GM saves player from accidental Season 3 purchase
Once upon a time, November 13th to be exact, someone very close to me traveled to the Arena vendor in Area 52 to buy his first Season 3 gear. He had been saving up his Arena points and was excited about getting gauntlets for his resto speced Shammy. Now, he didn't have to go to Area 52. There are new Arena vendors in Blade's Edge, Nagrand and Gadgetzan, but he traveled to Area 52 to be AoE'd with everyone else. (Also, he's got one of those nifty pirate hats, so he's KOS in Gadgetzan.)
After being feared a couple times, he bought his new gauntlets, only to find out that instead of being the coveted resto gloves, he had accidentally purchased enhancement ones.
You know that awful sinking feeling of having made an irrevocable mistake? It's like when you load an old-school game instead of saving and lose a few hours of work. Or when you hit "Reply All" on an email, sending a completely inappropriate comment to the known universe. Well, maybe that last one is worse... Regardless, he was devastated.
Now some of you are probably reading the title of this post and frowning. You may think he should just consider his purchase a stupid tax and move on with his life. I think that if it had happened to someone else, he might be right there with you. But he had to try asking a GM for help, just in case they would. And they did.
The GM (I erased the name from the screenshot to protect the helpful) arranged for the offending gauntlets to be removed on his next zone and the Arena points to be reinstated upon next login. It worked and he got his new gauntlets.
As you can see from the screenshot, the GM also gave Zul'Aman advice:
Don't die... Kill, kill, kill
Sage advice indeed.
Do you think the GM should have fixed this mistake? Or do you think my close friend should have had to live with his error?

Pretty cool.
They really need to give PvP gear more descriptive names. For example, arena gear should have the Season number in it ("Gladiator's Spaulders - Season 1").
They should also rename them based on the spec they're for. It doesn't have to be as lame as "Healer's Belt", but something more descriptive than "Vindicator's Chain Cinch" or whatever. How about Restorer, Brawler, and Elementalist?

That would be awesome. It takes me 5 minutes to buy an item because I check over and over again to make sure I'm not getting the wrong thing.
LostOne Dec 13th 2007 3:00PM
@14
Agreed. A simple S1 at the beginning or end of an item name could clear a lot of things up.
Or saperate vendors for each season. Season 1, 2 and 3 vendors in a building. Only keep the three most current vendors out, so when season 4 hits there'd be 2, 3, 4 out, season 2 for honor/tokens.

@14, Yeah i agree i don't know how many times i have almost bought the wrong item and loose my hard earned honor points.

GMs will do this, however usually mention that it is an item restore and you only get a secret number of them.
However, I think GMs get ragged on far to much as the bad guy who does nothing. Instead of all those times when they are extremely helpful, get the job done, and inject a little humor into your life. Don't die... Kill, kill, kill

Actually I'm kinda bumbed out reading this. I've accidentally sent mail to someone I thought was my bank character and misspelled the name. The GM response was I had to wait 30 days to see if they would "loot it" and there was nothing they could do and apologized for the inconvenience. I've also accidentally purchased a different colored mount than I meant too and got the same kind of GM response.
OK, both were errors on my part - not the game's. Both of my tickets were filed IMMEDIATELY AFTER the mistakes happened and they could have verified that and fixed the situation. They chose not to.
Sorry, but I'm going to complain here and say that the guy should have been stuck with the enhancement gloves because GMs should be consistent. In a way I'm happy for him, in a way I feel cheated.

I agree with Ted. A little consistency would be nice. Sometimes they’re all, “No problem, here you go…” and the next time they’re like “Nope, sorry. We don’t do that…””But, you did it last week for a friend of mine…” “Sorry, it’s against our policy, we don’t do that.”
WTB a little consistency!!!

Has anyone had experience with getting more than one restore from the GM's?
When I looted the verdant sphere by accident, a GM informed me it would use my ONLY restore to give the item back to who should have looted it originally.
I guess I'm thankful Rogue's only get one set of gear. I'm pretty sure if we had different sets like shamans and priests, I'd have misclicked something by now. Probably more than once.

so many times things were master looted to the wrong person. Sometimes gms help sometimes they dont. its 50/50.
Out of being desperate, if you lie and blame the game for the mistake (ie a disconnect and u logged in/ game froze and it happened) you will get helped. They really should make a policy on what they can and cant do.

3 wishes pretty much covers it. The more you ask them to do this for you, the less likely they are to say yes the next time.
I used one of my wishes when I purchased the S3 throwing axe instead of the hunter axe on S3 day

Is this the crap that passes for articles on this site now??
PLAYER MAKES MISTAKE; GM FIXES. DISCUSS.
seriously wtf
Daryl Dec 15th 2007 2:46AM
I understand that Blizz allow one restore including a deleted character per account. Maybe another one if it a year or two later. They have said they won't help career victims
Possibly if the guy in the news item did it again next week, they'd just say "too bad"
Rydo.

That reminds me of the advice that the hunter leader gave me, when I was freshly signed up with my old raiding guild. I asked him for some words of wisdom regarding the upcoming raid, and he replied, "Kill shit. Don't die."
I have ever since taken that as my motto for World of Warcraft play [and, more metaphorically, for life itself].
Squishy Dec 14th 2007 8:26AM
*sigh* so unfair. When I accidentally chose the caster ring instead of the healer ring from Kara, GMs told me "tough luck". Yet here they are refunding an item for another that can be BOUGHT BY EARNING MORE POINTS.
Blizzard's GM responses are so terribly inconsistent.
Kaibedz Feb 8th 2008 12:33PM
I also chose the wrong Kara ring. I've heard once exhalted you can pay to have the ring changed. Can anyone confirm this?
Squishy Dec 14th 2007 10:51AM
Yes. Upon reaching exalted. Since I'm a scrub/casual, that'll be some time next year. When it won't matter because we'll have WOTLK drops.
seedorf Dec 14th 2007 12:53PM
Just wish GMs on my Server were this nice.
