with a lot more people-- there are huge amounts of the population who have never seen a world event yet.Which makes it all the more likely that we will see a big one for Wrath of the Lich King. Bornakk says that while Blizzard realizes that a lot needs to go into creating a big world event, they've also learned a lot from Brewfest and the Hallow's End events about how to both tune the scale and get players involved. But Blizzard still wants to do a big one, and from what we heard at BlizzCon, they're going to come up with a reason for Alliance and Horde to head up to Northrend after Arthas.
My guess? Arthas is going to become a threat again-- he'll invade Undercity, or bomb Darnassus, or somehow attack our world. And for the first time that I can think of since the game has started, we're going to actually lose something-- an NPC, a city (at the very least, Dalaran) or something else. For all of the fighting going on in the world of Warcraft, it hasn't yet changed that much. And I think that with the next expansion, Blizzard is looking to have Arthas shake things up a bit.

Well kidnapping Thrall doesn't make much sense from Arthas' standpoint... now, Sylvannas on the other hand.....
Which Alliance leader does Arthas probably have the biggest beef with?

I would think Tyrande, considering she aided Kael'Thas and Kael'Thas still hates Arthas even though Kael'Thas is now 'evil'. The rest don't really have much of a tie to him.. though Stormwind's true king DID know Arthas as a child so maybe?

The bigger and more spectacular the better; trash the capitols, get the boat routes randomly invaded by lost pirate ships, an army of undead elite swarming Stormwind and Undercity, get the anarchy flowing :D
I used to be on a different MMO a while ago; Sony's Planetside. They had a major world event where the entire planet was smashed into a universe of different planets. The buildup consisted of random earthquakes and meterogical occurances becoming more and more frequent until everything went nuts. Twas a real good thing to witness; go on the Blizzard, do us proud.

Why wait until Wrath?
2.4, with the Sunwell Plateau, seems like a good time to pull one. I can see the eyes of the Sha'tar descending on that area, and realizing what the Blood Elves have stashed away in Silvermoon. Perhaps Ad'al shows up outside Ironforge one day, calling for all able-bodied souls to join him in a righteous crusade. Imagine the swarm of people on mounts, riding up with him. When they arrive at Silvermoon, the gates swing shut, but he blows them off the hinges, and he/she/it proceeds to tear through the city towards the Paladin trainer. Perhaps that naaru will end up as a sort of Field Commander for the Plateau, since Ad'al will have to return to Shattrath.

My guess on what happens to kick off WoTLK.
Arthas calmly walks into Shattrath and kills Griftah.
Suddenly every engineer and person wanting to do ZA is pissed.
A'del calls him out and Arthas bitch slaps G'eras like A'del slaps around Fel Reavers. Now EVERYBODY is mad cause their heroic badge vendor is dead.
Arthas then starts yelling in Shat about "You are all a bunch of pansies unworthy to lick my boots. You were prepared for that Emo Punk, but even when I was half dead I could slap him around and make him call me mommy. Heck at least he put up some resistance compared to his brother. Bronzebeard's brother made squeaky noises when I gutted him, Jaina's a tease, Thrall's couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag without having Grom backing him up, Kael'Theas was a child molester, and the true king of Stormwind is sitting in an icy cell behind my throne. Oh, one more thing, tell Sylvannus her sister likes it when I am rough."
That should get the entire thing going.

Absolutely Brilliant. Honestly I hadn't even registered the fact that he's not emo-child anymore (or at least its an option)

I think something bad is going to happen to the left side of azeroth since they are concentrating on putting all this new content on the right side.
I personally cannot wait to see what happenes whatever it is..
I started after Nax opened and right before BC hit.. so I haven't seen any world events really.
And I am on Exodar and missed those AQ gates opening because some dumb alliance transfered on to our server a few weeks ago and opened the AQ gates only giving one days notice on the forums that it was happening.
So safe to say most of the server missed it.
Maybe they should release a plague that kills and deletes all teh gnomes.. that sure would be nice :)

"And let's not forget that since Burning Crusade was released, we're dealing with a lot more people"
Maybe in total subscribers, but there's still not much difference in our gameplay, which still has more of a small town feel than that of a massive world. Last I checked, my server has 30k subscribers or so. I live in NYC, that's about the number of people in my neighborhood.
Maybe a little OT, but I keep hearing the 9 million number being thrown around, which really doesn't make any difference at the server level.
Oh yeah, and bring back Kazzak..
