Violet Eye ring exchanges at exalted only

I have good news and bad news, good readers. The good news is that if you are at exalted level with the Violet Eye, you can, in fact, exchange your reputation reward ring from Karazhan for a ring of a different type (if you are DPS, you can get a healing ring, and vice versa)-- all you have to do is destroy your ring, and then you'll be able to redo the quest to get a different ring, according to Hortus on the forums.
However, I thought that the other question in the thread, the one about whether it works for people who are not exalted, was an excellent one. And since my Shaman is not actually exalted yet, I figured I'd get some hands-on experience and find out for you, dear readers, whether the Violet Eye would exchange your ring at a level below exalted. So, as you can see in the shot above, I destroyed my revered ring (I am not kidding-- I really did), and asked the quest giver for another one.
Unfortunately, the bad news is that it does not work. I didn't actually get another ring. And apparently I'll have to work up to exalted to get my ring back. The things I do for you, my readers. The things I do.

From patch notes 2.1.0
"An option is available at Exalted with the Violet Eye to turn in faction ring along with gold for a different exalted-level faction ring."
Zumwalah Dec 14th 2007 3:09PM
i think you mis understood the point of the change.. you could always exchange your ring.. it costs 75g.. and has always been a option.. what was changed is that is you have deleted your ring, you can now get it back..
Zumwalah Dec 14th 2007 3:12PM
And exalted has always been necessary to exchange your ring

I knew that it worked at Exalted, and I thought it would be good to just remind people of that. But the question I wanted to answer is whether or not it worked before Exalted, and clearly it didn't. The good news is that I have another healing ring, and I'm almost there. I'll bounce back.
But yes, this was a sacrifice in the name of journalism. :)

I love you Mike Schramm!

Here's hoping you can convince a GM to restore it for your brave act of journalism!

This is why it helps to pay attention to your "How to fix things in WoW" book.
You get your ring how? By doing a quest. If you destroy your ring before exalted, just abandon the quest, and the questgiver should give you the revered (or honored, or friendly) ring back.

I by mistake selected the quest line for the spell DPS right for my feral druid. I had to wait till exalted to get the correct ring. It doesn't really take much time to reach exalted so it's no big deal!

Small question... so if i destroy my ring, i don't have to pay to get another classes ring? I know when you normally talk to the NPC they want 75 gold to do an exchange and take your old ring away.
Slaign Dec 14th 2007 4:13PM
Heh "Sacrifice in the name of journalism"? Riiiight. Try sacrifice in the name of learning not to be foolish. Not only could you have done this on the test realm (if you DID then stop calling it a sacrifice), but it has been known for months now that exalted is required for an exchange.

Did you Abandon the quest? I know I destroyed my Honored ring and abandoned the quest and got my revered ring.

Ok, so here’s my experience with it.
With my tank, I roll up to the person and open up and she gives me 3 yellow !’s.
So naturally I’m thinking these are 3 different quest to pick up for kara.
And you know what happens from there. I got myself a nice little caster ring.
So I started asking in guild about it (at this point I see she isn’t offereing the other two quest). And they told me of my mistake.
Then a guy tells me to contact a GM about it, because he knows of 2 other people that did the same thing, and the GM reversed it to where they could get the tank ring etc etc..
So after contacting the GM, he tells me that there is nothing he can do about it, good luck.. blah blah blah.
I don’t really know how to feel about what happened. Sure I should have read the quest, but when you have grinded through 100’s of quest and you NEVER have to “choose the right quest” why would I all of the sudden start reading quest for this ONE just to get the right ring that in the end can not be exchanged until you hit exalted AND you have to pay gold?
But it looks like I’m not the only person doing it, so I don’t feel all that noobish.
I just think it is a really poorly designed set up for a quest. If there was certain warnings (like for other things in the game like deleting pvp items) for quest like these, maybe this wouldn’t be happening to people. But some of us have to learn the hard way.

The funny thing is... I did the exact same thing a loooooong time ago with the Brood rings from AQ40. I had at the time level 2 characters to 60 and never once experienced a quest like that... Normally I'd do just the same thing... Grab all the quests and read them as I go... Oops can't replace the ring till exalted. Too bad.
Sadly blizzard made the same mistake and did this again with the violet eye rings.

Uh... if you destroy the ring for whatever reason you can always get it back until you reach exalted.
The reason being the ring is still needed for the next stage of the quest chain involving you rising in ranks with the violet eye. So for example:
You start with the quest "Path of the Violet Protector" you get a signet ring when you complete it.
Next quest on the chain is "Down the Violet Path" where you receive a ring upon accepting the quest. At any point you can simply destroy your ring and abandon/reaccept the quest. Every time you reaccept it you receive a new ring. The same one for your current rep mind you, but a new ring.
Its a built in safeguard so you can complete the quest chain despite any screwups that may occur.
