Breakfast Topic: Where's WoW?
MMO sites across the 'net have recently been abuzz with the question of what everyone's top ten MMOs are, inspired by a forum thread on f13.net. As of this morning, f13 has compiled the following rankings:
814 pts. - World of Warcraft
514 pts. - City of Heroes/Villains
471 pts. - Dark Age of Camelot
459 pts. - Ultima Online
450 pts. - EverQuest
435 pts. - Eve Online
349 pts. - EverQuest 2
348 pts. - Star Wars Galaxies
308 pts. - Lord of the Rings Online
219 pts. - Planetside
Though our game of choice, World of Warcraft, is ahead of the competition, this morning I'd like to ask you where WoW would rank in your own top ten list. Is it number one, matching f13's list, or not?

Of course WoW is #1 on my list. But, I'd like to comment on the longevity that EQ and Ultima Online have. Gratz to those game. I hope WoW has the legs those two games have had (and I think it will).

World of Warcraft took my MMO-virginity. It's been my first and only, so naturally it's #1. :)

Ultima Online, forever and ever and ever. That is, Ultima Online before the split the world into Carebear vs. PvP.
No other game in the history of games could grab me and keep me like that one did...There was no point to anything, but you did it anyways. PvP was as balanced as it got since hardly anyone use 'magic' weapons because they were so valuable

I've been impressed by UO's and EQ's staying power, so props to those games. My own personal list would be something like...
1. WoW
2. EQ
3. SWG (back in the day)
4. Asheron's Call
5. LotRO

The only thing that surprises me on that list is Star Wars Galaxies. I can't believe enough people still play it to put it on that list. SOE - the only company in history to stomp on their existing customer base in the pursuit of a mythical audience who never showed up.
As for WoW, looking at the longevity of UO and EQ, we will have this game for many years to come. Honestly, at this point, I think the only company that will ever replace WoW is Blizzzard. Folks keep talking about WAR, I for one am not leaving Warcraft to play a newly released warcraft. If Blizz can give us some nice non-instanced PvP innovations (like the planned seige warfare) with WotLK, then that will put my reasons for leaving the game for WAR to zero.

Well, WoW is top dog on my list but only because WAR isn't out ;) Concidering DAoC is the 3rd best game and one of the earlier ones I can't wait to see what that team can do with a real IP and lots and lots of EA money!

The only game I surprised that ISN'T on the list is Final Fantasy Online. It isn't nearly as popular as it used to be, but all things considered it was a gamble by Square that payed off pretty well. It still has a core player base that swears by it. They probably swear by it because playing anything else feels like an MMO light. Seriously, I played that game off and on for about 3 years and you had to be really serious to get anywhere in it. It was that aspect that finally turned my away from it and I picked up WoW more as the years went by.

WoW is the only MMO I play (mainly into console gaming) so it's the top of my list. Might look at other games if my friends decide to change to something else, but I don't really look forward to ~$30 a month or whatever the cost would be to maintain two games at once.

Uhm.. wheres Eve-online?? Or is this a kids-favorite list? :p
Merri Dec 23rd 2007 1:40PM
*raises her hand* EVE is on my list!
Bleri Dec 21st 2007 8:54AM
Currently only subbed to WoW but it doesnt mean its my favourite. It just means its easy to pick up and put down.
DAoC was and always will be #1 for me. Followed by WoW and then EVE.
LostOne Dec 21st 2007 8:55AM
WoW is my first and so far only MMO. Before a friend made me try a trial on WoW I refused to play MMOs. My reasoning? "Why should I have to pay a subscription fee to play a game I already own after I buy the software at the store? Why can't they follow the Diablo 2 model and just expand Battlenet?" Naive words, I know now.
WoW is still increasing in the number of subscribers, so I think it'll be quite a while before there is a decline. Sure when new highly anticipated MMOs come out (Warhammer Online for example) I think we'll temporarily lose players to that, but after a while they'll come back.

For me:
1) Lineage 1: My first MMORPG and will always be my favorite
2) SWG: Pre-NGE, it had so much scope so much great going for it, if only...
3) WoW: Just an overall wonderful game
4) Lineage 2: Mostly because I had so much fun with the PvP and found a great group of people to play with.
5) EQ2: Not as good as it could have been but still a solid MMORPG
6) Saga of Ryzom: Probably could have been one of the best MMO's ever had it beens supported and advanced properly but still very innovative
7) Dark Ages of Camelot: Great RvR pvp, so much classes and races and tons of content, what's not to love really. Oh right... the mechanics; ick!
8) City of Heroes/Villains: Get's long in the tooth after playing for more than a few months but just silly fun anyways. Deserves to be invested in some more for sure.
9) Horizons: Plauged with issue after issue, poor graphics, terrible lag and on and on but I'll be damned if playing a Dragon wasn't immense fun and by far the best crafting of almost any MMO only being matched by the crafting in the original iteration of SWG IMHO.
10) Everquest: I was playing more of Lineage when Everquest was in it's hayday but I had funt he times I did play; probably the best druid class of any MMO I've ever played.

#1 - SWG (pre the-most-spectacular-destruction-of-a-game-ever let's-send-all-our-players-to-warcraft fiasco)
#2 - WoW
Badger Dec 21st 2007 9:24AM
With nine million people playing, I'm hardly surprised WoW is at the #1 spot.
With more than four million people playing "Guild Wars," however, I'm utterly bewildered as to why that particular title did not make the list.
Rocken Dec 21st 2007 9:28AM
/agree
If I wasn't playing WoW, it would be Eve or Guild Wars.
Lios Dec 21st 2007 9:39AM
Hey, where is the game that killed WoW.. Guildwars?
Badger Dec 21st 2007 9:54AM
Haha! Lios, "Guild Wars" is a hell of a lot of fun, but I seriously doubt it will be "killing World of Warcraft" any time soon! I mean, look at those numbers ... I like the game as much as you do, but there are more than five million people who would disagree with us.
Theadrick Dec 21st 2007 9:42AM
Here's my list:
1. WoW
2. LoTR Online (if I didn't have a WoW sub, I would be playing this excellent MMO)
3. DAoC
4. EQ Pre-Luclin
5. The rest...
Naix Dec 21st 2007 9:57AM
My List
1. Wow
2. Guild Wars
3. EQ
4. Diablo 2 (hardcore mode)
